For service providers, extending the Software Defined Network (SDN) concept from packet switching in Layers 2 and 3 to circuit switching in transport layers is a promising approach to meet high burstiness and high bandwidth requirements. A multi-layer controller that can provide automated controller-based restoration and protection, even for unprotected links in a multi-administrative domain, would be a significant improvement. It would allow service providers to ensure provision of guaranteed Service Level Agreement (SLA) maintenance, with optimal bandwidth usage, high availability and reduced errors. In this thesis, we propose a Software Defined Survivable Optical Interconnect (SDSOI) architecture for Data Centers (DC). This unique architecture will address service providers' challenges related to bandwidth management, and optimize the time required while interconnecting numerous DCs to meet the high SLA demands. The architecture is built according to the overlay SDN concept, and categorizes the application layers into online, offline and third party applications. The offline application performs the routine DC tasks, while the online application manages various dynamic DC demands. An SDSOI driven Data Center Optical Interconnect (DCOI) can handle the extensive, high quality, on-demand access to the contents. The feasibility of SDSOI is verified and demonstrated using Open Network Operating System (ONOS) as the SDN controller, Mininet as the network emulator and Optical Transport Network (OTN) as the optical framework. Our work primarily focusses on the creation of business applications in the SDSOI model, and the northbound protocols or interfaces used by the applications to interact with the controller. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed SDSOI architecture and its business applications, we simulated 'Day Night Scheduling', an application that combines characteristics of offline and online applications. Its primary function is to package and schedule varying DC bandwidths to service providers and optimize bandwidth usage at different times of day, along with the survivability of the interconnects.

This dissertation provides the first systematic analysis of the dynamic energy efficiency of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for optical interconnects, a key technology to address the pressing ecological and economic issues of the exponentially growing energy consumption in data centers. Energy-efficient data communication is one of the most important fields in “Green Photonics” enabling higher bit rates at significantly reduced energy consumption per bit. In this thesis the static and dynamic properties of GaAs-based oxide-confined VCSELs emitting at 850 nm and 980 nm are analyzed and general rules for achieving energy-efficient data transmission using VCSELs at any wavelength are derived. These rules are verified in data transmission experiments leading to record energy-efficient data transmission across a wide range of multimode optical fiber distances and at high temperatures up to 85°C. Important trade-offs between energy efficiency, temperature stability, modulation bandwidth, low current-density operation and other VCSEL properties are revealed and discussed.

Internet traffic is increasing exponentially with the continued growth of online streaming, cloud computing, and social media services. This increases demand on data centers that must handle the transmission, routing, and storage of the data. As bandwidth is scaled up, more power efficient systems are required to reduce cost and power consumption, while maintaining thermal requirements. Gigabit connections between the labyrinth of network servers are traditionally made of copper, but link distances are typically limited to ten meters, and the required electronic equalizations add to the power budget. To achieve high bitrates with low energy per bit, optical interconnects are displacing copper, at increasingly short distances. This trend will continue as optical transceiver costs fall and the devices within become more energy efficient. A category of optoelectronic devices that apply resonant-cavities are uniquely suited to address optical interconnect improvements. The resonant-cavity enhances the device function, by increasing its sensitivity. In this dissertation two such devices are investigated for application in high speed, energy efficient, short reach optical interconnects for data centers. The first is the microring resonator, which is a planar photonic circuit capable of multiple functions such as optical switching and intensity modulation. An optical switching fabric based on microrings is designed and optical data transmission is simulated. Operated as a modulator, the microring is analyzed theoretically to develop a novel small-signal model that agrees with experimental results, and accurately predicts dynamic power dissipation. The second device is a novel GaAs-based thyristor photodetector. Operated with surface illumination, the epitaxial structure of the device is compatible with VCSEL integration. The for the fabricated device are presented with an analysis of internal current gain, inherent to the thyristor operation. Experimental findings are applied to the development of an equivalent circuit model, in order to derive the rise time of the detector. The thyristor detector shows promising results in that high sensitivity is achieved along with a predicted rise time less than 25 ps.
