Primum non nocere... The fact that a surgical procedure can leave any kind of pain casts a shadow over this tenet, which is seen as the basis of medical practice and anchor of its principle ethic... It is all the more surprising in that medicine has only paid attention to this paradoxical chronic pain situation for the past few years. Clarifying the knowledge acquired in this field has become all the more urgent for any care-giver today confronted by a legitimate request from patients: Why and how can a surgical procedure, which is supposed to bring relief, leave behind an unacceptable sequela? This is the approach which the contributors to this new subject of major clinical interest invite you to follow as you work your way through this book.

Book Description :

Regenerative medicine (RM) is a rapidly expanding topic within orthopedic and spine surgery, sports medicine and rehabilitation medicine. In the last ten years, regenerative medicine has emerged from the fringes as a complement and challenge to evidence-based medicine. Both clinicians and patients alike are eager to be able to offer and receive treatments that don't just surgically replace or clean old joints or inject away inflammation or work as a stop-gap measure. Regenerative medicine encompasses everything from the use of stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to prolotherapy, viscosupplementation and beyond. This book will provide healthcare practitioners dealing with spine and joint pain with the most current, up-to-date evidence-based information about which treatments work, which treatments don't, and which are on the horizon as potential game changers. Chapters are arranged in a consistent format and cover the spine, shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist, hip, knee, and foot and ankle, providing a thorough, top-to-bottom approach. A concluding chapter discusses current and future directions and applications of RM over the next decade or two. Timely and forward-thinking, Regenerative Medicine for Spine and Joint Pain will be a concise and practical resource for orthopedists, spine surgeons, sports medicine specialists, physical therapists and rehabilitation specialists, and primary care providers looking to expand their practice.

Book Description :

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Book Description :

This book presents a compilation of topics related to primary total knee arthroplasty. The chapters cover, in a clear and didactic way, the current themes, written by experts from the area, from different parts of the world. Topics related to the three surgical phases (before surgery, during surgery, and after surgery) are discussed here. This is very important because the surgeon is not a "factory worker." First of all, it is a medicine doctor who has to feel and understand the particularities of each patient. Demographic studies show an aging population. Osteoarthritis and inflammatory diseases are becoming much more prevalent. In addition, a worldwide epidemic of trauma has led to the need for arthroplasties much more frequently. Therefore, total knee arthroplasty will be an increasingly important subject.

Acute Pain Medicine is the first comprehensive, case-based text of its kind that explores the essential topics of acute pain medicine, including interventional, pharmacologic, and diagnostic considerations. Written and edited under the auspices of the American Academy of Pain Medicine by members of the Academy's Shared Interest Group for Acute Pain Medicine, the text includes an introduction to acute pain medicine and an easily referenced interventional section. Chapters focus on patients experiencing acute pain from either surgery or other medical conditions and include detailed information on the diagnosis and treatment of specific cases in acute pain medicine. The text is rounded out by the complete content of the thoroughly revised Military Advanced Regional Anesthesia and Analgesia Handbook (MARAA II). Although the MARAA handbook gained its reputation as a useful resource for managing the pain associated with battlefield trauma, its beautifully illustrated step-by-step guidance is useful for providing vital acute pain services in all settings. Acute Pain Medicine is an ideal, complete resource for physicians, fellows, and residents managing acute pain patients.

Book Description :

If you're reading this, your knees have likely been causing a lot of pain for a long time--perhaps months and even years. You may be among the thousands of people whose pain is so intense it's caused them to forfeit some or all daily activities, cut down on or altogether eliminate important exercise, miss out on good times with family and friends, and even compromise a job and income to accommodate it. In The Pain-Free Knee: How To Have a Healthy, Happy Knee...Surgery-Free, Campbell Medical Clinic Director Suhyun An, DC, BSN, RN presents safe, conservative, natural, and highly effective alternative therapies to conventional methods of addressing knee or other joint pain. Often the go-to paths to healing sought by world class athletes, these alternatives can provide complete pain relief, increased mobility, and significantly diminished recovery time compared to a surgery option. What's more, surgery--which involves time away from work and an exorbitantly high price tag (what about your high insurance deductible?)--can fail, leaving you in as much or even more pain than when you started. The fact that we always use our knees is no small matter. Every time we sit, stand, walk, squat, or run, we require our knees to perform. Perhaps you've been told by your physician that for chronic pain, heavy drugs that may impair the way you function and/or surgery to repair or replace a joint are inevitable--and in fact the only options. But like a lot of things in healthcare, that kind of information is ancient history or even pure myth. There is another way
