One focus of these investigations is the behavior and performance of shear tab connections in steel structures during progressive collapse events. The shear tab, a simple connection, is typically modeled as a perfect pin in standard design, but in progressive collapse analysis, a much more accurate model of its true behavior and limits is required. This report documents the development of a simple yet accurate shear tab model and its use in understanding the behavior and limits of shear tab connections in column removal scenarios. Particular attention is paid to the connections' axial force limit state, an aspect of behavior that is typically unimportant in standard design.

Progressive collapse of building structures is a relatively rare event; however, the consequences of such progressive collapses might be catastrophic in terms of injuries and fatalities. Moreover, many countries these days including United States of America, Asia and currently United Arab Emirates tend to construct buildings with innovative and complex structural geometry that follows dangerous load paths. As a result, progressive collapse measures shall be followed in order to reduce its great potential. This thesis demonstrates the analytical modeling procedures and design requirements for a 15-story steel framed regular building structure. The structural demand is computed using the Alternate Path (AP) method, for loads prescribed in the Unified Facilities Criteria-Design of Buildings to Resist Progressive Collapse (UFC 4-023-03), developed and updated by the U.S. Department of Defense. The AP method is one of the required approaches for progressive collapse resistant design of building structures that fall under Occupancy Category III or IV. The AP method is used to assess the ability of the structural frame to transfer loads carried by a notionally removed column to the rest of the structure, and ultimately to the foundation. This thesis demonstrates the process of estimating the required external load on various portions of the structure and the computation of structural demand after the notional removal of selected critical columns at lowest lovel of the structure including corner column A-1, interior columns D-2 and D-3 and edge column D-1. The analysis procedures demonstrated are Linear Static Procedure (LSP), Nonlinear Static Procedure (NSP) and Nonlinear Dynamic Procedure (NDP). Importance of moment resisting connections at appropriate locations is discussed. It is concluded that moment resisting frames in building's parameter will not be sufficient to transfer loads in the event of column loss, different columns removal locations are mentioned above. Additional moment resisting frames are needed internally, in addition to the perimeter resisting frames. Plus that Nonlinear Dynamic Procedure (NDP) is examined to have the capability of capturing the potential of progressive collapse event more sufficiently than Linear Static (LSP) and Nonlinear Static Procedure (NSP) Procedures cases.

The principal goal of the study was to evaluate an analytical procedure for predicting progressive collapse in damaged complex structures. A structure was modeled for analysis by the finite element method using relatively large, simple elements. There was little or no refinement of mesh size in areas of initial damage or damage propagation. A method was developed for determining and applying allowable stresses to help compensate for the absence of model detail. Stress results of a finite element analysis were examined by a computer post-processor program written for this study to make selective changes to the finite element model. The modified model was analyzed using the finite element method and the procedure was repeated in an iterative fashion to predict progressive collapse. Analytical results were compared to experimental test data to determine the validity of the analytical procedure. The analytical procedure provided a relatively economical method for predicting progressive collapse in a complex structure. Evaluation of a complex structure subjected to three initial damage conditions showed acceptable correlation between experimental and analytical results. The method of determining appropriate allowable stresses was general enough to apply to a wide range of materials and structures. The procedure proved to be an economical estimating tool for predicting residual structural strength. (Author).
