Book Description :

Performance Evaluation in the Human Services is a practical, specific book for managers on how to conduct performance evaluations. The book moves beyond the traditional rating scale and focuses on a new model involving the employee in the evaluation process. It stresses the need for evaluation scales to match the job description in a manner that is educational, future-oriented, and time-saving. Managers who must conduct performance reviews will find that this book presents a unique advancement on the use of behaviorally anchored rating scales for evaluation. The authors focus on the developmental/educational components of evaluation and stress employee empowerment as a result of evaluation. The authors have created an employee review system with three core components. The new appraisal model works on a “One Size Fits All” philosophy. It can be applied to all employees while the exact evaluating qualities differ as each job description does. Fundamental features of this new evaluative model include: the use of the “Benchmark” concept, a scale which indicates the level of the organization’s expectations and balances the administrative (evaluative) components and professional (developmental) issues BARS, Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales CORE and A LA CARTE Dimensions which allows for evaluation of generic aspects of performance and job specific components the use of traditional approaches to evaluation such as trait-based scales and forced comparison techniques The rating system in Performance Evaluation in the Human Services serves as a means of identifying areas for middle and upper managers to identify areas for employees’professional growth and self-development. This approach is goal-oriented and can change and grow with the employee and the organization. Most importantly, it is built by both staff and management to be used as a tool for working together to define specific job requirements and how these requirements can be met and evaluated.

Book Description :

The main aim of this book is to present an intriguing retrospective of Building Performance Evaluation (BPE) as it evolved from Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) over the past 25 years. On one hand, this is done by updating original authors' chapter content of Building Evaluation, the first edition published in 1989. That, in turn, is augmented by an orientation toward current and future practice on the other, including new authors who are engaged in ongoing, cutting edge projects. Therefore, individual, methodology oriented chapters covering the fundamental principles of POE and BPE go along with major thematic chapters, topics of which like sustainability or integration of new technologies are addressed in a diversity of case studies from around the globe. Research, methodologies, and framework of POEs continue to evolve. POEs are one step, on the larger scale of BPE, in understanding how buildings function after they are occupied. This resource helps a rchitects, building owners, and facility managers understand the implications and reactions to the facilities that they designed, built and/or commissioned. By considering the whole process from conception to future uses of the building, there can be a more holistic approach to the planning, programming, design, construction, occupancy, and future adaptability of the structure. This book is dedicated to first editor Wolfgang F. E. Preiser who passed away during the process of editing and reviewing chapters of this volume.

Book Description :

The latest advances in process monitoring, data analysis, and control systems are increasingly useful for maintaining the safety, flexibility, and environmental compliance of industrial manufacturing operations. Focusing on continuous, multivariate processes, Chemical Process Performance Evaluation introduces statistical methods and modeling techniques for process monitoring, performance evaluation, and fault diagnosis. This book introduces practical multivariate statistical methods and empirical modeling development techniques, such as principal components regression, partial least squares regression, input-output modeling, state-space modeling, and modeling process signals for trend analysis. Then the authors examine fault diagnosis techniques based on episodes, hidden Markov models, contribution plots, discriminant analysis, and support vector machines. They address controller process evaluation and sensor failure detection, including methods for differentiating between sensor failures and process upset. The book concludes with an extensive discussion on the use of data analysis techniques for the special case of web and sheet processes. Case studies illustrate the implementation of methods presented throughout the book. Emphasizing the balance between practice and theory, Chemical Process Performance Evaluation is an excellent tool for comparing alternative techniques for process monitoring, signal modeling, and process diagnosis. The unique integration of process and controller monitoring and fault diagnosis facilitates the practical implementation of unified and automated monitoring and diagnosis technologies.

Book Description :

Information Highways are widely considered as the next generation of high speed communication systems. These highways will be based on emerging Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN), which - at least in principle - are envisioned to support not only all the kinds of networking applications known today but also future applications which are not as yet understood fully or even anticipated. Thus, B-ISDNs release networking processes from the limitations which the communications medium has imposed historically. The operational generality stems from the versatility of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is the transfer mode adopted by ITU-T for broadband public ISDN as well as wide area private ISDN. A transfer mode which provides the transmission, multiplexing and switching core that lies at the foundations of a communication network. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to minimise the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to bound transmission delays. These design objectives are met at high transmission speeds by keeping the basic unit of ATM transmission - the ATM cell - short and of fixed length.

Book Description :

This book examines performance evaluation in the context of assessing the non-financial outcomes of human activities. The topic is particularly relevant when economic, environmental or social performance has to be evaluated, e.g. the efficiency of actions and the lifecycles of products. The authors combine multi-criteria decision-making and production theories to develop a theoretical and methodological foundation for performance evaluation. They also demonstrate the typical pitfalls that are hindering the implementation of contemporary methods in practice. Special emphasis is placed on efficiency measurement with data envelopment analysis (DEA), and on data aggregation in life cycle assessment (LCA).
