Developing countries are in urgent need of new diagnostic technologies designed for use in resource-limited settings. Diagnostic devices made out of patterned paper, collectively called microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (uPADs), have been developed to address this need. MicroPADs offer rapid and multiplexed analysis of small volumes of fluid in an inexpensive platform that does not require external supporting equipment or power sources to operate, combining the capabilities of traditional microfluidic devices with the simplicity of diagnostic strip tests. This dissertation describes a complete system for detecting disease in resource-limited settings, including methods for fabricating IAPADs, methods for performing assays on uPADs, and methods for quantifying the results of the assays.
