Book Description :

Our Genes, Our Choices: How Genotype and Gene Interactions Affect Behavior - First Prize winner of the 2013 BMA Medical Book Award for Basic and Clinical Sciences - explains how the complexity of human behavior, including concepts of free will, derives from a relatively small number of genes, which direct neurodevelopmental sequence. Are people free to make choices, or do genes determine behavior? Paradoxically, the answer to both questions is "yes," because of neurogenetic individuality, a new theory with profound implications. Author David Goldman uses judicial, political, medical, and ethical examples to illustrate that this lifelong process is guided by individual genotype, molecular and physiologic principles, as well as by randomness and environmental exposures, a combination of factors that we choose and do not choose. Written in an authoritative yet accessible style, the book includes practical descriptions of the function of DNA, discusses the scientific and historical bases of genethics, and introduces topics of epigenetics and the predictive power of behavioral genetics. First Prize winner of the 2013 BMA Medical Book Award for Basic and Clinical Sciences Poses and resolves challenges to moral responsibility raised by modern genetics and neuroscience Analyzes the neurogenetic origins of human behavior and free will Written by one of the world's most influential neurogeneticists, founder of the Laboratory of Neurogenetics at the National Institutes of Health

Consider Our Genes Our Foods Our Choice your handheld audit of Food and Nutrition 101, a course that distills current research on the effects of food nutrients on gene expression and health by upkeep of your second genome and second brain-the enteric nervous system. It gives the power of knowledge: how foods and right lifestyle make and shape our body, mind, and behavior. The book provides extraordinary wealth of information on basic nutrients that feed our genes, that help us control diet and reduce weight, and that preserve our health and postpone senescence and death. This book is a great tale of symbiotic human beings whose existence depends on oxygen they breathe, the water they drink, the foods they eat, and the bacteria they have in their gut. In truth humans are creatures of sun, thriving under its energy and its gift of oxygen through plant life. The bacteria come from raw or fermented foods they eat. Its main lesson: human beings must supplement their daily gene expression and methylation diet with a lifestyle rich in exercise, meditation, yoga, sleep, belief, and planned social interactivity. They should protect and preserve their second brain-the enteric nervous system and the second genome-the bacteria in their gut.

Book Description :

This is a dynamic book that successfully combines global and local thinking with regard to an emerging technology that will contribute to the expansion of proteomics and pharmacogenomics, the science of tailored healthcare and treatments. Genetic testing and screening will change the way people understand health, diagnostic knowledge, illness but also crime, databases and private information, paternity, and self-knowledge. In addition to giving individuals the opportunity to think differently about their well-being, it installs a new taxonomy in terms of illness, because its probabilistic effects will introduce a new narrative in the health discourse of 21st century society. While in the past people could be classified as being healthy or sick, now, through genetic testing and screening, adults can be classified as being healthy, predisposed to an illness, probably at risk, at risk, or carriers of certain risks. The effects of this taxonomy do not remain confined to the individual who is tested but extends to an entire family, as genetic knowledge is family knowledge. But the technology of genetic testing and screening installs a second dramatic register in the prenatal phase when cells and embryos are tested and subsequently altered in order to hit targets of perfection. However, this technology can also be seen as a strategy for the acquisition of new knowledge about oneself, as it instigates a different attitude towards ourselves in a scenario in which the notion of life as a singular noun is seriously questioned by cultural practices that make it necessary to speak of forms of life. The complexity of the Self resulting from this epistemological shift evoke the ancient Greco-roman practices of the care of the self leading to self-knowledge. Genetic testing and screening could therefore be understood as a form of self-quest, and attempt to discover what we are beyond our wishes and desires - beyond what we would like to be.

Book Description :

Life is a gift that includes powers to be used and celebrated, but that doesn't necessarily justify the use of every new power that comes along. A Christian Response to the New Genetics appeals to both secular and religious readers in the center of the great debate over our new genetic powers. These essays affirm many traditional Christian perspectives and virtues, while also introducing new insights. The authors explore a broad range of topics, including genetic testing, gene transfer, genetic manipulation, patenting, health insurance, and the moral status of embryos. They conclude it is naïve to either outright reject or wholeheartedly embrace the new genetic powers. In fact, sometimes the best we can expect is to learn how to cope with moral uncertainty. A Christian Response to the New Genetics originated with initiatives of the Episcopal Church, but the book is neither an official statement of Episcopal theological ethics nor a parochial lamentation.

Book Description :

The authors explore the question of whether our sexual orientation is inherited or if it is a product of our upbringing and/or environment. Many people think gays are born that way, and few understand enough about genetics and human biology to mount a thorough defense of the facts. My Genes Made Me Do It explains the role of genetics and biology in human behavior with a particular, though not exclusive, emphasis on homosexuality. Conventional scientific method and research findings are brought together in a fresh, original way to argue that no human behaviors are biologically determined.
