Book Description :

From the author of The Architecture of Happiness, a bold argument on how we can still benefit, without believing, from the wisdom, the beauty, and the consolatory power that religion has to offer. What if religions are neither all true nor all nonsense? The long-running and often boring debate between fundamentalist believers and non-believers is finally moved forward by Alain de Botton's inspiring new book, which boldly argues that the supernatural claims of religion are entirely false -- but that religion still has some very important things to teach the secular world.

Book Description :

Atheism is characterized by rejection or lack of belief in the existence of a Supreme Being, commonly referred to as God. The people who practice this belief are referred to as atheists. There is a distinction however, to this belief. One form of atheism is a simple case of skepticism. There is a disbelief that God really exists. Simply put, it is refusal or inability to accept the concept that God is alive today, and that there is a God, as most people believe to be true. This is categorized as “weak atheism”. On the contrary, “strong atheism” has a crystal clear belief that God does not really exist. Therefore, when a person proclaims to be an atheist, he or she could be a weak or strong atheist, depending on the degree or intensity of the belief in godlessness in his or her life. Book Description :

Discover .... Atheism is very easy to define: it is the belief that there is neither God nor the gods. From now we will just talk about belief in God, but the arguments in this book are equally applicable to the monotheistic and polytheistic religions. However, many think that atheists believe that there is no God, no morality; or that there is no God, nor the meaning of life; or again, neither God nor human goodness. As we shall see, there is nothing to stop the atheist believe in morality, the meaning of life or human goodness. Atheism is only the truly negative when it comes to believing in God. It is capable of positively look at other aspects of life as well as any other belief. However, there is a certain point where the negativism of atheistic beliefs extends beyond God's existence. Atheist rejection of faith in God is usually accompanied by a broader rejection of any supernatural or transcendent reality. An atheist, for instance, usually doesn't believe in the existence of the immortal soul, life after death, ghosts and supernatural forces. Although, strictly speaking, an atheist can believe in any of that, and yet remain an atheist, reasons which will become clearer later on, arguments and ideas that support atheism naturally tend to exclude beliefs in the supernatural and fantastic. Atheism is the view contrary not only to theism and other forms of belief in God but also to agnosticism - i.e. the exclusion of belief or disbelief in God. Agnostic argues that we cannot know whether God exists or does not exist, and is, therefore, the only reasonable solution to refrain from judgment. Both theists and atheists, according to agnostic beliefs, are exaggerating in claims that God exists / does not exist. We simply do not have enough arguments or evidence to justify any of these positions. The question whether people with no positive faith in God should be agnostics or atheists is really important, probably as much as the question whether to believe in God or not. Theism and Atheism in a Post Secular Age

Theism and Atheism in a Post Secular Age Book

Book Description :

This book examines the post-secular idea of ‘religion for non-believers’. The new form of unbelief which is dubbed as ‘tourist atheism’ is not based on absolute rejection of religion as a ‘dangerous illusion’ or ‘mere prejudice’. Tourist atheists instead consider religion as a cultural heritage and a way of seeking perfection. What are the origins of these new forms of atheism? What are the implications of the emergence of a type of atheism which is more open toward religious teachings, rituals, arts, and world views? Hashemi argues that public intellectuals must consider that it is a sign of a post-secular age in which believers and non-believers go beyond mere tolerance and engage in a creative process of co-practice and co-working.

Book Description :

Fighting God is a firebrand manifesto from one of the most recognizable faces of atheism. In his book, Silverman-a walking, talking atheist billboard known for his appearances on Fox News-discusses the effectiveness, ethics and impact of the in-your-face-atheist who refuses to be silent. Silverman argues that religion is more than just wrong: it is malevolent and does not deserve our respect. It is our duty to be outspoken and do what we can to bring religion down. Examining the mentality, methods and issues facing the firebrand atheist, Silverman presents an overwhelming argument for firebrand atheism and reveals: - All religion is cafeteria religion and almost all agnostics are atheists. - American society grants religion a privileged status, despite the intentions of the Founding Fathers. - Christian politicians have adversely (and un-Constitutionally) affected our society with regard to science, health, women's rights, and gay rights. - The notion of "atheist Jews" is a lie forced on us by religion. - It is not "Islamophobia" to observe dangerous teachings and disproportionate violence in Islam. - Atheists are slowly but surely winning the battle. Fighting God is a provocative, unapologetic book that takes religion to task and will give inspiration to non-believers and serve as the ultimate answer to apologists.

