Oxy-fuel combustion has the potential to reduce the atmospheric CO2-emissions of fossil fuel power plants by burning gaseous or solid fuels under an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and oxygen. The combustion under oxy-fuel operating conditions, however, is accompanied by major changes in the combustion behavior. The underlying chemical and physical processes are complex and highly coupled, which impedes investigations and modeling. Since tactile and most of the optical measurement techniques fail under the sensitive and simultaneously harsh environments of oxy-fuel combustion, an optical in-situ measurement system based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy is developed in this work. This system allows to investigate the thermochemical state of combustion gases with respect to the quantitative concentrations of multiple combustion-relevant gases and the gas temperature. In combination with a newly developed and applied measurement strategy, the system even allows for a measurement of the gas residence time distribution. To improve the measurement accuracy, multiple absorption line parameters are experimentally determined. The measurement system is applied to three oxy-fuel combustion systems. First, the thermochemical state of the laminar, non-premixed methane combustion under oxy-fuel atmosphere is studied. The turbulent, premixed combustion of the same fuel under air and two oxy-fuel atmospheres is studied in a 20 kWth swirled combustor. Measurements of the residence time distribution of fluids in the combustion chamber provide insights into mixing and transport properties of the flow. The thermochemical state reveals insights into the reaction progess and flow mixing. Co-firing of three different solid fuels in an assisting gas flame is investigated for a combined thermal power up to 40 kWth. Here, the char burnout of the particles is investigated. The thermochemical state of the combustion of pure torrefied biomass under air and oxy-fuel combustion atmosphere is investigated in a 60 kWth close-to-application facility and compared to equillibrium calculations.

Oxy-fuel combustion is a promising technology to implement carbon capture and sequestration for energy conversion to electricity in power plants that burn fossil fuels. In oxy-fuel combustion, air separation is used to burn fuel in oxygen to easily obtain a pure stream of carbon dioxide from the products of combustion. A diluent, typically carbon dioxide, is recycled from the exhaust to mitigate temperature. This substitution of carbon dioxide with the nitrogen in air alters the thermodynamics, transport properties, and relative importance of chemical pathways of the reacting mixture, impacting the flame temperature and stability of the combustion process. In this thesis, methane oxy-combustion flames are studied for relevance to natural gas. First, a numerical 1-D strained flame shows significantly reduced consumption speeds for oxy-combustion compared to air combustion at the same adiabatic flame temperature. Competition for the H radical from the presence of carbon dioxide causes high CO emissions. Elevated strain rates also cause incomplete combustion in oxy-combustion, demonstrated by the effect of Lewis number with a value greater than one for flame temperatures under 1900 K. Most of this work focuses on experimental results from premixed flames in a 50 kW axi-symmetric swirl-stabilized combustor. Combustion instabilities, upon which much effort is expended to avoid in gas turbines with low pollutant emissions, are described as a baseline for the given combustor geometry using overall sound pressure level maps and chemiluminescence images of 1/4, 3/4, and 5/4 wave mode limit cycles. These oxy-combustion results are compared to conventional air combustion, and the collapse of mode transitions with temperature for a given Reynolds number is found. Hysteresis effects in mode transition are important and similar for air and oxy-combustion. Blowoff trends are also analyzed. While oxy-combustion flames blow off at a higher temperature for a given Reynolds number due to weaker flames, there is an unexpected negative slope in blowoff velocity vs temperature for both air and oxy-combustion. The blowoff data are shown to collapse due to blowoff velocity being inversely proportional to the molar heat capacities of the burned gas mixtures at a given power. Finally, particle image velocimetry results are discussed to relate flow structures to corresponding flame structures.

