Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) as developed by the aircraft industry and subsequently adopted by the US Air- force, is a maintenance methodology developed primarily for newly designed systems. By supplementing the basic RCM components of FMEA analysis and MSG logic with HAZOP analysis, functional test analysis and maintenance inquiries, the methodology can also be applied to existing systems. This has been demonstrated in a study to optimize maintenance in Dutch gas supply stations. In this study further options considered were: event tree; fault tree (including computerized methods); failure analysis; and data collec- tion for which a database with inspection forms and a keyword classification system was implemented. On the basis of a mathematical model derived to analyse the reliability of gas supply stations, it can be shown that cost reductions of 50% are feasible when using the modified RCM methodology, as compared to current practice. Further- more, providing the conditions of a large number of identical units and long run times are met, the methodology can enjoy a much wider range of application than simply gas supply stations.
