Book Description :

Prosopis (Prosopis juliflora) is a xerophyte which, in its native habitats has been a desert plant. As long as it was confined to that habitat, P. juliflora was a great resource, improving the region's micrometeorology, binding its sandy soil, and providing shelter, fuel, feed, food, medicines, and cosmetics to the people of such regions. In particular, for the economically weaker inhabitants, P.juliflora was a lifeline. But when P. juliflora was indiscriminately introduced in other regions of the world in a hope to derive similar benefits from it, things began to go awry. Indeed, among the invasive species of plants which are spreading at an alarming rate in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, P.juliflora is arguably the most hardy and resilient. It is growing so explosively that it even enters roads and homes, driving humans out of their dwellings. The resulting damage to biodiversity is enormous. This book highlights the dual role played so far by P. juliflora and itemizes the facets that make it a blessing in some contexts and a bane in other contexts. Authored by leading experts in the field, Prosopis juliflora: Attributes, Impact, Utilization is the first title of its kind to comprehensively discuss this hardy plant species. It will be an essential read for students, researchers and governmental agencies interested in plant biology, forestry, plant ecology, invasive plant species and environmental science. Summarizes all the key information available on P. juliflora, from its origin and systematics to its future prospects Discusses colonization, utilization and eradication Authored by leading experts in the field with over 40 years of experience

Book Description :

The need for agricultural research resources in the developing world cannot be underestimated, but the availability of such resources is often poor due to lack of funding and investment. In order for Africa and other such developing countries to achieve productivity in agriculture - vital to food security, poverty reduction and sustainable management of natural resources - investment and policy development needs to be assessed. This book, a joint effort from IFPRI, ILRI and the Kellogg Foundation, explores the importance of impact assessment studies in Africa, and assembles important evidence to pave the way for further, much needed investment in agricultural research all over the developing world.

Tree Crop Ecosystems

Tree Crop Ecosystems Book

Book Description :

Tree Crop Ecosystems is a unique new resource which combines the interests of traditional foresters and horticulturalists. Sixteen chapters written by international experts in the field emphasise the current topical issues besetting each of the crops considered. In the past the management of tree crops was focussed on yield without an adequate understanding of crop behaviour. Recent decades have seen many major advances in knowledge, notably those related tree biology and biodiversity within species and between different crops. Throughout the volume the issue of biodiversity is discussed as a key factor in relation to: the conservation of natural resources at risk; within species variation; and the flora and fauna associated with tree crops. Tree Crop Ecosystems is unique in taking an holistic approach to the crops, their origins and within-species variation. Direct and indirect influences of the crops on their ecosystem are considered throughout the volume. Genetic resources of these crops as well as their pests and pathogens are also included. The case studies presented in Tree Crop Ecosystems harness the most recent advances in knowledge and consider their value in practical resource management. Eleven of the sixteen chapters in this volume are concerned with the management of specific crops (temperate and tropical conifers and broad-leaves with an emphasis on eucalypts and conifers; tea, coffee, palms, apple and rubber). The remaining chapters focus on multipurpose trees, the complex of minor species and environmental influences.
