Book Description :

Providers and consumers of mental health services are increasingly making use of the internet to gather information, consult, and participate in psychotherapy. This Handbook gives practical insight into how professionals can translate their practice to an online medium. Divided into four sections, section one provides an overview of how the internet has become an integral part of people's lives, and the research to date on the use and effectiveness of counseling online, as well as idiosyncrasies of online behavior and communication. Section two discusses the "practical" aspects of counseling online, including technological issues, ethical and legal issues, and business issues. Section three focuses on performing psychotherapy online, including online treatment strategies and skills, working with online groups, online testing and assessment, and international and multicultural issues in online counseling. The last section discusses the future of online counseling. The Handbook is intended for those professionals interested in the burgeoning telehealth movement and to those practicing therapists looking for ways to expand their practices online and/or to help round out treatment to specific patients who might benefit from online therapy in addition to traditional delivery. * Foreword by Morgan Sammons and Patrick DeLeon, past president of the American Psychological Association * The first comprehensive textbook designed to give clinicians and mental health students everything they need to understand and start providing mental health services via the Internet * Each chapter includes study questions and key terms, making it ideal for use in graduate or continuing education settings * Includes clear and comprehensive chapters on research and technology related to online counseling * Contributors include past, present, and elected presidents of the International Society for Mental Health Online (ISMHO), the Inernet's leading resource for professionals interested in online counseling and other methods of delivering mental health services via the Internet

'A very practical text that provides professionals new to this arena with a good introduction to what they can expect to encounter in online work. The book contains numerous thought-provoking examples and exercises for those contemplating work in virtual arenas' - Terry Hanley, Lecturer in Counselling, University of Manchester `It's tempting to think that face-to-face experience translates straightforwardly to online work. But it doesn't. Jane Evans shows how many different aspects there are to counselling on-line... My advice would be, don't attempt it until you have worked through this book' - Professor Michael Jacobs, author of Psychodynamic Counselling in Action Counsellors - and other professionals who provide emotional support and guidance - are increasingly working online. The difference between online and face-to-face interaction with clients is vast and practitioners need to equip themselves with specialist knowledge and skills to ensure that they are being effective. Online Counselling and Guidance Skills is the first book to deal with the practicalities of this mode of working. It looks at how practitioners need to adapt their basic counselling skills to the online environment and guides them through the process of setting up, defining and maintaining a working relationship with a client within professional, ethical and legal boundaries. Case studies and extracts from online sessions show how the skills are put into practice, while practical exercises and points for further consideration help readers to develop their own knowledge and skills. Until now, books and articles have generally focused on the therapeutic work done by counsellors online. However, this book addresses people who use counselling skills in a wide range of contexts; including counselling, education, mental health, social care and careers guidance.

Book Description :

Using a novel approach to consider the available literature and research, this book focuses on the psychology of social media based on the assumption that the experience of being in a social media has an impact on both our identity and social relationships. In order to ‘be online’, an individual has to create an online presence – they have to share information about themselves online. This online self is presented in different ways, with diverse goals and aims in order to engage in different social media activities and to achieve desired outcomes. Whilst this may not be a real physical presence, that physicality is becoming increasingly replicated through photos, video, and ever-evolving ways of defining and describing the self online. Moreover, individuals are using both PC-based and mobile-based social media as well as increasingly making use of photo and video editing tools to carefully craft and manipulate their online self. This book therefore explores current debates in Cyberpsychology, drawing on the most up-to-date theories and research to explore four main aspects of the social media experience (communication, identity, presence and relationships). In doing so, it considers the interplay of different areas of psychological research with current technological and security insight into how individuals create, manipulate and maintain their online identity and relationships. The social media are therefore at the core of every chapter, with the common thread throughout being the very unique approach to considering diverse and varied online behaviours that may not have been thus far considered from this perspective. It covers a broad range of both positive and negative behaviours that have now become integrated into the daily lives of many westernised country’s Internet users, giving it an appeal to both scholarly and industry readers alike.

Book Description :

Technical Report from the year 2008 in the subject Computer Science - Software, grade: Merit, London Metropolitan University, course: Computing Information Systems, language: English, abstract: This web based booking and counseling project was initially conceived for Dilemma Counseling Services as a web system, offering counseling to masses (refer to project proposal). The idea then was to have an online portal where clients can post problems and counselors respond to them. However the core issue was, whether it would be done for free at the expense of Dilemma Counseling time and finances. But as the idea of the web based counseling system was brainstormed by top management, new requirements arose. To maximize potential of the web based system proposed, the management realized their booking system was a mess and resulted in data duplication and clashing bookings. The ineffectual booking system then in place brought constant complaints from clients whose counseling sessions clashed. The Dilemma Staff contracted me to offer expertise on if counseling and booking can be incorporated into a web based system that is financially viable this was possible. So I adopted a Unified Software Development Process (USDP) because after interviewing the various staff I was not satisfied with the feedback. Thus I choose USDP as the software development method since it allows new requirements to be factored at any project stage. Sure enough as the software development process progressed new requirements arose like online counseling system, processing payments made and assigning username and passwords for clients who pay but prefer online counseling as opposed to face to face counseling. The system allows staff to book clients remotely online via secure log in. The clients counseled can have their progress tracked easily via the secure counseling chat system. I stuck to the USDP process and working on each workflow and resultant artifacts like Unified Modeling Language diagrams to ensure the project was well modeled to be realized in construction and transition phases.
