Book Description :

Wolfgang Pauli was born on April 25th, 1900 in Vienna. He received his early education in Vienna before studying at the University of Munich under Arnold Sommerfeld. He obtained his doctor's degree in 1921 and spent a year at the University of Göttingen as assistant to Max Born and a further year with Niels Bohr at Copenhagen. In 1945, after being nominated by Albert Einstein, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his "decisive contribution through his discovery of a new law of Nature, the exclusion principle or Pauli principle," involving spin theory, underpinning the structure of matter and the whole of chemistry. The collection of addresses' within this volume have been collected for the first time were delivered in the main as summaries of Pauli's own special investigations, concerning themselves with the application of physical chemistry to different fields in medicine as rendered possible more particularly through advances in the physics and chemistry of organic colloids.

Book Description :

The field of bioscience methodologies in physical chemistry stands at the intersection of the power and generality of classical and quantum physics with the minute molecular complexity of chemistry and biology. This book provides an application of physical principles in explaining and rationalizing chemical and biological phenomena. It does not stick to the classical topics that are conventionally considered as part of physical chemistry; instead it presents principles deciphered from a modern point of view, which is the strength of this book.

Book Description :

With the development of a variety of exciting new areas of research involving computational chemistry, nano- and smart materials, and applications of the recently discovered graphene, there can be no doubt that physical chemistry is a vitally important field. It is also perceived as the most daunting branch of chemistry, being necessarily grounded in physics and mathematics and drawing as it does on quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and statistical thermodynamics. With his typical clarity and hardly a formula in sight, Peter Atkins' Very Short Introduction explores the contributions physical chemistry has made to all branches of chemistry. Providing an insight into its central concepts Atkins reveals the cultural contributions physical chemistry has made to our understanding of the natural world. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Book Description :

Discover the physical chemistry of charge carriers in the second edition of this popular textbook Ionic and electronic charge carriers are critical to the kinetic and electrochemical properties of ionic solids. These charge carriers are point defects and are decisive for electrical conductivity, mass transport, and storage phenomena. Generally, defects are deviations from the perfect structure, and if higher-dimensional, also crucial for the mechanical properties. The study of materials science and energy research therefore requires a thorough understanding of defects, in particular the charged point defects, their mobilities, and formation mechanisms. Physical Chemistry of Ionic Materials is a comprehensive introduction to these charge carrier particles and the processes that produce, move, and activate them. Covering both core principles and practical applications, it discusses subjects ranging from chemical bonding and thermodynamics to solid-state kinetics and electrochemical techniques. Now in an updated edition with numerous added features, it promises to be the essential textbook on this subject for a new generation of materials scientists. Readers of the 2nd Edition of Physical Chemistry of Ionic Materials will also find: Two new chapters on solid state electrochemistry and another on nanoionics Novel brief sections on photoelectrochemistry, bioelectrochemistry, and atomistic modelling put the treatment into a broader context Discussion of the working principles required to understand electrochemical devices like sensors, batteries, and fuel cells Real laboratory measurements to ground basic principles in practical experimentation Physical Chemistry of Ionic Materials is a valuable reference for chemists, physicists, and any working researchers or advanced students in the materials sciences.

Book Description :

The fourth volume of the Collected Works is devoted to Wigners contribution to physical chemistry, statistical mechanics and solid-state physics. One corner stone was his introduction of what is now called the Wigner function, while his paper on adiabatic perturbations foreshadowed later work on Berry phases. Although few in number, Wigners articles on solid-state physics laid the foundations for the modern theory of the electronic structure of metals.

Book Description :

Designed for a two-semester introductory course sequence in physical chemistry, Physical Chemistry: A Modern Introduction, Second Edition offers a streamlined introduction to the subject. Focusing on core concepts, the text stresses fundamental issues and includes basic examples rather than the myriad of applications often presented in other, more encyclopedic books. Physical chemistry need not appear as a large assortment of different, disconnected, and sometimes intimidating topics. Instead, students should see that physical chemistry provides a coherent framework for chemical knowledge, from the molecular to the macroscopic level. The book offers: Novel organization to foster student understanding, giving students the strongest sophistication in the least amount of time and preparing them to tackle more challenging topics Strong problem-solving emphasis, with numerous end-of-chapter practice exercises, over two dozen in-text worked examples, and a number of clearly identified spreadsheet exercises A quick review in calculus, via an appendix providing the necessary mathematical background for the study of physical chemistry Powerful streamlined development of group theory and advanced topics in quantum mechanics, via appendices covering molecular symmetry and special quantum mechanical approaches

Book Description :

Atkins' Physical Chemistry: Molecular Thermodynamics and Kinetics is designed for use on the second semester of a quantum-first physical chemistry course. Based on the hugely popular Atkins' Physical Chemistry, this volume approaches molecular thermodynamics with the assumption that students will have studied quantum mechanics in their first semester. The exceptional quality of previous editions has been built upon to make this new edition of Atkins' Physical Chemistry even more closely suited to the needs of both lecturers and students. Re-organised into discrete 'topics', the text is more flexible to teach from and more readable for students. Now in its eleventh edition, the text has been enhanced with additional learning features and maths support to demonstrate the absolute centrality of mathematics to physical chemistry. Increasing the digestibility of the text in this new approach, the reader is brought to a question, then the math is used to show how it can be answered and progress made. The expanded and redistributed maths support also includes new 'Chemist's toolkits' which provide students with succinct reminders of mathematical concepts and techniques right where they need them. Checklists of key concepts at the end of each topic add to the extensive learning support provided throughout the book, to reinforce the main take-home messages in each section. The coupling of the broad coverage of the subject with a structure and use of pedagogy that is even more innovative will ensure Atkins' Physical Chemistry remains the textbook of choice for studying physical chemistry.

Book Description :

This book will revolutionize the way physical chemistry is taught by bridging the gap between the traditional "solve a bunch of equations for a very simple model" approach and the computational methods that are used to solve research problems. While some recent textbooks include exercises using pre-packaged Hartree-Fock/DFT calculations, this is largely limited to giving students a proverbial black box. The DIY (do-it-yourself) approach taken in this book helps student gain understanding by building their own simulations from scratch. The reader of this book should come away with the ability to apply and adapt these techniques in computational chemistry to his or her own research problems, and have an enhanced ability to critically evaluate other computational results. This book is mainly intended to be used in conjunction with an existing physical chemistry text, but it is also well suited as a stand-alone text for upper level undergraduate or intro graduate computational chemistry courses.