Oxy-fuel combustion has been used previously in a wide range of industrial applications. Oxy- combustion is carried out by burning a hydrocarbon fuel with oxygen instead of air. Flames burning in this configuration achieve higher flame temperatures which present opportunities for significant efficiency improvements and direct capture of CO2 from the exhaust stream. In an effort to better understand and characterize the fundamental flame characteristics of oxy-fuel combustion this research presents the experimental measurements of flame stability of various oxyfuel flames. Effects of H2 concentration, fuel composition, exhaust gas recirculation ratio, firing inputs, and burner diameters on the flame stability of these fuels are discussed. Effects of exhaust gas recirculation i.e. CO2 and H2O (steam) acting as diluents on burner operability are also presented. The roles of firing input on flame stability are then analyzed. For this study it was observed that many oxy-flames did not stabilize without exhaust gas recirculation due to their higher burning velocities. In addition, the stability regime of all compositions was observed to decrease as the burner diameter increased. A flashback model is also presented, using the critical velocity gradient gF) values for CH4-O2-CO2 flames. The second part of the study focuses on the experimental measurements of the flow field characteristics of premixed CH4/21%O2/79%N2 and CH4/38%O2/72%CO2 mixtures at constant firing input of 7.5 kW, constant, equivalence ratio of 0.8, constant swirl number of 0.92 and constant Reynolds Numbers. These measurements were taken in a swirl stabilized combustor at atmospheric pressure. The flow field visualization using Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) technique is implemented to make a better understanding of the turbulence characteristics of CH4/air and CH4/38%O2/72%CO2 combustion. The velocity fluctuations, turbulence intensities and local propagation velocities along the combustion chamber have been determined. The turbulent intensities increase as we move away from the combustor axis. CH4-38%O2-72%CO2 flames have low radial velocity and turbulent intensity distributions at different axial distances when compared with CH4-Air flames.

Oxy-fuel combustion is based on burning fossil fuels in a mixture of recirculated flue gas and oxygen, rather than in air. An optimized oxy-combustion power plant will have ultra-low emissions since the flue gas that results from oxy-fuel combustion consists almost entirely of CO2 and water vapor. Once the water vapor is condensed, it is relatively easy to sequester the CO2 so that it does not escape into the atmosphere. A variety of laboratory tests comparing air-firing to oxy-firing conditions, and tests examining specific simpler combinations of oxidants, were conducted at 650-700 C. The world's growing energy demand coupled with the problem of global warming have led us to investigate new energy sources that can be utilized in a way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions than traditional fossil fuel power plants. One of these unconventional fuels is sour gas. Sour gas consists of mainly methane, containing large concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. Over 30% of the world's natural gas reserves are considered sour. However this unusual fuel poses many challenges due to the toxic and corrosive nature of the combustion products. One of the most promising technologies for carbon capture and sequestration is oxy-fuel combustion. This involves separating the nitrogen from air prior to the combustion itself. Then, after combustion, we separate the water and other substances and can use the resulting carbon dioxide stream for enhanced oil recovery representing an added economic benefit of this system. Firing temperatures for pure oxygen combustion can reach values up to 2500° C, which is well above what the combustor can handle. Therefore a diluent has to be added to reduce the temperature back to appropriate levels, but the key question is how this impacts the efficiency and performance of the entire cycle. Hence, if feasible, the use of sour gas in an oxy-fuel power plant could potentially allow us to harness the economic and environmental potential of this unconventional fuel. Depending on the cycle configuration, water or carbon dioxide can be used as diluents to control the flame temperature in the combustion process. All of these cycle types were modeled and the cycles' performances and emissions were studied. When the working fluid condenses in the cycle, sulfuric acid is formed due the presence of SO, compounds, which causes corrosion and can damage power plant components. Therefore, either expensive acid resistant materials should be used, or a redesign of the cycle is required to overcome this challenge. Different options were explored for each of the cycle types mentioned to help in the visualization and performance prediction of possible sour gas oxy-fuel power cycle configurations. A cost analysis of the proposed systems was also conducted in order to provide preliminary levelized cost of electricity estimates.

