Book Description :

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR Over the last 20+ years I've been an author, a publisher and, most importantly, a frustrated member of the publishing industry. My frustrations stem from the glacial pace of change in publishing as well as a lack of true risk-taking at the highest ranks in our industry. Several years ago I decided to start thinking out loud about where the industry should be heading and posted those thoughts on my Publishing 2020 blog. Those posts are freely accessible by anyone with a web browser, but after 7+ years they're not well organized for a first-time visitor. That's where Hyperink comes into play. I was recently approached by Hyperink to see if I'd be willing to let them curate my posts into ebook format with individual parts set up for each major topic area. I didn't have the time to do this, and since I'm a big fan of experimentation I accepted their offer to do the job for me. What you're reading right now is the results of their efforts. I hope you enjoy it and one or two of the pieces get your creative juices flowing. -Joe Wikert EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Rethinking Samples March 26, 2012 I'm bored with e-book samples. I feel like I'm collecting a bunch and then forgetting about most of them. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone and I'm even more certain this adds up to a ton of missed sales opportunities. Although this would be impossible to prove, my gut tells me the revenue missed by not converting samples into sales is a much larger figure than the revenue lost to piracy. And yet the publishing industry spends a small fortune every year in DRM but treats samples as an afterthought. Think about it. Someone who pulls down a sample is already interested in your product. They're asking you to win them over with the material you provide. Far too often though that material is nothing more than the front matter and a few pages of the first chapter. Some of the samples I've downloaded don't even go past the front matter. I'm looking for something more. Let's start with the index. Would it really be that hard to add the index to e-book samples? No. And yet I've never seen a sample with the index included. Sure, many of these books have indexes that can be viewed separately on the e-book's catalog page, but why not include them in the sample? Give me a sense of what amount of coverage I can expect on every topic right there in the sample. How about taking it up a notch? Give me the first X pages of the full content, include the entire index at the end and in between include the rest of the book, but have every other word or two X'd out? That way I can flip through the entire book and get a better sense of how extensively each topic is covered. By the way, if the entire book is included like this then the index can include links back to the pages they reference. Next up, why do I have to search and retrieve samples? Why can't they be configured to automatically come to me? After a while a retailer should be able to figure out a customer's interests. So why not let that customer opt in to auto sample delivery of e-books that match their interests? I love baseball. Send me the samples of every new baseball book that comes out. I've got plenty of memory available in my e-reader and I can delete any samples I don't want. I've also mentioned this before but it's worth saying again: How about letting me subscribe to samples from specific authors? Again, it would be an opt-in program but I wonder how many interesting books I've missed because I didn't discover the sample. Finally, this problem doesn't appear till after the sample is converted into a sale but why can't the newly downloaded e-book open up to where I left off in the sample? Seriously, this has got to be one of the easiest annoyances to fix, so why hasn't anyone taken the time to do so? Buy the book to read more! CHAPTER OUTLINE Introduction + Introduction ...and much more

"Reinventing the Wheel is equal parts popular science, history, and muckraking. Over the past hundred and fifty years, dairy farming and cheesemaking have been transformed, and this book explores what has been lost along the way. Today, using cutting-edge technologies like high-throughput DNA sequencing, scientists are beginning to understand the techniques of our great-grandparents. The authors describe how geneticists are helping conservationists rescue rare dairy cow breeds on the brink of extinction, microbiologists are teaching cheesemakers to nurture the naturally occurring microbes in their raw milk rather than destroying them, and communities of cheesemakers are producing "real" cheeses that reunite farming and flavor, rewarding diversity and sustainability at every level."--Provided by publisher.

Book Description :

Companies, communities, and individuals fall for many reasons, but one of the most common—and easily avoidable—is the failure to reinvent. When people and organizations rest on prior successes rather than driving purposeful transformation, they discover too late that they have lost their market position altogether to competitors and external forces. The most successful companies, brands, and individuals make reinvention a regular part of their business strategies. Transformation demands an ongoing process of discovery and imagination, and The Road to Reinvention lays out a systematic approach for continually challenging and reinventing yourself and your business. Venture capitalist and serial entrepreneur Josh Linkner identifies six elements in any business that are ripe for reinvention and shares examples, methods, and step-by-step techniques for creating deliberate, productive disruption. Throughout The Road to Reinvention, Linkner also explores the history—the great rise, unprecedented fall, and now rebirth—of his beloved hometown, Detroit. First rising to greatness as the result of breathtaking innovation, Detroit had generations of booming growth before succumbing to apathy, atrophy, and finally bankruptcy. Now, the city is rising from the ashes and driving sustainable success through an intense focus on reinvention. Linkner brings an insider's view of this incredible story of grit, determination, and creativity, sharing his perspective on Detroit's successes and setbacks as a profound example of large-scale organizational and personal transformation. Change is inevitable. You need to decide: Will you drive that change, or be driven away by it? Will you disrupt or be disrupted? By choosing to deliberately reimagine your own status quo, you can secure a strong future for both your company and your career.

