Book Description :

The operational amplifier ("op amp") is the most versatile and widely used type of analog IC, used in audio and voltage amplifiers, signal conditioners, signal converters, oscillators, and analog computing systems. Almost every electronic device uses at least one op amp. This book is Texas Instruments' complete professional-level tutorial and reference to operational amplifier theory and applications. Among the topics covered are basic op amp physics (including reviews of current and voltage division, Thevenin's theorem, and transistor models), idealized op amp operation and configuration, feedback theory and methods, single and dual supply operation, understanding op amp parameters, minimizing noise in op amp circuits, and practical applications such as instrumentation amplifiers, signal conditioning, oscillators, active filters, load and level conversions, and analog computing. There is also extensive coverage of circuit construction techniques, including circuit board design, grounding, input and output isolation, using decoupling capacitors, and frequency characteristics of passive components. The material in this book is applicable to all op amp ICs from all manufacturers, not just TI. Unlike textbook treatments of op amp theory that tend to focus on idealized op amp models and configuration, this title uses idealized models only when necessary to explain op amp theory. The bulk of this book is on real-world op amps and their applications; considerations such as thermal effects, circuit noise, circuit buffering, selection of appropriate op amps for a given application, and unexpected effects in passive components are all discussed in detail. *Published in conjunction with Texas Instruments *A single volume, professional-level guide to op amp theory and applications *Covers circuit board layout techniques for manufacturing op amp circuits.

Book Description :

For low frequency applications in the field of biomedical engineering, the reduction of dynamic range due to low frequency flicker noise and DC offset of the amplifier becomes increasingly significant in low voltage CMOS technology. For example, the bandwidth of neural signals falls in the frequency range where flicker noise is dominant. The objective of this thesis is to design a low noise instrumentation amplifier to eliminate the inherent flicker noise in CMOS devices and achieve a low residual DC offset by using the technique of chopper stabilization. Conventional chopper stabilized amplifiers require a wideband amplifier and an additional low pass filter to eliminate the modulation noise. By using a two stage amplifier with a chopped wideband gain stage and a Miller compensation stage which also acts as a low pass filter, the DC offset and flicker noise of the amplifier can be minimized. Simulations show that chopping essentially removes most of the flicker noise in the baseband leaving behind only the wideband thermal noise. The proposed amplifier was designed in AMI 0.5 um CMOS technology. The amplifier, simulated with resistive feedback, had a closed loop gain of 54 dB and a closed loop -3 dB bandwidth of 5.34 kHz. The amplifier, simulated with capacitive feedback, had a closed loop gain of 40 dB and a closed loop -3 dB bandwidth of 25.4 kHz. With a chopping frequency of 500 kHz, chopper stabilization improved the amplifier signal to noise ratio by 10 dB without increasing power consumption or layout area.

Book Description :

This complete text on op-amp use and design discusses topics essential to the practicing engineer that are not covered in comparable texts, including error budget analysis, noise analysis, active filters, and op-amps with multiple poles. The text can be used as a supplement in many electronics courses. It has a practical emphasis and coverage of SPICE computer modeling, satisfying the latest ABET recommendations for more design emphasis in EE courses. It uses commercially available op-amps rather than theoretical models in examples and problems to familiarize students with actual devices. It also provides unusually extensive coverage of active filters, one of the most significant current uses of op-amps--and includes data sheets for the most widely used op-amps.

No matter where you are on the learning curve, this one-stop sourcebook delivers the kind of previously hard-to-find practical information you'll appreciate - and the wide range of application circuit alternatives you need - to optimize the noise, offset, bandwidth, and stability performance of photodiode amplifiers. Featuring the insights and accumulated knowledge that could only come from the world's number one authority on the subject, this is no scholarly tome but a hands-on reference - one that provides you with generalized circuit solutions that quickly adapt to specific design and application requirements. Inside, you'll find clear, complete, and largely stand-alone discussions of such topics as how the op amp current-to-voltage converter serves as the basic photodiode amplifier; the role of photodiode capacitance in an amplifier's AC response, along with design equations for optimum phase compensation; noise analysis, identification, and reduction; and wideband, high-gain, and position-sensing photodiode amplifiers. In all, this information-packed guide is without question the photodiode "bible" for anyone dealing with electronic design issues.

Book Description :

Many interesting design trends are shown by the six papers on operational amplifiers (Op Amps). Firstly. there is the line of stand-alone Op Amps using a bipolar IC technology which combines high-frequency and high voltage. This line is represented in papers by Bill Gross and Derek Bowers. Bill Gross shows an improved high-frequency compensation technique of a high quality three stage Op Amp. Derek Bowers improves the gain and frequency behaviour of the stages of a two-stage Op Amp. Both papers also present trends in current-mode feedback Op Amps. Low-voltage bipolar Op Amp design is presented by leroen Fonderie. He shows how multipath nested Miller compensation can be applied to turn rail-to-rail input and output stages into high quality low-voltage Op Amps. Two papers on CMOS Op Amps by Michael Steyaert and Klaas Bult show how high speed and high gain VLSI building blocks can be realised. Without departing from a single-stage OT A structure with a folded cascode output, a thorough high frequency design technique and a gain-boosting technique contributed to the high-speed and the high-gain achieved with these Op Amps. . Finally. Rinaldo Castello shows us how to provide output power with CMOS buffer amplifiers. The combination of class A and AB stages in a multipath nested Miller structure provides the required linearity and bandwidth.

Book Description :

"In this fifth edition, we not only have kept the standard 741 op amp but also have shown many circuits with newer, readily available op amps because these have largely overcome the dc and ac limitations of the older types. We preserved or objective of simplifying the process of learning about applications involving signal conditioning, signal generation, filters, instrumentation, and control circuits. But we have oriented this fifth edition to reflect the evolution of analog circuits into those applications whose purpose is to condition signals from transducers or other sources into form suitable for presentation to a microcontroller or computer. In addition, we have added examples of circuit simulation using PSpice throughout this edition."--Introduction.
