Nanoscience is of central importance in the physical and biological sciences and is now pervasive in technology. However nanomagnetism has a special role to play as magnetic properties depend uniquely on both dimensionality and lengthscales. Nanomagnetism is already central to data storage, sensor and device technologies but is increasingly being used in the life sciences and medicine. This volume aims to introduce scientists, computer scientists, engineers and technologists from diverse fields to this fascinating and technologically important new branch of nanoscience. The volume should appeal to both the interested general reader but also to the researcher wishing to obtain an overview of this fast moving field. The contributions come from acknowledged leaders in the field who each give authoritative accounts of key fundamental aspects of nanomagnetism to which they have themselves made a major contribution. After a brief introduction by the editors, Wu first surveys the fundamental properties of magnetic nanostructures. The interlayer exchange interactions within magnetic multilayer structures is next discussed by Stiles. Camley then discusses the static, dynamic and thermal properties of magnetic multilayers and nanostructures, followed by an account of the phenomenon of exchange anisotropy by Berkowitz and Kodama. This latter phenomenon is widely in current read head devices for example. The transport properties of nanostructures also are spectacular, and again underpin computer technology, as we see from the discussion of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) presented by Fert and his colleagues. Beyond GMR and TMR we look to the field of spintronics where new electronic devices are envisioned and for which quantum computing may depend as discussed in the chapter by Flatte and Jonker. The area of anisotropic magnetotransport in magnetic superlattices remains controversial and intensely investigated by theorists and experimentalists, as demonstrated in Symposium Q on Magnetoelectronics-Novel Magnetic Phenomena in Nanostructures. The main issues that were highlighted are the importance of mean free path, the connection between structure and GMR, and whether GMR originates from the bulk or interface in the superlattice, especially in experiments in which the current flows perpendicular to the interfaces. B.J. Hickey (Leeds Univ.) said, based on experiments in Permalloy-containing superlattices, that the mean free path is crucial in determining the GMR. Theoretical work (P. Weinberger, Univ. of Vienna) seems to show that in the Fe/Cr interface, scattering originates in the interface in agreement with experimental claims (J. Santamaria, Univ. of Madrid, Spain). The magnetic proximity effect, while an old subject, has received renewed attention from experimentalists and theorists who are principally motivated by the. developments in spintronics. M. Kiwi (Catholic Univ., Chile) summarized the long history of this field. Generally, it is accepted and found experimentally (A. Hoffmann, ANL) that the magnetic proximity effect is small and confined to a very short distance close to the interface. A novel type of proximity effect was predicted theoretically (LJ. Sham, UCSD) in which electrons in a semiconductor become polarized if reflected from an interface with a magnetic material.

The manipulation of matter at the atomic scales facilitates understanding of the fundamental properties of magnetism and opens the possibility of designing systems with novel magnetic properties with limitless industrial applications. This thesis seeks to identify nano-scale magnetic coupling mechanisms in nanostructures assemblies and to better understand different magnetic phases and the associated transitions. This was accomplished through the study of three prototype systems: Fe nanodots of controlled size and density on single crystal substrates of nonmagnetic metals, fractal -- dimensional Fe on Cu(111), and FeGe nanowires on Ge(111). The first system shows the presence of a novel magnetic coupling in the nanodot arrays through the surface substrate, allowing the design of a Fe nanodot/Cu multilayer system with tunable magnetism in bulk and on surface. The second system shows a magnetic phase transition with unusual interface magnetism. The third shows how magnetic nature of FeGe (antiferromagnetic) can be shifted in nanostructures to ferromagnet under compressive strain. In all the topics, a new magnetic characteristic has been observed and discussed in details. The novel methods used to fabricate and control nanostructures will have a great impact in studying the emerging physical phenomena of magnetic materials in reduced dimensionality.

The papers in this volume are drawn from Symposium Q, "Magnetoelectronics-Novel Magnetic Phenomena in Nanostructures," and Symposium R, "Advanced Characterization of Artificially Structured Magnetic Materials," which were held December 1-5 at the 2002 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.
