Book Description :

Monitoring Water Quality is a practical assessment of one of the most pressing growth and sustainability issues in the developed and developing worlds: water quality. Over the last 10 years, improved laboratory techniques have led to the discovery of microbial and viral contaminants, pharmaceuticals, and endocrine disruptors in our fresh water supplies that were not monitored previously. This book offers in-depth coverage of water quality issues (natural and human-related), monitoring of contaminants, and remediation of water contamination. In particular, readers will learn about arsenic removal techniques, real-time monitoring, and risk assessment. Monitoring Water Quality is a vital text for students and professionals in environmental science, civil engineering, chemistry — anyone concerned with issues of water analysis and sustainability assessment. Covers in depth the scope of sustainable water problems on a worldwide scale Provides a rich source of sophisticated methods for analyzing water to assure its safety Describes the monitoring of contaminants, including pharmaceutical and endocrine disruptors Helps to quickly identify the sources and fates of contaminants and sources of pollutants and their loading

Pollution Assessment for Sustainable Practices in Applied Sciences and Engineering provides an integrated reference for academics and professionals working on land, air, and water pollution. The protocols discussed and the extensive number of case studies help environmental engineers to quickly identify the correct process for projects under study. The book is divided into four parts; each of the first three covers a separate environment: Geosphere, Atmosphere, and Hydrosphere. The first part covers ground assessment, contamination, geo-statistics, remote sensing, GIS, risk assessment and management, and environmental impact assessment. The second part covers atmospheric assessment topics, including the dynamics of contaminant transport, impacts of global warming, indoor and outdoor techniques and practice. The third part is dedicated to the hydrosphere including both the marine and fresh water environments. Finally, part four examines emerging issues in pollution assessment, from nanomaterials to artificial intelligence. There are a wide variety of case studies in the book to help bridge the gap between concept and practice. Environmental Engineers will benefit from the integrated approach to pollution assessment across multiple spheres. Practicing engineers and students will also benefit from the case studies, which bring the practice side by side with fundamental concepts. Provides a comprehensive overview of pollution assessment Covers land, underground, water and air pollution Includes outdoor and indoor pollution assessment Presents case studies that help bridge the gap between concepts and practice

This book contains the proceedings of a workshop, 'Statistical Methods for the Assess ment of Point Source Pollution', held September 12-14, 1988, at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The objectives of the workshop were to: a) advance the art, science, and application of statistical methods to current water quality issues by stimulating discussions and disseminating ideas and information. The emphasis was on statistical problems associated with monitor ing and controlling discharges from industries and municipalities and assessing the impact of these discharges on receiving water quality, b) provide a forum for managers, engineers, scientists, and statisticians to present and discuss techniques for evaluating water quality data and planning monitoring activities, c) provide a published state-of-the art summary of the application of statistical methods for the assessment of point source discharges and their impact on water qUality. The papers contained in this volume cover a number of topics that are of concern not only for monitoring and assessing point source pollution but also for other environmental problems.

This most recent volume of the Statistics for the Environment titles comprises the latest research and case-study material on topics in this area, with discussions on the various ways in which statistical models and methods can be used to advance knowledge and understanding of the different aspects of the pollution problem. Containing contributions from leading world experts in the use of statistics in the environmental sciences, it is the only work of its kind at this level. As with the previous two books, the editors have produced a cohesive and comprehensive overview of recent statistical advances in the area of pollution. Topics include: Policy and Management Issues Water Quality Sampling and Monitoring Radiation Air Quality Health and Ecology An essential addition to the already successful Statistics for the Environment series, this book will be a valuable resource for statisticians and scientists interested in the quantitative and qualitative aspects of pollution control, water contamination and environmental protection and conservation and many other pollution related themes.

Book Description :

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 108. Non-point source (NPS) pollution in the vadose zone (simply defined as the layer of soil extending from the soil surface to the groundwater table) is a global environmental problem. Characteristically, NPS pollutants are widespread and occasionally ubiquitous in extent, thus making remediation efforts difficult and complex; have the potential for maintaining a relatively long active presence in the global ecosystem; and may result in long?]term, chronic health effects in humans and other life forms. Similar to other global environmental issues, the knowledge and information required to address the problem of NPS pollutants in the vadose zone cross several technological and subdisciplinary lines: spatial statistics, geographic information systems (GIS), hydrology, soil science, and remote sensing. Cooperation between disciplines and scientific societies is essential to address the problem. Evidence of such cooperation was the jointly sponsored American Geophysical Union Chapman/Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) Outreach Conference that occurred in October 1997, entitled “Applications of GIS, Remote Sensing, Geostatistics, and Solute Transport Modeling to the Assessment of Non-Point Source Pollution in the Vadose Zone.” The objective of the conference and this book, which was developed from the conference, was to explore current multidisciplinary research for assessing NPS pollution in soil and groundwater resources.

Environmental pollution is defined as the disposal of contaminants and unwanted material that can cause damage to the environment. Pollution can be classified as point source and non-point source pollution. Air dispersion models, soil sample assessments, radiation dose monitoring, oxygen reduction potential are some of the measurement techniques related to the various types of pollution. This book is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of environmental pollution assessment and mitigation. It is a resource guide for experts as well as students.