Book Description :

This is the partial translation of Edip Yuksel's Turkish book, Ateistlere 19 Soru (19 Questions for Atheists). The complete translation, God willing will be translated later. This book contains 10 philosophical arguments for God's existence and divine message by a rational monotheist. Some of the arguments are original. Classic arguments are also improved, articulated with interesting examples and presented in an easy to understand style. The arguments are proven to be powerful in face-to-face debates held on live TV programs or in conference rooms. Edip Yuksel has debated face-to-face with prominent atheists, scientists and religious scholars. Edip Yüksel has never lost an argument and is committed to never lose in the future, since he is a lover of wisdom, a seeker of truth. Whenever Edip learns his errors he does not hesitate to correct himself and thanks the opponent for helping him to correct his error. In fact, he gave up his carrier as the best-selling-author, his fame as the leader of millions of Islamists, political prospects, and risked everything including his life, after a series of debates with an Egyptian-American scientist, leading Edip correcting the biggest mistake of his life, adhering Sunni religion. Some of the debates end with dramatic intellectual knock-outs, such as escaping from the live TV program watched by millions (Dr Süleyman Ateş), asking the video debate not to be published after signing it to be published for a documentary (Dr Michael Shermer), forcefully grabbing the book from Edip's hand in a live TV program (Selahattin Yazici), escaping from his own mosque while having video-recorded discussion for a documentary (Imam Shamsi Ali), and the philosophy professor in Kazakhstan who escaped to another universe (Prof Beket Nurzhanov), etc. And of course, some debates ended very cordially, like the one through mail correspondence with late Dr Carl Sagan or with Dr David Silverman of American Atheist Organization.Edip challenges Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Lawrence Krauss and other prominent atheists. Some of Edip's debates are recorded and available at YouTube. They include Dr Carl Sagan (Late Astronomer at Cornell University), Dr Michael Shermer (Author and President of The Skeptic Society), Dr David Silverman (President of American Atheists Org), Imam Shamsi Ali (Imam of Islamic Cultural Center in NY), Dr Süleyman Ateş (former Head of Turkish Religious Affairs), Dr Haluk Oral (Math Professor at Bosporus University), Selahattin Yazıcı (Pres of Turkish Theology Graduates), Jay Smith (Evangelist), Dr John Conway (Math professor at Princeton)

THE SUNDAY TIMES TOP TEN BESTSELLER 'Honest, funny and dripping with witty aphorisms. Extremely entertaining and enlightening [...] all the way to journey's end' Herald One of our greatest voices in modern philosophy, author of The Course of Love, The Consolations of Philosophy, Religion for Atheists and The School of Life, presents a travel guide with a difference - an exploration of why we travel, and what we learn along the way... Few activities seem to promise as much happiness as going travelling: taking off for somewhere else, somewhere far from home, a place with more interesting weather, customs and landscapes. But although we are inundated with advice on where to travel to, we seldom ask why we go and how we might become more fulfilled by doing so. With the help of a selection of writers, artists and thinkers - including Flaubert, Edward Hopper, Wordsworth and Van Gogh - Alain de Botton provides invaluable insights into everything from holiday romance to hotel minibars, airports to sightseeing. The perfect antidote to those guides that tell us what to do when we get there, The Art of Travel tries to explain why we really went in the first place - and helpfully suggest how we might be happier on our journeys. 'Delightful, profound, entertaining. I doubt if de Botton has written a dull sentence in his life' Jan Morris 'An elegant and subtle work, unlike any other. Beguiling' Colin Thubron, The Times

Book Description :

Contrast to popular belief, this book demonstrates that you do not have to be religious to get benefits of philosophy attached to it. Looking at a very unique angle, this book provides a path to be self control and have contentment and happiness possible even under life dilemmas that force people to seek refuge in various religions. Surprisingly, the guidance toward this independence and contentment is presented in a simple manner by observing basic life forms. The book presents several other novelty concepts in an interesting manner that can not be read elsewhere. Author admits the guilt for not only presenting an over decorated religious concept in a very simple manner but also giving a vision for readers to view beyond that concept. Hence, this book may be categorised under self development, philosophy and also under religion. The term SOVAN comes under Buddhist domain but here that term is considered as a philosophy emphasising the value of that instead of demanding respect on it. The benefit of SOVAN is assumed obvious once the term is understood. Therefore benefits those could have been overlooked are listed instead. Author proposes partial SOVAN but never recommended not to attain full SOVAN Buddhist readers will find this book interesting as this provides a fresh view on the Buddhist concepts allowing the reader to deepen his or her understanding. As for an additional service, book states possible contradictions allowing the reader to make his or her own comparisons to improve understanding.