Book Description :

Your Company Isn't Fast Enough. Here's How to Change That. The traditional hierarchical organization is dead, but what replaces it? Numerous new models--the agile organization, the networked organization, and holacracy, to name a few--have emerged, but leaders need to know what really works. How do you build an organization that is responsive to fast-changing markets? What kind of organization delivers both speed and scale, and how do you lead it? Arthur Yeung and Dave Ulrich provide leaders with a much-needed blueprint for reinventing the organization. Based on their in-depth research at leading Chinese, US, and European firms such as Alibaba, Amazon, DiDi, Facebook, Google, Huawei, Supercell, and Tencent, and drawing from their synthesis of the latest organization research and practice, Yeung and Ulrich explain how to build a new kind of organization (a "market-oriented ecosystem") that responds to changing market opportunities with speed and scale. While other books address individual pieces of the puzzle, Reinventing the Organization offers a practical, integrated, six-step framework and looks at all the decisions leaders need to make--choosing the right strategies, capabilities, structure, culture, management tools, and leadership--to deliver radically greater value in fast-moving markets. For any leader eager to build a stronger, more responsive organization and for all those in HR, organizational development, and consulting who will shape and deliver it, this book provides a much-needed roadmap for reinvention.

Book Description :

This important book picks up where Dr Deepak Chopra left off in his pioneering work Ageless Body, Timeless Mind. Having revealed the connection between our health and our thoughts, Dr Chopra shows us how to create a whole new self - the self we want to be - in this revolutionary sequel. Dr Chopra explains how the body is a reflection of the mind, 'a symbol in flesh and blood of everything you think and feel'. From early childhood each one of us has invented our bodies and our personalities through our beliefs, conditioning and responses to everyday stress. But we have mostly done this unconsciously, which is why we may now feel unfulfilled. Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul will help us to reconnect with our ideal sense of self, guiding us one step at a time through a remarkable process of renewal and discovery. Chopra invites us all to live from the soul, to satisfy our deepest desires in a life rich with joy and meaning. 'You are inventing your body in every moment of life,' he reasons. 'Why not take control and reinvent it from the highest level?'

Book Description :

Re-Inventing the Media provides a highly original re-thinking of media studies for the contemporary post-broadcast, post-analogue, and post-mass media era. While media and cultural studies has made much of the changes to the media landscape that have come from digital technologies, these constitute only part of the transformations that have taken place in what amounts of a reinvention of the media over the last two decades. Graeme Turner takes on the task of re-thinking how media studies approaches the whole of the contemporary media-scape by focusing on three large, cross-platform, and transnational themes: the decline of the mass media paradigm, the ongoing restructuring of the relations between the media and the state, and the structural and social consequences of celebrity culture. By addressing the fact that the reinvention of the media is not simply a matter of globalising markets or the take-up of technological change, Turner is able to explore the more fundamental movements and widespread trends that have significantly influenced the character of what the contemporary media have become, how it is structured, and how it is used. Re-Inventing the Media is a must-read for both students and scholars of media, culture and communication studies.

Book Description :

An intellectual tour de force, Re-Inventing Japan is a major effort to rethink the contours of Japanese history, culture, and nationality. Challenging the mythology of a historically unitary, even monolithic Japan, this important book offers a unique perspective on culture and identity in modern Japan. During the past two decades, Japan, with her distinctive culture, has been considered a model for others to emulate. At the same time, critics have questioned this emphasis on Japanese uniqueness, seeking to reveal the darker elements -- the conformity and social pressures -- inherent in Japan's economic success. This book takes the debate a step further by examining the concepts that are used to understand modern Japan, focusing on such key issues as nature, culture, race, globalization, information, and democracy, to reveal how each concept has been applied and interpreted in modern Japan. The result points to a new approach to understanding Japan's place in today's world.

"There is no other book even remotely like this. Deeply into the Bone is an exceptional, imaginative book on the topic of rites and the shaping of human life. Grimes is one of the few people who ably combines scholarly disciplines and perspectives with firsthand narratives, literary essays, films and observations of general culture. He is unquestionably a first-rate author and thinker, and this is an unquestionably magnificent book."—Lawrence Hoffman, author of Covenant of Blood "Deeply into the Bone is guaranteed to change our minds about ritual. Using a global and ethnic array of rites new and old, Grimes shows that contrary to popular belief, the ritual marking of life passages is anything but universal. By teaching us how to think comparatively we see that rites of passage are enduring rituals not for their uniformity, but because they serve as cornerstones for cultural and spiritual creativity and innovation."—Madeline Duntley, College of Wooster
