Book Description :

Musculoskeletal diseases are rapidly becoming a major health concern. The incidence of osteoarthritis, the most common arthritic disorder, is increasing steadily due to the graying of the world population. This disease is responsible of human life, a time in for significant morbidity, particularly in the second half which the quality of life is of primary importance. The aim of this publication is to bring to physicians and scientists a comprehensive overview of the field, from molecules to men. The direct costs related to osteoarthritis have been increasing steadily over the years and will soon be comparable to those of other major illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases. This, of course, does not take into account all of the other costs related to the disease which often cannot be simply calculated in dollars and cents. There has been a great deal of renewed interest in osteoarthritis in the last few decades. This has been brought on by the need to improve our knowledge of all aspects of the disease, especially with regard to its etiopathogenesis and treatment. The most recent findings and developments on the structural, bio chemical, biomechanical and molecular changes observed in clinical and ex perimental osteoarthritis are presented in this book.

Book Description :

Multimodal Management of Canine Osteoarthritis, Second Edition takes an evidence-based approach to the canine patient with osteoarthritis, pursuing the objective of the best available medicine by a variety of means: multiple drugs, agents, adjuncts and delivery methods. Appreciating that surgical intervention may initially be required, particularly for stabilizing a joint, the major focus in this work is the conservative management of osteoarthritis. A clear and visual approach is taken with the overlapping of two three-pointed triangles of management: medical and non-medical. The completely updated new edition offers a major new chapter on Regenerative Medicine in collaboration with Drs Sherman Canapp and Brittany Jean Carr. It is recommended for any small animal veterinary practitioner, as well as researchers and students of the RCVS CertAVP.

Book Description :

This volume reviews the state-of-the-art in osteoarthritis. The pathogenetic roles of mechanical, systemic and inflammatory factors and the importance of neurogenic factors in pain management and in the causes of disease are considered. Of particular value is the review of the implications of pathogenetic mechanisms in future modes of management. The concept of "activated arthrosis" is given special attention. Finally, controversial issues and new areas for investigation are discussed. The book will help the clinician and the investigator consider the importance of addressing different phases and subtypes of osteoarthritis in planning treatment.

Book Description :

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of musculoskeletal disability, affecting five million people in Britain. By far the majority of cases are managed in the community. A considerable proportion of patients self-medicate, while others are treated by a GP and the primary health care team. This book provides an overview of the condition, its causes and natural history. Diagnosis of osteoarthritis is also explained including descriptions of joint examination, monitoring of progression and assessment of disability. The book advocates a practical approach to osteoarthritis care, the mainstay of which is patient education and symptom management. It provides advice on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management, the use of exercise, physiotherapy and weight loss where necessary. Topics discsussed also include: informing the patient of the disease and its prognosis; ways in which patients can adapt their home and their lifestyle to work within their physical capabilities; and surgery options.

Book Description :

Osteoarthritis is the most common joint pathology which primarily affects the older population. The disease is characterized by unique pathological changes in some synovial joints, predominantly affecting the articular cartilage, but also entire joints, including the synovial tissue and subchondral bone. The remarkable growth of research on normal and abnormal biology of tissues in the articulating joint, including the application of novel molecular biological approaches and new imaging techniques, is reflected in this volume. It describes the current state of knowledge and helps to further understand the etiopathology of osteoarthritis, hopefully leading to early detection of the disease and novel treatment modalities. The volume contains contributions and discussions from a select group of investigators, all experts in this field, who met at the conference "The Many Faces of Osteoarthritis", held in June 2001 at Lake Tahoe, to acknowledge Klaus E. Kuettner and his contributions to osteoarthritis...

This book attempts to determine the association between erythrocyte sedimentation rate and detection of serum enzymatic profile, especially Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 and Matrix Metalloproteinase-13 in patients with Knee Osteoarthritis and controls. The efforts of the book have been made to identify the prevalence of Knee Osteoarthritis was highest in the age group of 60-65 irrespective of the gender. At the viewpoint, clinical pattern and biochemical markers, evidence that, different population, lifestyle and day to day activities also matters for most causes of cartilage degradation in Knee joints. WOMAC scores, results reveal that, the majority of the patients with Knee Osteoarthritis were having moderate in Pain, Stiffness and Physical functions, it directly associated with their pain of knee while doing different activities. Further, detection of serum enzymes of Matrix Metalloproteinases of MMP-3 and MMP-13 in patients with Knee Osteoarthritis and control group results shows that, Matrix Metalloproteinases have important roles in cartilage matrix degradation in Knee joints. This book grants readers exclusive insight into advancements in the field of Knee Osteoarthritis and it will be useful for policy makers, medical practitioner’s especially orthopaedic doctors, research community and drugs producers.
