In most field applications, broadband measurements are used where the spectral product of the source distribution and the meter’s spectral responsivity is measured. This book discusses detector-based radiometric, photometric, color, radiation-temperature, digital imaging-system, and LED measurements. It also shows that, while in photometry, the meter’s standard response covers only the visible, broadband measurements in the UV and IR require different standards. To avoid large errors when using a traditional detector- or source-standard, where the differences in the source distributions and in the meter’s responsivities produce large errors, the signal measurement procedure itself must be standardized. To satisfy the steps of the procedure, selected or properly designed meters should be used. This book is a guide to performing uniform broadband measurements with low uncertainty.

The present challenge in the treatment of tumors is to reduce the number of patients that still die as a result of primary tumors. Today, the percentage of such deaths remains high at 30%, even when all the common therapeutic methods, namely surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, are applied. In order to reduce this percentage, new types of radiation sources with a higher linear energy transfer have been intro duced, such as neutrons and pions. Fractionation patterns have been modified and radiosensitizers have been applied to in crease biological efficiency. Studies of the combined application of chemotherapy and radiotherapy have been made to find the best therapeutic effect. In the early 1970s biological findings confirmed the effect of hyperthermia on tumor cells. The first clinical studies on hyper thermia treatment demonstrated that it resulted in better local tumor control. Further application of this treatment modality showed that hyperthermia should be used in addition to radio therapy and chemotherapy. Despite these encouraging results, hyperthermia has not been introduced into common clinical use, due primarily to technical problems. There are a number of methods of transferring heat into tumors; however, with regard to physical conditions, an op timum method has not yet been found. One of the reasons is that up to now we have had no reliable method of obtaining thermal mapping of all parts of the human body. Such measurements are required not only for dosimetric purposes but also for the regula tion of a hyperthermic system.

The measurement of absolute temperature under field operating conditions is usually achieved at the expense of tedious calibration using carefully controlled cryogenic devices. In this report, a technique is described by means of which such measurements can be made using only conventional laboratory hardware. Two Dicke-type radiometers have been developed and constructed which embody this technique. The measurement system that has been developed establishes the rf zero of the radiometer and determines the absolute temperature while operating in a rf-balanced condition. A simplified laboratory calibration of the device and the effect of gain stability on measurement accuracy, while observing temperatures near absolute zero, are discussed. Field measurements of sky temperature using standard gain horns and a 28-foot parabolic antenna were conducted at frequencies of 8 and 15 gHz. The experimental results of the program are compared with theoretical predictions of sky temperature for various atmospheric opacities.

This book contains a selection of refereed papers presented at the 6 Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment held in Florence, Italy on March 15-18, 1999. Over the last two decades, passive microwave remote sensing has made considerable progress, and has achieved significant results in the study of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Many years of observations with ground-based and satellite-borne sensors have made an important contribution to improving our knowledge of many geophysical processes of the Earth's environment and of global changes. The evolution in microwave radiometers aboard satellites has increased steadily over recent years. At the same time, many investigations have been carried out both to improve the algorithms for the retrieval of geophysical parameters and to develop new technologies. The book is divided into four main sections: three of these are devoted to the observation of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, and the fourth, to future missions and new technologies. The first section deals with the study of sea and land surfaces, and reports recent advances in remote sensing of ocean wind, sea ice, soil moisture and vegetation biomass, including electromagnetic modelling and the assimilation of radiometric data in models of land surface processes. The following two sections are devoted to the measurement of atmospheric quantities which are of fundamental importance in climatology and meteorology, and, since they influence radio-wave propagation, they also impact on several other fields, including geodesy, navigational satellite and radioastronomy. The last section presents an overview of new technologies and plans for future missions.
