Recent wireless communication research faces the challenge of meeting a predicted 1000x increase in demand for wireless Internet data over the next decade. Among the key reasons for such explosive increase in demand include the evolution of Internet as a provider of high-definition video entertainment and two-way video communication, accessed via mobile wireless devices. One way to meet some of this demand is by using multiple antennae at the transmitter and receiver in a wireless device. For example, a system with 4 transmit and 4 receive antennae can provide up to a 4x increase in data throughput. Another key aspect of the overall solution would require sharing radio frequency spectral resources among users, causing severe amounts of interference to wireless systems. Consequently, wireless receivers with multiple antennae would be deployed in network environments that are rife with interference primarily due to wireless resource sharing among users. Other significant sources of interference include computational platform subsystems, signal leakage, and external electronics. Interference causes severe degradation in communication performance of wireless receivers. Having accurate statistical models of interference is a key requirement to designing, and analyzing the communication performance of, multi-antenna wireless receivers in the presence of interference. Prior work on statistical modeling of interference in multi-antenna receivers utilizes either the Gaussian distribution, or non-Gaussian distributions exhibiting either statistical independence or spherical isotropy. This dissertation proposes a framework, based on underlying statistical-physical mechanism of interference generation and propagation, for modeling multi-antenna interference in various network topologies. This framework can model interference which is spherically isotropic, or statistically independent, or somewhere on a continuum between these two extremes. The dissertation then utilizes the derived statistical models to analyze communication performance of multi-antenna receivers in interference-limited wireless networks. Accurate communication performance analysis can highlight the tradeoffs between communication performance and computational complexity of various multi-antenna receiver designs. Finally, using interference statistics, this dissertation proposes receiver algorithms that best mitigate the impact of interference on communication performance. The proposed algorithms include multi-antenna combining strategies, as well as, antenna selection algorithms for cooperative communications.

Due to the tremendous increase in wireless data traffic, one of the major challenges for future wireless systems is the utilization of the available spectrum to achieve better data rates over limited spectrum. Currently, systems operate in what is termed "Half Duplex Mode," where they are either transmitting or receiving, but never both using the same temporal and spectral resources. Full-duplex transmission promises to double the spectral efficiency where bidirectional communications is carried out over the same temporal and spectral resources. The main limitation impacting full-duplex transmission is managing the strong self-interference signal imposed by the transmit antenna on the receive antenna within the same transceiver. Several recent publications have demonstrated that the key challenge in practical full-duplex systems is un-cancelled self-interference power caused by a combination of hardware imperfections, especially Radio Frequency (RF) circuits' impairments. In this thesis, we consider the problem of self-interference cancellation in full-duplex systems. The ultimate goal of this work is to design and build a complete, real-time, full-duplex system that is capable of achieving wireless full-duplex transmission using practical hardware platforms. Since RF circuits' impairments are shown to have significant impact on the self-interference cancellation performance, first, we present a thorough analysis of the effect of RF impairments on the cancellation performance, with the aim of identifying the main performance limiting factors and bottlenecks. Second, the thesis proposes several impairments mitigation techniques to improve the overall self-interference cancellation capability by mitigating most of the transceiver RF impairments. In addition to impairments mitigation, two novel full-duplex transceiver architectures that achieve significant self-interference cancellation performance are proposed. The performance of the proposed techniques is analytically and experimentally investigated in practical wireless environments. Finally, the proposed self-interference cancellation techniques are used to build a complete full-duplex system with a 90\% experimentally proven full-duplex rate improvement compared to half-duplex systems.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is investigating alternative technologies to facilitate building communication networks for future Spaceports and Ranges. This reports documents an investigation conducted from October 2002 through September 2003 of an emerging communication technology known as Ultra Wideband (UWB) communication. Contained in this report is an overview of UWB communication technology, a survey of UWB equipment vendors, and complete details of the theoretical and experimental research that was performed during this emerging communication technology investigation. The summary conclusion of this report is that UWB communication holds great promise for augmenting future Spaceport and Range communication networks through enhancing short-range, high speed, wireless communication. This enhancement is accomplished through simultaneously integrating position-aware functions with traditional communication functions. UWB technology achieves this dual-function integration through using short impulses instead of the continuous waveforms common to most wireless systems. Because short impulses are used, UWB communication links are inherently immune to most multi-path interference, and also achieve better instantaneous spectrum re-use among users. UWB modulation also provides a Low-Probability-of-Detection (LPD) waveform with selectable security. UWB systems can therefore provide fade resistant, high speed data links wherever the presence of easily detectable wireless transmissions must be avoided, such as in specialized tactical situations. Despite the many theoretical advantages that exist for UWB modulation, much anxiety commonly arises with UWB emissions because of their ultra wide bandwidths. This characteristic especially causes concern vis-à-vis possible deleterious effects to narrowband legacy systems that typically operate at low link margins, such as GPS navigation systems, which often operate with link margins of only 1 or 2 dB. Though this concern has been addressed previously in Federal regulations through the inclusion of spectral emission mask requirements for UWB emissions, not all of the technical concerns have been settled. This report further researches some of these interference concerns by investigating UWB interference to, and UWB susceptibilities from, legacy wireless systems. The summary recommendation of this report is that UWB technology appears to hold many of the key advantages needed to tackle a number of wireless systems requirements needed in the future, provided it can co-exist successfully with both legacy narrowband wireless systems, and with other UWB wireless systems. Based on the demonstrated performance seen during testing, there is ample reason to believe that UWB wireless systems will be able to coexist with most legacy wireless systems. This report is a first step in understanding and assessing UWB's applicability for supporting the communication needs of future Spaceports and Ranges.

Our main objective in this thesis is to study the effect of narrow band interference on OFDM systems operating in the 2.4 Ghz ISM band and identify ways to improve upon existing techniques to deal with them. We first consider how narrow band signals interfere with OFDM systems. Various noise variance estimation and signal to noise ratio estimation techniques for OFDM systems are then discussed. We also study the conventional Viterbi Algorithm that is used in OFDM wireless systems and the proposed modifications to it in the literature. Our main contribution is a detailed experimental analysis of a modified Viterbi Algorithm that outperforms the conventional one in the presence of narrow band interference. Interference samples captured using a wireless hardware platform were used in simulation to test this modified algorithm. From our analysis we realize that in the presence of narrow band frequency selective interference (such as Bluetooth), the conventional Viterbi Algorithm can be modified to improve the performance of OFDM systems.
