Book Description :

The Glenstal Book of Icons contains prayers and meditations on a selection of icons from the Abbey's Byzantine chapel. Drawing on the popular monastic practice of lectio divina, the icons themselves are seen as 'texts' giving rise to meditation on the Christian mysteries. This leads to acts of prayer, in which special emphasis is placed on the famous 'Jesus Prayer', discussed in detail in the introduction to the book. Thus the icons and the Jesus Prayer become a point of entry to the mystical spirituality of Eastern Christianity. The book's aim is that of the icon itself: to open the heart in contemplative prayer to the transforming vision of God's glory. Each icon is reproduced in full colour.

Book Description :

A close look at three classic icons of the Virgin and Child reveals profound truths about discovering God in our World. “Icons, says Archbishop Rowan, show us the way.... They help us to cross borders, to enter into a new and transfigured world. And that is exactly what I experienced as I read....This is a book to be read not once only, but many times.”—Kallistos Ware, from the Foreword What we call holy in the world—a person, a place, words, or a work of art—is so because the foreign is brought together with the familiar and the everyday. No one embodies this holiness more than Mary, who makes a home for the Creator of all things in her own body and in her own house. Ideal for all Christians—Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant—Ponder These Things invites you to explore and reflect on the depths of meaning in three classic icons from the Eastern Christian tradition. Icons have been described as “theology in line and color.” Tracing the movement within them, the Archbishop of Canterbury discovers the pattern of love that they reveal. This love invites and embraces us so that we find ourselves caught up in the drama of the love of God. Rowan Williams is a poet, theologian, and the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury. In 2013, he will become Master of Magdalene College at the University of Cambridge.

Book Description :

Icon and Devotion offers the first extensive presentation in English of the making and meaning of Russian icons. The craft of icon-making is set into the context of forms of worship that emerged in the Russian Orthodox Church in the mid-seventeenth century. Oleg Tarasov shows how icons have held a special place in Russian consciousness because they represented idealized images of Holy Russia. He also looks closely at how and why icons were made. Wonder-working saints and the leaders of such religious schisms as the Old Believers appear in these pages, which are illustrated with miniature paintings, lithographs and engravings never before published in the English-speaking world. By tracing the artistic vocabulary, techniques and working methods of icon painters, Tarasov shows how icons have been integral to the history of Russian art, influenced by folk and mainstream currents alike. As well as articulating the specifically Russian piety they invoke, he analyzes the significance of icons in the cultural life of modern Russia in the context of popular prints and poster design.

Book Description :

Within the Eastern tradition of Christianity, the eikon, or religious image, has long held a place of honor. In the greater part of Western Christianity, however, discomfort with images in worship, both statues and panel icons, has been a relatively common current, particularly since the Reformation. In the Roman Catholic Church, after years of using religious statues, the Second Vatican Council’s call for “noble simplicity” in many cases led to a stripping of images that in some ways helped refocus attention on the eucharistic celebration itself but also led to a starkness that has left many Roman Catholics unsure of how to interact with the saints or with religious images at all. Today, Western interest in panel icons has been rising, yet we lack standards of quality or catechesis on what to do with them. This book makes the case that icons should have a role to play in the Western Church that goes beyond mere decoration. Citing theological and ecumenical reasons, Visel argues that, with regard to use of icons, the post–Vatican II Roman Catholic Church needs to give greater respect to the Eastern tradition. While Roman Catholics may never interact with icons in quite the same way that Eastern Christians do, we do need to come to terms with what icons are and how we should encounter them.

Book Description :

The Holy Rosary is an inexhaustible source of divine blessings. Its excellence is attested to by countless saints from every corner of the earth down through the centuries. This book, "The Rosary with Icons: in Latin & English," delves into this treasury of grace and gathers into a single volume a well-ordered variety of good things from the Tradition of the Church which can be of benefit to people of all ages. The Large Print can serve to make this book accessible to the very young, as well as to those whose eyes are not as keen as they once were. The prayers and Scripture meditations for each Mystery are presented in both Latin and English in order to foster greater usage and appreciation for Latin, the unique "Mother Tongue" of the Roman Catholic Church. The 15 original decades are included as well as the new Luminous Mysteries given to the Church by the great Marian Pope, Saint John Paul II. Beautiful, full-color iconography from the Eastern Orthodox tradition accompany each Mystery. This feature greatly assists in the contemplation of the Lives of Christ and His Blessed Mother, the "Theotokos" or Mother of God. Saint John Paul II was singularly devoted to the the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is well-known that he chose his personal motto, "Totus Tuus," -- "All Thine" -- to reflect his great affection, trust and love for Our Lady. Being from Poland, he was also ever mindful of the Christian East, of its treasures and gifts so needed and yet so often overlooked by the West. As an Eastern Catholic, I also recognize this need for greater awareness of the Eastern Christian tradition on the part of Roman Catholics. This book is, then, also a response to the exhortation which Pope John Paul II made to the Church in his Apostolic Letter, Orientale Lumen: "Since, in fact, we believe that the venerable and ancient tradition of the Eastern Churches is an integral part of the heritage of Christ's Church, the first need for Catholics is to be familiar with that tradition, so as to be nourished by it and to encourage the process of unity in the best way possible for each." And so, my hope is that this book will find its way into the prayerful hands of people of all walks of life. It is perfectly suited for the classroom or as part of a homeschool curriculum, for the elderly, for those who love Orthodox iconography, for those growing or who wish to grow in their knowledge of Latin and who wish to learn to pray in the language of the Church without expending too much effort. Finally, this book is for anyone who loves the Rosary and it will make a wonderful gift for anyone who wishes to share that love with others.

Book Description :

How do people experience spirituality through what they see, hear, touch, and smell? Sonja Luehrmann and an international group of scholars assess how sensory experience shapes prayer and ritual practice among Eastern Orthodox Christians. Prayer, even when performed privately, is considered as a shared experience and act that links individuals and personal beliefs with a broader, institutional, or imagined faith community. It engages with material, visual, and aural culture including icons, relics, candles, pilgrimage, bells, and architectural spaces. Whether touching upon the use of icons in age of digital and electronic media, the impact of Facebook on prayer in Ethiopia, or the implications of praying using recordings, amplifiers, and loudspeakers, these timely essays present a sophisticated overview of the history of Eastern Orthodox Christianities. Taken as a whole they reveal prayer as a dynamic phenomenon in the devotional and ritual lives of Eastern Orthodox believers across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.