Coal contributes to almost forty percent of global power generation. As conventional coal-fired power generation technologies result in large CO2 emission, the pursuit for new technologies focuses on either reducing CO2 emission or that allows easier capture of the emitted CO2 from coal-fired power plants. Oxy-fuel fluidized bed (Oxy-FB) combustion is one such technology due to its ability to produce concentrated CO2 stream in the flue gas. This concentrated CO2 allows easier capture for subsequent transportation and storage. Other important benefits of this technology are the potential for using any type of fuel, and the ability to control SO2 and NOX emissions. Despite its perceived advantages over conventional technologies, very little is known about the applicability of Oxy-FB for brown coal. Brown coal accounts for 91% of Victoria's current electricity needs. Since Victoria has an estimated reserve of over 500 years of brown coal at the current consumption rate, successful application of Oxy-FB can potentially result in environment friendly power generation in Victoria. This first-ever study investigates the Oxy-FB combustion using Victorian brown coal in a combined experimental and modelling approach. The research involves designing and commissioning of a 10 kWth fluidized bed rig, carrying out experiments in laboratory scale and bench scale equipment, and performing thermodynamic and process modelling.Laboratory scale experiments using single char particle were conducted to investigate the combustion characteristics of individual and large char particle under Oxy-FB conditions. Particle temperature was observed to be higher compared to bed temperature. Up to 48°C difference was noticed between the char particle temperature and the bed temperature using 15% (v/v) steam in oxy-fuel combustion atmosphere. The temperature of the char particle during Oxy-FB combustion has practical implication for agglomeration.The bench scale experiments were carried out to evaluate combustion efficiency, agglomeration characteristics, sulphation characteristics, carbonation characteristics, NOX (NO, NO2 and N2O) emission, SOX (SO2 and SO3) emission, and trace elements (Hg, Se, As and Cr) emissions during Oxy-FB combustion of Victorian brown coal. A high level of CO2 concentration (90-94% in dry flue gas), over 99% combustion efficiency and no bed agglomeration under oxy-fuel combustion conditions including those with the addition of steam at temperatures between 800°C and 900°C. Moreover, the measured NOX and SOX concentration levels in the flue gas are within the permissible limits for coal-fired power plants in Victoria. This implies that additional NOX and SOX removal systems may not be required with Oxy-FB combustion of Victorian brown coal. The gaseous mercury concentrations, however, are considerably higher under oxy-fuel combustion compared to air combustion suggesting that mercury removal system may be required to avoid corrosion in the CO2 separation units if CO2 capture and transportation is intended. These conventional pollutants and trace elements emission characteristics are of great importance for the design of the gas cleaning systems for CO2 capture and storage (CCS) purposes. Furthermore, these results also provide information for selecting the optimum operating condition.Thermodynamic equilibrium modelling was carried out to predict the compounds formed during the combustion of Victorian brown coal under different Oxy-FB combustion conditions. It was predicted that the amount of toxic gaseous Cr6+ species was greater for oxy-fuel combustion than for air combustion. The distribution of toxic Se4+ species, however, remained almost the same in both combustion conditions within the typical temperature range for Oxy-FB combustion (800 - 950°C). A process model on Oxy-FB combustion using Aspen Plus was also developed to predict combustion performance of any coal during Oxy-FB. It was observed that the concentrations of CO and SO2 were higher in the lower dense region of the bed. These levels, however, dropped significantly with the introduction of secondary oxygen. The simulation results were consistent with the experimental data. Overall, this thesis has identified several important issues, for the first time, on Oxy-FB combustion using brown coal. The information generated is useful for academics, industry and policy makers. Future research on Oxy-FB combustion can use the findings of this study while developing Oxy-FB combustion for brown coals.

Oxy-fuel combustion of sour gas, a mixture of natural gas (primarily methane (CH 4)), carbon dioxide (CO 2), and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), could enable the utilization of large natural gas resources, especially when combined with enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Chemical kinetic modeling can help to assess the potential of this approach. In this thesis, a detailed chemical reaction mechanism for oxy-fuel combustion of sour gas has been developed and applied for studying the combustion behavior of sour gas and the design of power cycles with EOR. The reaction mechanism was constructed by combining mechanisms for the oxidation of CH4 and H2S and optimizing the sulfur sub-mechanism. The optimized mechanism was validated against experimental data for oxy-fuel combustion of CH4, oxidation of H2S, and interaction between carbon and sulfur species. Improved overall performance was achieved through the optimization and all important trends were captured in the modeling results. Calculations with the optimized mechanism suggest that increasing H2 S content in the fuel tends to improve flame stability through a lower ignition delay time. Water diluted oxy-fuel combustion leads to higher burning velocities at elevated pressures than CO 2 dilution or air combustion, which also facilitates flame stabilization. In a mixed CH4 and H2S flame, H25 is oxidized completely as CH4 is converted to carbon monoxide (CO). During CO burnout, some highly corrosive sulfur trioxide (SO3) is formed. Quenching of SO 3 formation in the combustor can only be achieved at the expense of higher CO emissions. The modeling of a gas turbine cycle showed that oxy-fuel combustion leads to SO 3 concentrations that are one to two orders of magnitude lower than in air combustion and will thus suffer much less from the associated corrosion problems. Slightly fuel-rich operation is most promising for achieving the low CO and oxygen (02) concentrations required for EOR while further minimizing SO 3. Carbon dioxide dilution is better for achiving low 02 in the EOR stream while H20 gives the better combustion efficiency.
