Book Description :

Jo B. Paoletti's journey through the history of children's clothing began when she posed the question, "When did we start dressing girls in pink and boys in blue?" To uncover the answer, she looks at advertising, catalogs, dolls, baby books, mommy blogs and discussion forums, and other popular media to examine the surprising shifts in attitudes toward color as a mark of gender in American children's clothing. She chronicles the decline of the white dress for both boys and girls, the introduction of rompers in the early 20th century, the gendering of pink and blue, the resurgence of unisex fashions, and the origins of today's highly gender-specific baby and toddler clothing.

Book Description :

This book is an ethnography of teachers and children in grades 1 and 2, and presents arguments about why we should take gender and childhood sexuality seriously in the early years of South African primary schooling. Taking issue with dominant discourses which assumes children’s lack of agency, the book questions the epistemological foundations of childhood discourses that produce innocence. It examines the paradox between teachers’ dominant narratives of childhood innocence and children’s own conceptualisation of gender and sexuality inside the classroom, with peers, in heterosexual games, in the playground and through boyfriend-girlfriend relationships. It examines the nuances and finely situated experiences which draw attention to hegemonic masculinity and femininity where boys and girls challenge and contest relations of power. The book focuses on the early makings of gender and sexual harassment and shows how violent gender relations are manifest even amongst very young boys and girls. Attention is given to the interconnections with race, class, structural inequalities, as well as the actions of boys and girls as navigate gender and sexuality at school. The book argues that the early years of primary schooling are a key site for the production and reproduction of gender and sexuality. Gender reform strategies are vital in this sector of schooling.

Book Description :

"If you are the parent of a boy . . . this is the book you need . . . insightful, enlightened, practical." —Peggy Orenstein, New York Times bestselling author of Boys & Sex From the dad who created the viral tweet supporting his son wearing nail polish, this essential parenting guide shares 36 parenting tips for battling gender norms, bringing down "man up" culture, and helping sons realize their potential. Our boys are in a crisis. Toxic masculinity and tough guy-ism are on display daily from our leaders, and we see anger, dysfunction, violence, and depression in young men who are suffocated by harmful social codes. Our young sons are told to stop throwing like a girl. They hear phrases like “man up” when they cry. They are told “boys will be boys” when they behave badly. The “Girl Power” movement has encouraged women to be whoever and do whatever they want, but that sentiment is not often extended to boys. Just watch the bullying when boys try ballet, paint their fingernails, or play with a doll. But we can treat this problem—and the power lies in the hands of parents. It's not only possible to raise boys who aren't emotionally stifled and shoved into stereotypical gender boxes; it's vital if we want a generation of men who can express their emotions, respect women, and help nurse society back to a halfway healthy place. We can reframe manhood. From Aaron Gouveia, who gained viral fame after tweeting his support for his son’s painted fingernails (and who knows toxic masculinity very well), learn practical and actionable tips such as: Don’t accept different standards for moms and dads Teach boys that “girl” is not an insult and retire phrases like “boys will be boys” Show boys that expressing their emotions and being physical is a good thing Let boys pursue nontraditional interests and hobbies Talk to boys about consent and privilege Model healthy and respectful relationships for boys to emulate Penned with equal parts humor, biting snark, and lived advice, Raising Boys to Be Good Men is the essential parenting guide for raising sons to realize their potential outside the box.

Book Description :

"This is a book to own, read and re-read for its insights and which should then provoke us to act so that all children at school are able to enjoy and benefit from education". Professor Debbie Epstein, Cardiff University, UK, Editor, Gender and Education "This excellent book offers evidence from a rich vein of research covering all aspects of girls' and young women's experiences of education, in and out of school, and is therefore an absolute must for all involved in teaching, learning, researching and policy-making on gender." Professor Gaby Weiner, University of Edinburgh, UK Countering claims that we live in 'post-feminist' times in which girls 'have it all' and can do, and be, whatever they like, this book explores some of the current concerns of, and about, girls today. Issues relating to girls' schooling and femininities have been sidelined and depoliticised in recent education agendas. Yet questions and concerns relating to schoolgirls' lives and experiences deserve immediate attention. Not all girls are academically successful; many girls face exclusion in schools; career aspirations are still gendered; rates of smoking and drinking alcohol are high amongst some groups of girls. With contributions from leading researchers in gender and education, this book: Draws on cutting edge research to consider ongoing problems and explore new agendas. Includes contributions relating to the entire 3-16 year age range. Considers both the within- and out-of-school experiences of girls, and locates them within wider debates about gender anxieties in contemporary education. This topical collection highlights the main issues faced by girls in Britain today, and endeavours to put girls back on the educational agenda. It is essential reading for students, academics and researchers in education, sociology, and girls' studies, as well as for school teachers and education policy makers. Book Description :

In this revised edition of his poetry collection, A Pale Shade of Blue, Tommy Melis explores topics ranging from feminism and equality to religious oppression and existential freedom. For this revision, he has added new poems written between 2011 and 2012 and included previously unreleased poetry written between 1999 and 2008, representing his earliest work. Like most Cuban Americans, he grew up in a family that celebrated their rich cultural history as both Cuban exiles and first-generation Americans. The characters represented in his poems have overcome mental illness and found healing in identifying common societal themes between the blurred lines of justice and freedom. Having to find their way to the light, they speak out of the darkness they have seen, and their relentless emotional trappings they each seek to be free from. The stories are of perseverance and often speak of things normally swept under rugs. The poems in this collection are divided into five distinct books: "Book One: The Tree Growing" represents rebirth and belief; "Book Two: Stems" considers embracing and releasing the darkness; "Book Three: Branches" speaks to oppression and cultural moldings; "Book Four: Fire" covers lessons learned; and "Book Five: Roots" looks at the connection between the poet and his reader.A Pale Shade of Blue opens up the world of a vibrant culture and the emotions associated with overcoming personal challenges for all to consider.

Plus - an array of digital resources provides even more choice and flexibility. Students can learn in the classroom or on the move with Online Practice. language assessment. The first goal is to explore the difference between fairness and justice in language assessment. The authors distinguish internal and external dimensions of the equitable and just treatment of individuals taking language tests which are used as gatekeeping devices to determine access to education and employment, immigrant status, citizenship, and other rights. The second goal is to show how the extent of test fairness can be demonstrated and improved using the tools of psychometrics, in particular the models collectively known as Rasch measurement. “This book will have an enormous impact on the field of language assessment. Using Rasch analysis models to explore and identify sources of unfairness, the authors make a compelling case for fairness in the design and implementation of language assessment instruments and for justice in the interpretation and use of test results. A real strength of the book is that it guides readers through analytical techniques in an accessible way.” Dan Douglas, Professor Emeritus, Applied Linguistics Program, Iowa State University.

Book Description :

In the new Fifth Edition of Our Social World: Introduction to Sociology, three award winning authors and teachers of sociology set out to inspire students to develop their sociological imaginations. Readers are encouraged to see the impact of larger social structures and global trends on their personal lives and to confront sociological issues on a day-to-day basis. In each chapter, authors Jeanne H. Ballantine, Keith A. Roberts, and new co-author Kathleen Odell Korgen, relate everything back to the social world model to promote “deep learning” of a fundamental sociological concept: the micro-to-macro organization of society. Above all else, adopters of this unique, easy to read, and innovative text use it because it helps their students to learn about sociology and to use sociological tools throughout the course and beyond. Their students are able to articulate what sociology is and to explain the macro to micro links in the social system. Can you identify any other introductory text which has a coherent thesis that runs throughout the text?
