Abstract: Reducing CO2 emissions has become a worldwide research topic. Of all the sources of CO2 emissions, power plants burning fossil fuels, especially coals, account for a very large portion. For CO2 capture from existing coal-fired power plants, post-combustion technology is thus far considered the most viable method due to its "end-of-pipe" characteristic. Chemical absorption or scrubbing process is currently the technology most likely to be implemented in the near future but rather energy-intensive. Membrane-based CO2 separation process in recent years appears to be a competitive substitution for conventional chemical absorption technology. This paper reviews the basic process designs of chemical absorption and membrane-based separation processes for CO2 capture, as well as corresponding optimization methods including optimizing operational parameters, process modifications, membrane module types and so forth. In addition, some energetic and economic estimates from other researchers for these two CO2 capture technologies are summarized. It is found that membrane-based separation process does not possess obvious advantage over MEA-based chemical absorption process at the typical 90% CO2 capture degree in terms of both energy consumption and cost. Therefore, various optimization methods have not changed the fact that CCS technology will lay more burdens on power plants unless they can get enough allowances from government. In recent years, hybrid system with the target of utilizing more than one single capture technology seems to be new direction from the perspective of capture process design. However, it still needs to be further investigated.

Abstract: In the paper, performance models are developed for two CO2 capture technologies – (a) a chemical looping combustion (CLC) process for pre-combustion CO2 capture from the syngas of a coal-based integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant; and (b) a CaL cycle for post-combustion CO2 capture from a pulverized coal (PC) power plant –and used to conduct detailed thermodynamic analyses of IGCC and PC power plants with the respective chemical looping-based CO2 capture processes. Results from the performance models are used to estimate the capital cost ($/kW) and operating cost ($/MWh) of each capture process as well as the complete power plant. Results of the case studies using the techno-economic model indicate that, in terms of performance, both of the chemical looping technologies modelled here are thermodynamically much better than conventional CO2 capture technologies, resulting in lower overall plant energy penalties. However, both the technologies are found to be more capital-intensive. As a result, the overall cost (capital and LCOE) of plants with chemical looping CO2 capture technologies is greater than or similar to the conventional technologies.

Abstract: The fossil fuel power generation sector is facing critical decisions to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by implementing carbon capture technologies at industrial scale for transition to low carbon economy. This paper assesses the usage of reactive absorption/adsorption systems for post-combustion CO2 capture from Natural Gas Combined Cycle (NGCC) power plants. As reactive gas–liquid absorption system assessed for post-combustion CO2 capture, the alkanolamine-based gas–liquid absorption was evaluated (MDEA was considered as illustrative example). As reactive gas–solid adsorption system, the innovative Calcium Looping (CaL) method was considered. The work evaluates how chemical absorption/adsorption influence the techno-economic performances of NGCC power plants. As benchmark option used to quantify the carbon capture energy and cost penalties, NGCC plant without CO2 capture was considered. The post-combustion carbon capture options have at least 90% carbon capture rate. As the results show, CaL concept exhibits improved environmental performances (e.g. >98 vs. 90% carbon capture rate) and economic indicators (e.g. 969 vs. 1238€/kW net power as specific capital investment, 42.82 vs. 46.24€/MWh as O&M costs, 56.91 vs. 66.12€/MWh as electricity cost etc.) compared to MDEA case. Highlights: Techno-economic assessments of NGCC power generation with carbon capture. Chemical absorption and adsorption systems used for post-combustion CO2 capture.
