Book Description :

Ego psychology is the aspect of psychoanalytic theory concerned with how people adapt to the demands and possibilities of their worlds in accordance with their inner requirements. All substantial theories of personality refer to adaptation, but there are several features special to ego psychology. It offers by far the most elaborate picture of the adaptive apparatus and of the varied devices humans have for negotiating among their drives and their life situations. More than any other theory of psychology, it emphasizes the complicated transactions that go on in people's minds, of which many are outside conscious awareness. Norman A. Polansky argues that we must be disciplined enough to commit ourselves to one consistent line of theory if we are to harness reasoning to go beyond what we can directly observe.Few who are, or aspire to be, caseworkers, therapists or counselors come to this book innocent of all the ideas contained herein. Much will seem familiar from previous training and from experiences with people. Moreover, many Freudian terms have been adopted into the working vocabularies of all educated people. Words like instinctual drive, defense mechanism, anxiety, guilt, conflict, unconscious, and the like, are used all the time in estimating each other. One task of Integrated Ego Psychology is defining such terms with precise meanings, as well as showing the logical connections among them.Psychoanalytic theory has envolved for about a century, and some "grand simplicities" have finally emerged. This book, for practitioners, indicates the need for a theory to guide work if we are to help people effectively. The theory must be elaborate enough to cover a very wide range of human activity and it must meet certain other standards as well.

Book Description :

People in groups act aggressively as a group, not as a collection of individuals. The Psychology of Group Aggression's comprehensive journey starts with group dynamics theory and research by reviewing its relationship to aggression. Arnold P. Goldstein then provides a unique and valuable insight into the different types and levels of intensity of anti-social behavior, examines its causes and considers its costs. In separate chapters he considers low intensity aggression, including ostracism, hazing, teasing; mid-intensity, e.g. bullying, harassment; and high intensity aggression e.g. mobs and gangs. In a final section, he considers management and intervention techniques, both those widely employed and emerging methods. An important work for both a pure and an applied audience, this will be a key reference for many, including clinical and forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, criminal justice workers, social psychologists and academics and students in criminology, psychology and sociology. Published in the Wiley Series in Forensic Clinical Psychology Series Editors: Professor Clive Hollin, University of Leicester, UK and Dr Mary McMurran, Cardiff University, UK

Book Description :

The discipline of school psychology has been shaped over the course of its existence by a series of professional and scientific controversies, and by how researchers and practitioners have responded to those controversies. Should there be an entry-level degree requirement for school psychologists? What should a school psychologist's role be with regard to student mental health? Should school psychologists work outside of school settings? Designed for students entering school psychology training programs, Introduction to School Psychology: Controversies and Current Practice examines the debates that have influenced the nature and scope of the profession, and that continue to do so today. This edited textbook is divided into five sections, the first of which describes current practices. The second offers coverage of ethics and relevant legal concerns for school psychologists; cultural competence; and consultation. The third section provides readers with the theoretical foundations of practice and includes a brief chapter on theoretical orientations. The fourth and largest section of the book examines the controversies that shape practice, presenting chapters on idiographic and nomothetic approaches; diagnostic frameworks; assessment and treatment of behavioral disorders; and much more. The final section of the book focuses on contexts and the future of the profession, with chapters on practice in urban and rural communities, technology, and the Futures Conferences.

Book Description :

At the founding in 1896 of the first psychological clinic dedicated to children and adolescents, the study of the psychological treatment of young people lagged behind that of adults, and the basic psychopathology underlying mental disorders in this population was largely ignored. Since those early days, the field has evolved steadily and, in recent years, exponentially. The Oxford Handbook of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology is a state-of-the-science volume providing comprehensive coverage of the psychological problems and disorders of childhood. International in scope and penned by the discipline's most eminent scientists and practitioners, the handbook begins with a section on conceptual and empirical issues, followed by exceptional content on specific psychiatric disorders such as intellectual disability, externalizing and internalizing disorders, communication disorders, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and many more. The third section offers chapters on special problems in childhood and adolescence, including divorce, the incarceration of parents, suicide and non-suicidal self-injury, bullying, and medical illness. A fourth section covers delivery of clinical services in diverse settings, such as schools and prisons, and the handbook concludes with several chapters on emerging trends and future directions for the field. Conceptually rich and evidence-based, this handbook is an essential resource for students, practitioners, and researchers, providing a cutting-edge compendium of the latest theoretical and empirical developments by leaders of the discipline.
