Book Description :

The last decade has seen major advances in our understanding of the basic scientific principles that underpin clinical neurology. Many of these advances have already had a major impact on routine clinical practice, and this is likely to continue in the future. Although this makes it an exciting time to practice neurology, it also presents new challenges. How can established general neurologists keep up-to-date with clinically relevant scientific advances, and how can the specialist remain competent outside his own field? What should trainee neurologists learn to prepare themselves for the future career? Written by experts in the field, this timely book presents the scientific principles behind neurology. It aims to take the reader from the human genome, through gene expression, to molecular and cellular pathology, and subsequently to contemporary clinical investigations and clinical trials. Each contribution includes a discussion about the future of the field and highlights areas of potential growth and their relevance to routine clinical practice over the next decade. The succinctly written chapters will be easily accessible to both neurologists and trainees who have no expertise in the area. Many of the chapters are co-written by a clinician and a basic scientist, and each has been subject to peer review — both by experts in the field and a “jobbing” general neurologist. This has ensured that the contributions reflect contemporary scientific thinking which is presented in a way that is easy to digest. The book includes generous use of diagrams to help explain difficult concepts, a glossary explaining the terminology, and provides information on links to web-based resources for further information. Book Description :

Rabies is the most current and comprehensive account of one of the oldest diseases known that remains a significant public health threat despite the efforts of many who have endeavored to control it in wildlife and domestic animals. During the past five years since publication of the first edition there have been new developments in many areas on the rabies landscape. This edition takes on a more global perspective with many new authors offering fresh outlooks on each topic. Clinical features of rabies in humans and animals are discussed as well as basic science aspects, molecular biology, pathology, and pathogenesis of this disease. Current methods used in defining geographic origins and animal species infected in wildlife are presented, along with diagnostic methods for identifying the strain of virus based on its genomic sequence and antigenic structure. This multidisciplinary account is essential for clinicians as well as public health advisors, epidemiologists, wildlife biologists, and research scientists wanting to know more about the virus and the disease it causes. * Offers a unique global perspective on rabies where dog rabies is responsible for killing more people than yellow fever, dengue fever, or Japanese encephalitis * More than 7 million people are potentially exposed to the virus annually and about 50,000 people, half of them children, die of rabies each year * New edition includes greatly expanded coverage of bat rabies which is now the most prominent source of human rabies in the New World and Western Europe, where dog rabies has been controlled * Recent successes of controlling wildlife rabies with an emphasis on prevention is discussed * Approximately 40% updated material incorporates recent knowledge on new approaches to therapy of human rabies as well as issues involving organ and tissue transplantation * Includes an increase in illustrations to more accurately represent this diseases’ unique horror

Book Description :

Mental health and HIV/AIDS are closely interlinked. Mentaldisorders, including substance-use disorders, are associated withincreased risk of HIV infection and affect adherence to andefficacy of antiretroviral treatments. Conversely, HIVinfection can increase risk for neuropsychiatric complicationsincluding stress, mood, and neurocognitive disorders. This book provides clinicians with a comprehensive evidenced-basedand practical approach to the management of patients with HIVinfection and co-morbid mental disorders. It provides up-to-dateand clear overviews of current clinical issues, as well as therelevant basic science. Information and data from studies ofdifferent HIV groups (eg men who have sex with men) make the textrelevant to a broad spectrum of clinicians, including those workingwith low socioeconomic status groups in high income countries andthose working in the developing world. The book uses the popular format of the World PsychiatricAssociation’s Evidence and Experience series. Reviewchapters summarize the evidence on the epidemiology, pathogenesisand clinical aspects of mental disorders in HIV,and interventions(both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology including drug-druginteractions). These are complemented by commentariesaddressing particular facets of each topic and providing insightgained from clinical experience. Psychiatrists, psychologists and all mental health staff workingwith HIV-infected patients will find this book of greatbenefit.

Book Description :

Neurovirology, the study of viral infection of the ner vous system, has evolved at the interface of three of the most rapidly unfolding fields of investigation-neurobiology, vi rology, and immunology. In all three, increasing knowledge about the molecular structure of surface receptors, how in tracellular messages are transmitted, and how diversity is regulated genetically is provided, along with the techniques of molecular biology. This promises to give us knowledge not only about the process of infection and the complex host and viral determinants of neuroinvasiveness and neurovirulence, but eventually it will provide the background from which to engineer vaccines and to devise novel therapeutic agents. Animal virology and molecular biology developed quite independently from different origins. Animal virology was originally the province of the pathologists, and by clinical observation and histological preparations, they tried to ex plain the incubation period, the pathways of virus spread, and the mechanisms of disease. Molecular virology grew out of biochemistry, particularly through studies of bacterio phage, with emphasis on the physical and chemical structure of viruses and the sequences of biochemical events during the replicative cycle in cells.

Book Description :

Compiled reviews of the recent literature are a long established tradition in the laboratory and clinical sciences, and bring to their professions a useful and timely summary of the advances that have been made in the field. Neuropsychology has matured as a science and profession to support a like effort to summarize, across domains, the direction and momentum in the field. The authors are authorities in the subjects they review and provide for the investigator, practitioner and student an overview of the important developments in neuropsychology that cannot be realized from perusal of the journals alone. Interest in the reviews are likely to go beyond the discipline of neuropsychology, and will extend to all with an interest in science of brain-behavior relationships, in the study of disease and injury as they affect brain function, and in the rehabilitation of the individual who has suffered insult to brain. Chapters cover the pragmatic application of tests and test findings to improve our understanding of the behavior of individuals who present with neurocognitive disorders. Where there is interest in efficiently acquiring a sound perspective of the important advances and the future direction of neuropsychology, Neuropsychology: A Review of Science and Practice will provide the means for so doing as no other publication can offer.

Book Description :

Neuropathology of Drug Addictions and Substance Misuse, Volume 2: Stimulants, Club and Dissociative Drugs, Hallucinogens, Steroids, Inhalants and International Aspects is the second of three volumes in this informative series and offers a comprehensive examination of the adverse consequences of the most common drugs of abuse. Each volume serves to update the reader’s knowledge on the broader field of addiction as well as to deepen understanding of specific addictive substances. Volume 2 addresses stimulants, club and dissociative drugs, hallucinogens, and inhalants and solvents. Each section provides data on the general, molecular and cellular, and structural and functional neurological aspects of a given substance, with a focus on the adverse consequences of addictions. Research shows that the neuropathological features of one addiction are often applicable to those of others, and understanding these commonalties provides a platform for studying specific addictions in more depth and may ultimately lead researchers toward new modes of understanding, causation, prevention, and treatment. However, marshalling data on the complex relationships between addictions is difficult due to the myriad material and substances. Offers a modern approach to understanding the pathology of substances of abuse, offering an evidence-based ethos for understanding the neurology of addictions Fills an existing gap in the literature by serving as a “one-stop-shopping synopsis of everything to do with the neuropathology of drugs of addiction and substance misuse Includes in each chapter: list of abbreviations, abstract, introduction, applications to other addictions and substance misuse, mini-dictionary of terms, summary points, 6+ figures and tables, and full references Offers coverage of preclinical, clinical, and population studies, from the cell to whole organs, and from the genome to whole body
