Over the years, optical fibers have dominated the landscape of communications. At the same time, these structures have been used in a variety of ways for nonlinear optical applications, including for example photonic crystal fibers, fiber amplifiers and multimode fibers. In this respect, optical fibers represent a good platform to study and discover linear and nonlinear phenomena, such as geometric parametric instabilities, which represent important processes that take place in systems having one or more parameters that vary periodically in time or space, and constitute an essential mechanism in supercontinuum generation in the normal dispersion regime in parabolic multimode fibers. In this work, we provide a rigorous analysis of geometric parametric instabilities in parabolic multimode fibers by taking into account dispersion effects to all orders and by considering self-focusing processes. This approach leads to results that are in good agreement with experimental observations of geometric parametric instabilities. In addition, we present a new method for generating self-similar pulses based on passive, normally dispersive multimode fibers that have an exponential taper profile. On the other hand, we theoretically analyzed and experimentally observed, for the first time in optics, Aharonov-Bohm suppression of light tunneling in a four-core twisted optical fiber, including an analytical solution for the equations of motion describing this system in the presence of nonlinearity. Finally, by taking advantage of the properties of non-Hermitian degeneracies we explore the prospect for an optical omni-polarizer based on a fiber loop system, where the output polarization state depends on the modulation applied to the intensity and phase of the corresponding polarization component.

"Nonlinear optical effects are very well studied in optical fibers. However, most of these studies are restricted to fibers that support one spatial mode. Multimode fibers can provide several new nonlinear pathways due to intermodal effects, which makes light propagation through them difficult to understand. But several proposed applications have led to a resurgence in efforts to determine how nonlinearity manifests in multimode fibers. This thesis deals with many different studies undertaken to understand a subset of this large variety of nonlinear effects that occur inside a multimode fiber. The first part of the thesis looks at two different manifestations of intermodal nonlinearity, spatiotemporal solitons and nonlinear spectral effects. The existence and interaction of solitons in multimode fibers is considered. Solitons, or a solitary wave packet that maintains its shape during propagation, is a commonly observed nonlinear artifact that has several applications in fiber optics. Intermodal interaction is added to the picture and the stability and formation of solitary wave packets in a multimode fiber are studied using numerical simulations. Simulations and theory are also used to understand how solitons propagating in different modes of a multimode fiber interact with each other owing to nonlinearity. Nonlinear optics has been successfully exploited to generate sources with novel spectral profiles, including a broad supercontinuum, frequency-combs etc. A combination of several nonlinear effects in the medium is usually responsible for tailoring the source spectrum. Numerical results are presented that show a novel spectral suppression phenomenon in multimode fibers. Nonlinear spectral broadening is demonstrated through experimental results, using a special photonic crystal fiber. The second part of this thesis explores the impact of random linear coupling between modes in a multimode or multicore fiber and how it affects nonlinear coupling. Random linear coupling can occur due to several imperfections in a real optical fiber and is important to consider when modeling systems that employ multimode fibers, like in the case of space division multiplexing communication systems. A comprehensive theoretical model is proposed that can be used to simulate the average nonlinear behavior with any amount of random linear coupling present in the system. Specific regimes of linear coupling are found to be more detrimental to optical communication systems. An experimental study to quantify linear coupling in a multicore fiber, and future work pertaining to it, are also described."--Pages ix-x.

This chapter starts by providing some statistics on traffic demand in optical networks and the capacity scaling over time of commercial optical communication systems. Next there is a brief review of the basic results of information theory. We then describe the stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (SNSE), the equation that governs nonlinear propagation in SMFs. This is followed by calculations of nonlinear capacity limit estimates for the SSMF, and advanced fibers with improved transmission characteristics are then presented along with an analytical formula of nonlinear capacity. We then introduce a set of coupled partial differential equations (PDEs) describing nonlinear propagation of polarization-division multiplexed (PDM) signals in SMFs along with nonlinear capacity estimates for these systems. This followed by a focus on multimode fibers (MMFs) and multicore fibers (MCFs). The rest of the chapter then focuses on nonlinear effects in MMFs and MCFs, with an emphasis on MMFs and FMFs. The chapter concludes by reporting experimental observations of two important effects involving nonlinear effects between spatial modes: inter-modal cross-phase modulation (IM-XPM) and inter-modal four-wave mixing (IM-FWM).
