Book Description :

In surgical pathology practice, distinguishing malignant from benign melanocytic lesions represents one of the major problem areas. Failure to diagnose a malignant melanoma can have catastrophic results, but separating melanomas from their simulants is often difficult, and over-diagnosis of melanoma is also inappropriate. This edition presents a comprehensive account of benign and malignant melanocytic lesions. The benign lesions encompass the major simulants of melanoma. In addition, some of them, such as dysplastic nevi, have significance as markers of individuals at increased risk for the development of melanoma. It has become ever more apparent, especially with the recent advent of molecular classification, that melanoma is not one disease, and that prognosis in melanoma can vary considerably from lesions that present minimal risk, to dangerous malignancies at opposite ends of a spectrum. The details of therapy for these lesions are very different and are determined for the most part by their diagnostic and prognostic features as judged by microscopy. This edition explains in detail the use of attributes for microstaging and for prediction of prognosis in melanoma, including discussion of the latest AJCC staging system. More importantly, however, it provides a richly-illustrated roadmap for diagnosis of the entire spectrum of melanocytic tumours. Discussion of the lesions is firmly grounded in their clinical significance, with detailed descriptions of clinical features often accompanied by clinical images. Lesions in general are illustrated in multiple microscopic images ranging from scanning magnification to high power. Cytologic as well as architectural features are clearly delineated. Pathophysiology, epidemiology, and molecular attributes are also discussed. This work will serve as a comprehensive text for learning on the part of trainees, and also as an invaluable diagnostic reference for more experienced diagnosticians in daily practice.

Book Description :

In this new edition, the authors succinctly summarise clinical literature but also concentrate on both new entities and new concepts described since the publication of the third series ten years ago. The illustrations, with the exception of radiographs and electron micrographs, are in colour, and tumours are presented in detail. The continuing importance of tumour morphology in directing molecular studies is appropriately emphasised. In addition to the extensive discussion, illustrations, and up-to-date referencing of the numerous pancreatic tumours and tumour-like lesions, important discussions have been provided on normal gross, histologic and cytologic findings, and on pancreatic tumour staging. These discussions complement the authors' treatment of the often confusing issue of frozen section interpretation, dissection, and reporting of pancreatic resection specimens, and an ""unknown"" pancreatic biopsy or cytology specimen. This volume should be the definitive reference on pancreatic tumour for years to come.

Book Description :

If a single term could capture the essence of the career of A. Bernard Ackerman, it is originality. His distinctive form of pedagogy has revolutionized thinking, not only in dermatopathology, but also in clinical dermatology and general pathology. That unique mode of teaching during the last 25 years has been delivered at a multiheaded microscope to which thousands of eager students from all parts of the world have flocked. Now comes a new volume from Bernie Ackerman that he regards as the most original, daring, and instructive of all of his books. It represents a distillation of his vast knowledge of dermatopathology and serves as the perfect vehicle for his critical assessment of what he regards as shibboleths in contemporary dermatology, pathology, and dermatopathology. Resolving Quandaries is a tour de force that illuminates 100 exceedingly vexing issues considered universally to be integral to those fields. Whether or not you agree with Dr. Ackerman, you cannot help but be riveted by his incisive dissection of current "truths," such as "epidemic of melanoma" (he denies it and gives cogent reasons why), "apoptosis" (he refutes it and advances the notion that it is merely a type of necrosis), and "fibromatosis" (he musters compelling arguments against it and denies the very validity of the concept). Each of the 100 subjects taken on by Bernie is couched in historical perspective, a theme that is developed fully by his employment of a novel device: direct quotations from proponents of views contrary to his are placed next to his own on nearly each page throughout the work. There is nothing like Resolving Quandaries in the literature of medicine, and inquisitive students of dermatology, pathology, and dermatopathology will not be disappointed by this latest effort of A. Bernard Ackerman in the service of intellectual inquiry, fervor, rigor, honesty, and delight.

Book Description :

The interpretation of melanocytic tumors represents probably the most difficult task in the field of dermatopathology. The second edition of this text and atlas depicts a broad range of the most important and most challenging melanocytic lesions. Each individual case is illustrated with at least three high-quality color photographs and is commented on at length, highlighting the diagnostic clues. The goal of the authors is to assist the ordinary pathologist in making a precise workable diagnosis in their daily practice. They achieve this by providing simple criteria that will serve as a sound basis for an unequivocal diagnosis of either a benign or a malignant melanocytic neoplasm. The reader will find Histological Diagnosis of Nevi and Melanoma to be an invaluable guide to correct diagnosis even in difficult or rare cases.
