Book Description :

A number of structures contribute to tear production and maintenance, including the tear system, the lids and the orbit. The ocular surface itself is also a part of the system, including the cornea and conjunctiva. This makes for a very complex situation that can easily lead to changes in tear film and the ocular surface that are called "dry eye." Here a team of experts carefully examine how and when surgery is indicated, addressing normal tear film, normal anatomy (including immunological interactions), classification and diagnosis, anti-inflammatory and immnunosup-pressive concepts, correction and drainage techniques, surgery of the conjunctiva and cornea, keratoprosthesis surgery, botulism toxin injections, mucous membrane grafting, and salivary gland transplantation along with other treatments. The collection closed with a set of scientific studies. The color and monochrome clinical photographs and line illustrations are especially well-chosen and informative.

Book Description :

During the past two decades, a significant international research effort has been di rected toward understanding the composition and regulation of the preocular tear film. This effort has been motivated by the recognition that the tear film plays an essential role in maintaining corneal and conjunctival integrity, protecting against microbial challenge, and preserving visual acuity. In addition, research has been stimulated by the knowledge that alteration or deficiency of the tear film, which occurs in countless individuals throughout the world, may lead to desiccation of the ocular surface, ulceration and perfo ration of the cornea, an increased incidence of infectious disease, and, potentially, pro nounced visual disability and blindness. To promote further progress in this field of vision research, the Second International Conference on the Lacrimal Gland, Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes: Basic Science and Clinical Relevance was held at the Southampton Princess Resort in Bermuda November 16-19, 1996. This conference was organized and directed by David A. Sullivan, Ph. D. , codirected by Darlene A. Dartt, Ph. D. , and Michele A. Meneray, Ph. D. , and sponsored by the Schepens Eye Research Institute (Boston, MA), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The meeting was designed to assess critically the current knowledge and "state of the art" research on the structure and function of lacrimal tissue, tears, and the ocular sur face in both health and disease.

Here is the ultimate guide to managing the most frequently encountered problem in the eye patient--dry eye disease. Dry Eye Disease: The Clinician's Guide to Management provides the latest diagnostic techniques, new approaches for classifying patients, and state-of-the-art, evidence-based medical and surgical treatments. The book opens with a review of the epidemiology and the multifactorial etiologies of dry eye disease. The authors guide the reader through taking a thorough patient history, conducting the diagnostic examination, and using clinical tests to make a confident evaluation of the severity of the disease. In their discussion of both medical and surgical techniques for management, the authors describe common treatments, such as punctal plugs, lid treatment, artificial tears, as well as innovative treatments including autologous serum drops, stem cell transplantation, and more. Highlights: Contributions from such internationally known experts as Shigeru Kinoshita, M. Reza Dana, Maurizio Rolando, Kazuo Tsubota, Kelly Nichols, Janine Smith, J. Daniel Nelson, Jay S. Pepose, Mark J. Mannis, Friedrich E. Kruse, Teruo Nishida, and others Thorough discussion of new and emerging diagnostic tests, including tear osmolarity, impression cytology, corneal permeability, and visual function, enables readers to expand and sharpen their techniques A bullet-point list of key points at the beginning of each chapter is ideal for rapidly reviewing important concepts Numerous tables organize the results of clinical surveys of common symptoms and factors associated with dry eye disease An extensive list of references, as well as a chapter covering online resources, helps the reader keep abreast of the newest research This is a timely reference for all ophthalmologists, optometrists, and trainees in these specialties. Book Description :

This book has been conceived to aid eye care practitioners such as ophthalmologists and optometrists as well as other eye care or research professionals such as biologists, biochemists and medical doctors interested in the Ocular Surface. This text is divided into four main sections. The first section is dedicated towards the anatomy and physiology of the ocular surface (defining ocular surface concept, tear film structure, corneal and conjunctival anatomy, etc.). The second section covers the most common ocular surface disorders (dry eye, anterior and posterior blepharitis, keratitis, ocular allergy, cicatricial conjunctivitis, and the ocular surface alterations related with Glaucoma treatment). The third section delineates the therapeutic care of these disorders, including topical, systemic and surgical treatment options and the fourth section addresses the relationship of the ocular surface and contact lenswear (describing the indications for contact lenses wear, their complications and managing the adverse effects related with contact lens-wear).
