The aim of this study is to calculate the size of the stand-alone solar photovoltaic generator and water pumping system for irrigation. In addition solar photovoltaic generator connects voltage source inverter to vector controlled induction motor-pump system. Perturb and observe method is used for harvesting maximum power of photovoltaic generator. The smooth-starting of motor-pump drive is achieved through the maximum power point tracking method. The operational performance of the solar-water-pump system is kept at 60 m head and supply daily average 35,000 L/day. In this paper result is validated by the comparison fuzzy logic controller and proportional-integral controller, driven by solar-motor-pump system. The results confirmed that fuzzy logic controller based pumping system gives more accurate results as compared to proportional-integral controller based motor-pump system. The fuzzy logic controller increases the accuracy and efficiency of the solar-water-pump system.

The generation of electrical power from Photovoltaic cell is mainly dependent on solar irradiations at respective times. The study reported in this paper deals with characteristic study of existing water pumping system based on solar photovoltaic power and conventional electrical power. Thin film Cd-Te solar panels were used to power 2HP existing water pump. The performance of solar powered water pump was as equal as pump powered by conventional one. The efficiency of solar based water pump is much higher than conventional power based water pump. The maximum flow rate obtained was 69 LPM against 65 LPM for conventional power method. MPPT was used to track best operating point of solar PV array. The outcomes of reported study are important making socio-economic impact on Indian agricultural sector.

ABSTRACT: With the decline in price of the photovoltaics (PVs) their use as a power source for water pumping is the most attractive solution instead of using diesel generators or electric motors driven by a grid system. In this paper, a method to design a PV pumping system is presented and discussed, which is then used to calculate the required size of the PV for an existing farm. Furthermore, the amount of carbon dioxide emissions saved by the use of PV water pumping system instead of using diesel-fuelled generators or electrical motor connected to the grid network is calculated. In addition, an experimental set-up is developed for the PV water pumping system using both DC and AC motors with batteries. The experimental tests are used to validate the developed MATLAB model. This research work demonstrates that using the PV water pumping system is not only improving the living conditions in rural areas but it is also protecting the environment and can be a cost-effective application in remote locations.

Abstract: Prediction of water flow rate in a photovoltaic water pumping system (PVWPS) is of high importance for investors who wish to achieve an efficient management of water demand in remote and desert areas. In this paper, different prediction methods based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been investigated and compared. Data used to predict and estimate the hourly water flow rate have been acquired from an experimental PVWPS installed at Madinah site (Saudi Arabia). Results show that developed models can predict accurately the hourly flow rate based on measured hourly air temperature and solar irradiation, as input parameters. They can be used first to control the PVWPS by making a comparison between measured and predicted hourly flow rate, second to investigate the economic feasibility of the system to supply water in desert areas or isolated sites that have no access to an electric grid depending on water demand and finally fault detection based on the unexpectedly changing of delivered water amount. Operators can benefit from the proposed models. In fact, once their own PVWPS model is designed, they can predict its flow rate given the weather forecasts for the following day.

The crop water requirements are estimated for a citrus tree yard in Antalya. The optimal tilt angles are calculated for fixed, seasonal and monthly changes. The sizing results showed the validity of the proposed analytical model. Abstract: Stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) water pumping systems effectively use solar energy for irrigation purposes in remote areas. However the random variability and unpredictability of solar energy makes difficult the penetration of PV implementations and complicate the system design. An optimal sizing of these systems proves to be essential. This paper recommends a techno-economic optimization model to determine optimally the capacity of the components of PV water pumping system using a water storage tank. The proposed model is developed regarding the reliability and cost indicators, which are the deficiency of power supply probability and life-cycle costs, respectively. The novelty is that the proposed optimization model is analytically defined for two-objectives and it is able to find a compromise solution. The sizing of a stand-alone PV water pumping system comprises a detailed analysis of crop water requirements and optimal tilt angles. Besides the necessity of long solar radiation and temperature time series, the accurate forecasts of water supply needs have to be determined. The calculation of the optimal tilt angle for yearly, seasonally and monthly frequencies results in higher system efficiency. It is, therefore, suggested to change regularly the tilt angle in order to maximize solar energy output. The proposed optimal sizing model incorporates all these improvements and can accomplish a comprehensive optimization of PV water pumping systems. A case study is conducted considering the irrigation of citrus trees yard located in Antalya, Turkey. The proposed model is also compared with a computational method and it is shown that sizing results are technically and economically more suitable than computational algorithm according to the applications on a 5-yearly basis.
