Book Description :

Well organized and comprehensive, this text is richly illustrated with full-color photographs to assist with diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the peripheral ocular fundus. It covers developmental anomalies of the peripheral retina, ora serrata, and pars plana, with emphasis placed on degeneration and anomalies of the retina and vitreous which have the potential for producing a retinal break or detachment. Each condition includes a clinical description, histopathology, clinical significance, and brief discussions of treatment. Features Optomap images from the Panoramic200, which allow a full view of the peripheral retina rather than a partial view. Includes images taken with the more traditional condensing lens. Presents updated and expanded treatment descriptions for each of the clinical conditions. Features a more reader-friendly, full-color format, providing more clinical utility for the student and practitioner. Contains updated references for further study and research.

Book Description :

It gives me particular pleasure to write the foreword to this book; this is largely due to the fact that I have devoted a substantial part of my life to the improve ment of the methods used in ophthalmic research. Rarely has one of my students taken the opportunity of dealing systematically with the possibilities of these methods. Dr. Eisner is, however, one of these exceptions. First, he has substantially improved the indentation contact glass; secondly, he has, with untiring enthusiasm, made a systematic collection of the normal and pathologic findings, which, with the help of the indentation contact glass and the slit lamp, can be observed in the outermost periphery of the fundus and the ciliary body. He has compared them to findings obtained with slight magnification in autopsy eyes and to histological sections. Owing to a fortunate circumstance, W. Hess, who is both an excellent draughts man and a master of the special examination technique, was able to reproduce the visual phenomena faithfully. The reader who tries to interpret these illustrations spatially will discover that this was often not easy. It is a process which requires a certain effort of imagi nation of space, but which is very rewarding. Dr. Eisner's monograph is an introduction to a little-known branch of biomicroscopy which broadens our means of diagnosis and promises further interesting aspects for the future. I wish him well-earned success.

Book Description :

A comprehensive understanding of diseases of the peripheral retina is essential to the general ophthalmologist as well as to the vitreoretinal surgeon. Expertise in in direct ophthalmoscopy, scleral depression, and contact lens biomicroscopy serves as a basis for observing the peripheral retina. These observations are then re corded on fundus drawing paper and the Tolentino vitreo-retinal chart. This or derly sequence of skills allows the ophthalmic surgeon to objectively diagnose and evaluate specific peripheral retinal disorders and plan for their therapeutic management. The Clinical Atlas of Peripheral Retinal Disorders is a compilation of fundus paint ings by David A. Tilden based on our observations of a large number of patients over the past 15 years. The atlas is organized along functional and anatomical lines. After a brief introduction to the clinical anatomy of the peripheral retina, the appearance of the fundus as a function of skin color and aging is presented. Many of the diseases of the peripheral retina can be divided into trophic (nutritional), tractional, and a combination of trophic plus tractional etiologies. This classifica tion system, although somewhat simplistic, appears adequate for our present level of understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms of these disorders. Un doubtedly, once the molecular biology of these conditions is elucidated through future research, the classification will be revised. In addition, there are other con ditions that affect the peripheral retina that do not fit the proposed classification system and are covered under separate headings, i. e.

Book Description :

This report for the Belgian Ophthalmological Society concerns a number of fundus diseases, which most ophthalmologists only rarely encounter. Still it is of importance that they should be able to recognize them, not only because most of these eye diseases are treatable when they are diagnosed early enough, but also because they are sometimes associated with major visceral and neurological problems. The ophthalmologist may be the first practitioner to suspect a von Hippel-Lindau's disease or a neurofibromatosis. He should realize at that moment that his role is not only to treat the eyes but also to advise his patient, refer him to other specialists and consider the genetical implications of his diagnosis. Clinicopathologic correlations are of great importance and we felt that it was necessary to emphasize the histopathological aspect of these diseases. A report has to overview the literature on a specific topic. The literature on vascular tumors of the fundus is extremely vast and even if we tried to be as complete as possible, we must confess that we did not cite every author who published on such cases. A third aspect, which was considered as important, was to provide sufficient clinical and histopathologic examples of the various disease, which are reviewed. We are indebted to a large number of friends who kindly authorized the publication of their material. In particular we wish thank Prof. A. Brini (Strasbourg), Dr. D. de Wolff-Rouendaal (Leiden), Prof. P.

Book Description :

Dominant exudative vitreoretinopathy (DEVR) is an eye disease which has only recently received wider attention. In 1969 Criswick and Schepens used the designation "familial exudative vitreoretinopathy" to describe a syndrome they observed in six patients belonging to two families. The condition was characterized by several symptoms involving the vitreous and retina, e. g. "posterior vitreous detachment, organized vitreous membranes, heterotopia of the macula, retinal neovascularizations, subretinal and intraretinal exudates, and localized retinal detachment". The clinical features impressed the authors as strongly reminiscent of retrolental fibroplasia, but none of the patients had a record of premature birth or postnatal oxygen administration. In 1971 Cow and Oliver described the same syndrome in several members of one family. They considered their findings to be compatible with auto somal dominant transmission. Canny and Oliver (I976) were the first to de monstrate the fluorescein-angiographic changes of DEVR in four members of the abovementioned family. The most striking finding was "abrupt cessation of the capillary network in a scaloped edge near the equator". Fluorescein was seen to leak from the retinal vessels localized in this marginal zone, and in some eyes from massive fibrovascular lesions as well. Similar fluorescein angiographic changes have been described in recent years in other reports on families with DEVR (Nijhuis et aI., 1979; Slusher and Hutton, 1979; Dudgeon, 1979; Ober et a1., 1980; Laqua, 1980). In 1979 I commenced a clinical study of this still little-known condition at the Nijmegen University Institute of Ophthalmology (The Netherlands).
