Caring for children with heart disease is extremely complex, requiring a different and often tailor-made approach compared with adults with similar cardiac problems. Built on the success of previous editions and brought to you by a stellar author team, Pediatric Cardiology: The Essential Pocket Guide provides a unique, concise and extremely practical overview of heart disease in children. From history-taking, physical examination, ECG, and chest X-ray – the basics that enable clinicians to uncover possible problems and eliminate areas of false concern – it goes on to examine the range of more complex topics in the diagnosis and treatment/management of childhood cardiovascular disease. New to this edition you’ll find: An enhanced section on imaging including recent advances in cardiac MRI and fetal echocardiography. New techniques in genetic testing for heart disease in special populations. Much more emphasis on the importance of echocardiography in understanding the pathophysiology of congenital cardiac malformations. Expanded section on cardiac conditions in the neonate, specifically on prenatal diagnosis and management, neonatal screening for congenital heart disease, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Expanded and updated congestive cardiac failure section, including the latest in genetic and metabolic causes of heart failure, and medical/surgical treatment options; discussion of bridging therapies; essentials of transplantation, including common drug treatment regimens, clinical recognition of treatment complications and rejection, outcomes, morbidity and survival. In addition, every chapter is fully updated with the very latest clinical guidelines and management options from the AHA, ACC and ESC. Book Description :

Heart disease in children has a number of diagnostic traps for the unwary, and all of us involved in the specialty have been caught at one time or another. For example, it is sometimes very difficult to differentiate between respiratory and cardiac disease in infants and between neurological and cardiac conditions in older children, and the consequences of taking the wrong path can be significant. This book is a collection of cases highlighting situations which can ensnare even the best cardiologist. Although they illustrate the importance of taking a good history and performing a thorough examination, the most important lesson is learning to keep an open mind and develop the ability to think laterally. As clinicians we need to have the confidence to make a decision for our patients but also the humility to be able to acknowledge that we don’t always get it right first time, and it is imperative that we learn from the experience. We hope the reader will find these short chapters interesting and while they are not evidence-based medicine in the true sense, they do represent a wide range of clinical experience from which we can all learn.

Book Description :

Recent advances have revolutionized diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in pediatric cardiology. Powerful new diagnostic techniques include color Doppler echocardiography, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Catheter-directed treatment of cardiac lesions with balloons and stents has become the treatment of choice, and cardiac arrhythmias in infancy and childhood are treated with radio-frequency ablation. To provide an update on these and other recent developments, the First Asian-Pacific Symposium on Pediatric Cardiology was held in Taipei in November 1994, attended by pediatricians, cardiologists, and surgeons, many of them of world renown. This book, a collection of the papers presented at the symposium, will contribute to improved recognition, understanding, and treatment of many important congenital and acquired heart problems in children. It will be of special interest to pathologists, pediatricians, cardiologists, and surgeons whose work involves care of infants and children with heart disease.

Book Description :

Congenital heart diseases are the most common neonatal malformations, ranging from 8 to 15/1000 live births in various communities. Improvement of knowledge in the genetic and etio-pathogenic aspects of these malformations as well as the technical advances of diagnostic and therapeutic tools have brought about a significant improvement in overall long-term patient outcome over the last few decades. This e-book is an update on the most recent genetic, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this pediatric cardiology. Specifically, the book explains, in detail, recent acquisitions in the field of interaction between the genome and heart development, advances in diagnostic non-invasive techniques and novel therapeutic applications of the percutaneous and “hybrid” cardiologic/surgical procedures. These developments in diagnostics and therapeutics will be extremely valuable for both pediatric and adult cardiologists treating patients with congenital heart defects.

Book Description :

At a significant point in the life of an individual or an organization, it is normal that one reminisces and savors the qualities of the past. In doing so, one may learn of facts and factors that explain the present and even project into the future. So it is with the Second World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology. We can at this time avail ourselves of a panoramic view, not only of the present but also an exposure of the past, and a glimpse of what lies ahead. When Dr. Jane Somerville and Professor Fergus Macartney proposed developing a World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology, the factors of vision and imagina tion were driving forces. These, with the aid both of hard work and dedication to purpose, led to the being of the First Congress. The major success of that meeting was not without premonitory concerns as to the width of multinational acceptance of a concept that Pediatric Cardiol ogy had come of age and a firm foundation for academic interchange existed. The Congress showed that much had been learned, and that there were many eager to share of accumulated knowledge and reflections of skills with the very many hundreds who came to the First Congress. The responses to the First Congress were so enthusiastic that the idea of having a continuum of World Congresses of Pediatric Cardiology was widely accepted. I do not know that the subject was even debated after the First Congress went into session.
