Book Description :

Reliability Based Aircraft Maintenance Optimization and Applications presents flexible and cost-effective maintenance schedules for aircraft structures, particular in composite airframes. By applying an intelligent rating system, and the back-propagation network (BPN) method and FTA technique, a new approach was created to assist users in determining inspection intervals for new aircraft structures, especially in composite structures. This book also discusses the influence of Structure Health Monitoring (SHM) on scheduled maintenance. An integrated logic diagram establishes how to incorporate SHM into the current MSG-3 structural analysis that is based on four maintenance scenarios with gradual increasing maturity levels of SHM. The inspection intervals and the repair thresholds are adjusted according to different combinations of SHM tasks and scheduled maintenance. This book provides a practical means for aircraft manufacturers and operators to consider the feasibility of SHM by examining labor work reduction, structural reliability variation, and maintenance cost savings. Presents the first resource available on airframe maintenance optimization Includes the most advanced methods and technologies of maintenance engineering analysis, including first application of composite structure maintenance engineering analysis integrated with SHM Provides the latest research results of composite structure maintenance and health monitoring systems

Book Description :

The concept of concurrent engineering (CE) was first developed in the 1980s. Now often referred to as transdiciplinary engineering, it is based on the idea that different phases of a product life cycle should be conducted concurrently and initiated as early as possible within the Product Creation Process (PCP). The main goal of CE is to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the PCP and reduce errors in later phases, as well as incorporating considerations – including environmental implications – for the full lifecycle of the product. It has become a substantive methodology in many industries, and has also been adopted in the development of new services and service support. This book presents the proceedings of the 25th ISPE Inc. International Conference on Transdisciplinary Engineering, held in Modena, Italy, in July 2018. This international conference attracts researchers, industry experts, students, and government representatives interested in recent transdisciplinary engineering research, advancements and applications. The book contains 120 peer-reviewed papers, selected from 259 submissions from all continents of the world, ranging from the theoretical and conceptual to papers addressing industrial best practice, and is divided into 11 sections reflecting the themes addressed in the conference program and addressing topics as diverse as industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing; human-centered design; modeling, simulation and virtual design; and knowledge and data management among others. With an overview of the latest research results, product creation processes and related methodologies, this book will be of interest to researchers, design practitioners and educators alike.

Book Description :

Reliability Centered Maintenance – Reengineered: Practical Optimization of the RCM Process with RCM-R® provides an optimized approach to a well-established and highly successful method used for determining failure management policies for physical assets. It makes the original method that was developed to enhance flight safety far more useful in a broad range of industries where asset criticality ranges from high to low. RCM-R® is focused on the science of failures and what must be done to enable long-term sustainably reliable operations. If used correctly, RCM-R® is the first step in delivering fewer breakdowns, more productive capacity, lower costs, safer operations and improved environmental performance. Maintenance has a huge impact on most businesses whether its presence is felt or not. RCM-R® ensures that the right work is done to guarantee there are as few nasty surprises as possible that can harm the business in any way. RCM-R® was developed to leverage on RCM’s original success at delivering that effectiveness while addressing the concerns of the industrial market. RCM-R® addresses the RCM method and shortfalls in its application -- It modifies the method to consider asset and even failure mode criticality so that rigor is applied only where it is truly needed. It removes (within reason) the sources of concern about RCM being overly rigorous and too labor intensive without compromising on its ability to deliver a tailored failure management program for physical assets sensitive to their operational context and application. RCM-R® also provides its practitioners with standard based guidance for determining meaningful failure modes and causes facilitating their analysis for optimum outcome. Includes extensive review of the well proven RCM method and what is needed to make it successful in the industrial environment Links important elements of the RCM method with relevant International Standards for risk management and failure management Enhances RCM with increased emphasis on statistical analysis, bringing it squarely into the realm of Evidence Based Asset Management Includes extensive, experience based advice on implementing and sustaining RCM based failure management programs

Book Description :

In the current, increasingly aggressive business environment, crucial decisions about product design often involve significant uncertainty. Highlighting the competitive advantage available from using risk-based reliability design, Engineering Design Reliability Applications: For the Aerospace, Automotive, and Ship Industries provides an overview of how to apply probabilistic approaches and reliability methods to practical engineering problems using real life engineering applications. A one-step resource, the book demonstrates the latest technology, how others have used it to increase their competitiveness, and how you can use it to do the same. The book makes the case for accurate assessment of the reliability of engineering systems, simple, complex, or large-scale. It presents two computer programs for reliability analysis and demonstrates these programs on aircraft engines, structures used for testing explosives, medical and automotive systems. The focus then shifts to aircraft and space systems, including lap joints, gas turbines, and actively controlled space structures. The editors provide analytical tools for reliability analysis, design optimization, and sensitivity analysis of automotive systems. They include a general methodology for reliability assessment of ship structures and highlight reliability analysis of composite materials and structures. Delineating generic tools and computer programs applicable to any situation, the book shows you how to quantify, understand, and control uncertainties, reduce risk, and increase reliability using real-life examples. Engineers from the industry and national labs as well as university researchers present success stories and quantify the benefits of reliability design for their organizations. They demonstrate how to convince colleagues and management of the potential benefits of these approaches in allowing their organizations to gain significant benefits and dramatically increase their competitiveness.

Book Description :

Reliability and Maintenance of Multi-indenture Systems analyzes and discusses the optimization problems of the multi-indenture system, providing theoretical and practical insights for reliability and maintenance engineers and managers. The book combines computer simulation, operational research, reliability engineering and numerical optimization to solve practical reliability problems. After a thorough introduction to multi-indenture systems and the reliability problems associated with them, the general framework of the simulation system is proposed and explained, along with more detailed explanations of the applications. Complex hierarchical system structures have become more common in applications such as rail, aircraft and weaponry due to increasing requirements for flexibility and functionality. As a consequence, it has become increasingly difficult to use analytical methods to calculate and improve system reliability and availability of these large complex systems. However, recent research has provided proven methodologies for the application of simulation systems to tackle problems including redundancy optimization in the design phase, optimal maintenance, and spare parts provisioning in the operation phase, hence this book is an ideal contribution to the conversation. Provides in-depth explanations on how to design and apply simulation systems to reliability and maintenance problems Discusses how to reduce system maintenance time by determining line replacement units (LRU) in multi-indenture systems Describes how to adopt preventive maintenance to effectively maintain the system while optimizing the system structure