Book Description :

Atheists may be among the fastest growing &“religious&” demographics in the world, but they are also perhaps the most misunderstood. To begin, atheists have no identifying marks, no defining habits, no obvious symbols, for all that unites them, essentially, is an absence of belief. As a result, many religious believers may not even realize they know atheists, whether as neighbors, friends, or coworkers. In addition, most major religions warn against the faithless and preach distrust of nonbelievers. This creates not only ignorance about what it's like to be an atheist, but also fear about the very idea of atheism. Organized like an encyclopedia, this book aims to rectify this widespread distrust and suspicion with basic understanding. Each entry, written in clear, concise language, covers a specific topic or question related to being an atheist, making this the perfect primer for anyone curious about or interested in atheism—whether to learn more about why someone might become an atheist, how someone creates meaning and purpose as an atheist, and what life is like as an atheist.

Book Description :

Some argue that atheism must be false, since without God, no values are possible, and thus "everything is permitted." Walter Sinnott-Armstrong argues that God is not only not essential to morality, but that our moral behavior should be utterly independent of religion. He attacks several core ideas: that atheists are inherently immoral people; that any society will sink into chaos if it is becomes too secular; that without religion, we have no reason to be moral; that absolute moral standards require the existence of God; and that without religion, we simply couldn't know what is wrong and what is right. Sinnott-Armstrong brings to bear convincing examples and data, as well as a lucid, elegant, and easy to understand writing style. This book should fit well with the debates raging over issues like evolution and intelligent design, atheism, and religion and public life as an example of a pithy, tightly-constructed argument on an issue of great social importance. "In his call for sincere dialogue with theists, Sinnott-Armstrong provides a welcome relief from the apoplectic excesses of Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, while also addressing objections to homosexuality and evolution frequently raised by evangelical Christians." --Publishers Weekly "[I]t is accessible and lively, my hope is that it will be widely read, especially by theists."--Peter Lamal, The Humanist "... the clarity of this text successfully defuses many erroneous claims about religion and morality, both popular and academic; this volume certainly deserves a wide audience in this increasingly secular and skeptical world." -Choice "Morality Without God? is an engaging, pithy book arguing against the necessity of God and religion for a robust morality. Walter Sinnott-Armstrong has distinguished himself as a leading philosopher in his work on metaethics and moral psychology, as well as books on moral and epistemological skepticism, and in Morality Without God? he commendably succeeds in writing a philosophically respectable introduction to the problems facing religious morality suitable for virtually any audience." --Philosophia Christi

THEOLOGY FOR ATHEISTS is a joyful romp in the fields of the Lord. It opens up the possibility for atheists to join in the celebrations of a religious community; to share in their rituals and devotions without having to adopt their beliefs. Here they can join with other atheists who are already there. . . and the church needs them because it is the atheists who hold the future of the church and the survival of the planet in their hands. The text creates a common ground for atheists and people of faith - by offering secular explanations for sacred mysteries and miracles, while revering their value as myths. It provides cogent answers to the three Cosmic FAQ’s: Where do we come from? Why are we here? and Where are we going?

Arguments between those who hold religious beliefs and those who do not have been at fever pitch. They have also reached an impasse, with equally entrenched views held by believer and atheist - and even agnostic - alike. This collection is one of the first books to move beyond this deadlock. Specially commissioned chapters address major areas that cut across the debate between the two sides: the origin of knowledge, objectivity and meaning; moral values and the nature of the human person and the good life; and the challenge of how to promote honest and fruitful dialogue in the light of the wide diversity of beliefs, religious and otherwise. Under these broad headings leading figures in the field examine and reflect upon: Secular and religious humanism The idea of the sacred The vexed issue of science in both religious and secular accounts of knowledge Spirituality for the godless Non-western perspectives on the atheism/theism debate. A key feature of the collection is a dialogue between Raymond Tallis and Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury. Religion and Atheism: Beyond the Divide will interest anyone who is concerned about the clash between the religious and the secular and how to move beyond it, as well as students of ethics, philosophy of religion and religious studies.
