Book Description :

Abstract: This dissertation discusses application of advanced power electronics in small size wind energy and hybrid systems. A new control method for maximum power tracking by employing a boost converter at a wind turbine system, using permanent magnet machine is introduced. Output voltage of the generator is connected to a fixed dc-link voltage through a rectifier and the boost converter. A maximum power-tracking algorithm calculates the reference speed as the control signal for the converter. The converter uses this signal to control the output power of the generator, by controlling the output voltage of the rectifier and input current of the converter. A current regulated voltage source inverter maintains the output voltage of the converter at a fixed value by balancing the dc-link input and output power. Moreover, a new speed estimator for maximum power tracking and a novel vector control approach are introduced. The speed estimator only needs two measurements to estimate the generator speed for maximum power-tracking. Furthermore, since the system maintenance is important and in wind energy systems the generator is not easily assessable, a robust technique for on-line condition monitoring of stator windings is introduced. In this technique the generator terminal voltage and current are utilized to monitor the stator winding condition to prevent catastrophic failure. Also a hybrid system consisting of a wind turbine, a photovoltaic, and a fuel cell is introduced. A simple control with dc-dc converter is used for maximum power extraction from the wind and sun. Due to the intermittent nature of both the wind and photovoltaic sources, the fuel cell unit is added to ensure continuous power flow. The fuel cell is controlled to provide the deficit power when the combined wind and photovoltaic sources cannot meet the net power demand. The proposed system is attractive owing to its simplicity, ease of control and low cost. Chapter 5 focuses on the design of a novel Power Conversion System to convert the energy from the hybrid system into useful electricity and provide requirements for power grid interconnections. The motivation behind developing this system is to reduce the overall cost of hybrid systems.

Book Description :

Wind energy is by far the fastest growing renewable energy due to its free availability and environmental benefits. Maximum power extraction is a way to realize high power efficiency for Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). This thesis focuses on studying the feasibility of implementing the Incremental Conductance (INC) method that has been used till now for Maximum Power Point Tracking in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Direct Driven Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) which has no gearbox is utilized in the proposed system to reduce the cost and increase the reliability of the wind turbine. A certain power conditioning topology which includes an Intermediate Boost Converter (IBC) is employed to facilitate the use of this control method. INC method is compared with the traditional Hill Climbing Search (HCS) method and the advantages of using the INC method in some operation conditions, is validated. A Matlab Simulink model is built to verify this approach.

Book Description :

The utilisation of renewable energies is not at all new; in the history of mankind renewable energies have for a long time been the primary possibility of generating energy. This only changed with industrial revolution when lignite and hard coal became increasingly more important. Later on, also crude oil gained importance. Offering the advantages of easy transportation and processing also as a raw material, crude oil has become one of the prime energy carriers applied today. Moreover, natural gas used for space heating and power provision as well as a transportation fuel has become increasingly important, as it is abundantly available and only requires low investments in terms of energy conversion facilities. As fossil energy carriers were increasingly used for energy generation, at least by the industrialised countries, the application of renewable energies decreased in absolute and relative terms; besides a few exceptions, renewable energies are of secondary importance with regard to overall energy generation.

Book Description :

The first systematic, quantitative appraisal of power density, offering detailed reviews of power densities of renewable energy flows, fossil fuels, and all common energy uses. "There's no author whose books I look forward to more than Vaclav Smil." --Bill Gates In this book, Vaclav Smil argues that power density is a key determinant of the nature and dynamics of energy systems. Any understanding of complex energy systems must rely on quantitative measures of many fundamental variables. Power density--the rate of energy flux per unit of area--is an important but largely overlooked measure. Smil provides the first systematic, quantitative appraisal of power density, offering detailed reviews of the power densities of renewable energy flows, fossil fuels, thermal electricity generation, and all common energy uses. Smil shows that careful quantification, critical appraisals, and revealing comparisons of power densities make possible a deeper understanding of the ways we harness, convert, and use energies. Conscientious assessment of power densities, he argues, proves particularly revealing when contrasting the fossil fuel-based energy system with renewable energy conversions. Smil explains that modern civilization has evolved as a direct expression of the high power densities of fossil fuel extraction. He argues that our inevitable (and desirable) move to new energy arrangements involving conversions of lower-density renewable energy sources will require our society--currently dominated by megacities and concentrated industrial production--to undergo a profound spatial restructuring of its energy system.

Book Description :

A unique electrical engineering approach to alternative sources ofenergy Unlike other books that deal with alternative sources of energyfrom a mechanical point of view, Integration of Alternative Sourcesof Energy takes an electrical engineering perspective. Moreover, the authors examine the full spectrum of alternative and renewableenergy with the goal of developing viable methods of integratingenergy sources and storage efficiently. Readers become thoroughlyconversant with the principles, possibilities, and limits ofalternative and renewable energy. The book begins with a general introduction and then reviewsprinciples of thermodynamics. Next, the authors explore both commonand up-and-coming alternative energy sources, including hydro, wind, solar, photovoltaic, thermosolar, fuel cells, and biomass.Following that are discussions of microturbines and inductiongenerators, as well as a special chapter dedicated to energystorage systems. After setting forth the fundamentals, the authorsfocus on how to integrate the various energy sources for electricalpower production. Discussions related to system operation, maintenance, and management, as well as standards forinterconnection, are also set forth. Throughout the book, diagrams are provided to demonstrate theelectrical operation of all the systems that are presented. Inaddition, extensive use of examples helps readers better grasp howintegration of alternative energy sources can beaccomplished. The final chapter gives readers the opportunity to learn about theHOMER Micropower Optimization Model. This computer model, developedby the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), assists in thedesign of micropower systems and facilitates comparisons of powergeneration techniques. Readers can download the software from theNREL Web site. This book is a must-read for engineers, consultants, regulators, and environmentalists involved in energy production and delivery, helping them evaluate alternative energy sources and integrate theminto an efficient energy delivery system.
