Book Description :

Following in the lineage of Adsorption by Carbons (Bottani & Tascon, 2008), this work explores current research within contemporary novel carbon adsorbents. Both basic and applied aspects are discussed for this important class of materials. The first section of the book introduces physical adsorption and carbonaceous materials, and is followed by a section concerning the fundamentals of adsorption by carbons. This leads to development of a series of theoretical concepts that serve as an introduction to the following section in which adsorption is mainly envisaged as a tool to characterize the porous texture and surface chemistry of carbons. Particular attention is paid to novel nanocarbons, and the electrochemistry of adsorption by carbons is also addressed. Finally, several important technological applications of gas and liquid adsorption by carbons in areas such as environmental protection and energy storage constitute the last section of the book. Encompasses fundamental science of adsorption by carbons, in one location, supporting current R&D without extensive literature review Describes adsorption as it is currently applied to major novel types of carbon materials, including carbon gels, carbide-derived carbons, zeolite-templated carbvons, hydrothermal carbons, carbon nanohorns and graphene Specific discussion of fuel storage, environmental remediation and biomedical applications, of contemporary interest to many surface chemists and applications-focused researchers

Book Description :

Finally, an electrical swing adsorption test setup was designed and constructed, and a large monolith sample was functionalised to investigate the theorised benefit of functionalisation to improve ESA as a potential CO2 capture process. Unfortunately the monolith broke apart because of stress fractures that had formed due to the synthesis conditions. Therefore, the focus of the ESA investigation was on improving the understanding of the four steps of the ESA CO2 capture cycle, as well as improving the purity and recovery of the captured CO2 by making modifications to the experimental conditions of the ESA cycle. One aspect of this investigation focused on the feasibility of combining electrical stimulation and vacuum to improve the recovery of CO2. Significant improvements in recovery, as well as reduced energy requirements and shorter cycle times, were observed where a small period of electrical stimulation was applied during CO2 recovery. Further research of some of the more promising approaches investigated, along with an investigation of the ESA CO2 cycle with a functionalised carbon monlith, may lead to a more precise and favourable estimation of the potential of ESA as a CO2 capture process.

Book Description :

Among various water and wastewater treatment technologies, the adsorption process is considered better because of lower cost, simple design and easy operation. Activated carbon (a universal adsorbent) is generally used for the removal of diverse types of pollutants from water and wastewater. Research is now being directed towards the modification of carbon surfaces to enhance its adsorption potential towards specific pollutants. However, widespread use of commercial activated carbon is sometimes restricted especially in developing or poor countries due to its higher costs. Attempts are therefore being made to develop inexpensive adsorbents utilizing abundant natural materials, agricultural and industrial waste materials. Use of waste materials as low-cost adsorbents is attractive due to their contribution in the reduction of costs for waste disposal, therefore contributing to environmental protection. This e-book explores knowledge on recent developments in adsorbents synthesis and their use in water pollution control. This handy reference work is intended for researchers and scientists actively engaged in the study of adsorption and the development and application of efficient adsorption technology for water treatment. This e-book covers a wide range of topics including modeling aspects of adsorption process and the applications of conventional and non-conventional adsorbents in water remediation emphasizing sorption mechanisms of different pollutants on the adsorbents.
