Book Description :

The fourth edition of Current Management in Child Neurology provides succinct reviews in the form of superb "how-to" chapters on the most common neurological complaints and pathologic conditions seen in pediatric practice. This volume provides clinicians with a state-of-the-art "toolbox" for diagnosis and treatment of the most commonly presented neurologic disorders and dysfunctions in children, including headache, seizures and epilepsy, neurobehavioral disorders, school readiness, developmental delay, trauma, meningitis and encephalitis, injury to the preterm and term brains, and status epilepticus. Chapters new to the 4th edition include information on a range of other conditions such as microcephaly, neurodegenerative disorders, chromosomal disorders, epilepsy in adolescence, epileptic encephalopathy, pediatric neurotransmitter disorders, and tropical child neurology as well as current approaches to neonatal or infantile facial dysmorphism and congenital muscular dystrophies. The 4th edition of Current Management in Child Neurology has 111 chapters organized into three sections: Clinical Practice Trends, The Office Visit, and The Hospitalized Child. Each of the sections contains carefully selected readings and Web resources for practitioners and patients who seek relevant information on topics addressed in the book's chapters. Book Description :

This book is devoted to the neuropsychological description of childhood epilepsy, a neurolo- cal condition that constitutes one of the most prevalent forms of chronic and disabling childhood illnesses. Indeed, one child out of 20 experiences one or more seizures before the age of 5, and one in a hundred develops epilepsy as a chronic disorder. Approximately half of these children with epilepsy display academic difficulties and/or behavioral disorders. Moreoever, it is now believed that a sizable proportion of children with learning disability suffer from undiagnosed epilepsy. While a great number of textbooks have been devoted to various medical aspects of chi- hood epilepsy (diagnosis, genetics, etiology, drug and surgical treatment, etc.), there have been no comprehensive accounts of the cognitive consequences of this condition. Advance of medical knowledge has shown that childhood epilepsy should not be considered as a single disorder but encompasses a whole range of different conditions that exhibit specific clinical EEG and outcome characteristics. It is not becoming apparent that these various clinical entities have different cognitive expression that yet need to be specified. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete up-to-date analysis of this multi-faceted pathology.

Book Description :

Tics affect more than 10% of the population, and can be an unpleasant and disruptive problem. They include chronic tic disorder, Tourette?s syndrome and habit disorders such as hair pulling, nail biting and scratching. Treatment is either by medication (without convincing evidence) or psychological means. Before the introduction of habit reversal psychologists had no real alternatives to offer, and even this method lacks evidence for its efficacy and is not widely used. Illustrated throughout with case study examples and containing detailed guidelines for patient and therapist on the use of CBT, this book provides a comprehensive review of what is known about the occurrence and diagnosis of tics. Kieron O'Connor explores the various theories currently available to explain the causes and progression of these disorders, and discusses the assessment and treatment options available. Finally he takes the most widely accepted psychological therapy ? cognitive behaviour therapy - and applies it for the first time to the treatment of tics.

Book Description :

“Re-education” consists in training people injured either by illness or the vagaries of life to achieve the best functionality now possible for them. Strangely, the subject is not taught in the normal educational curricula of the relevant professions. It thus tends to be developed anew with each patient, without recourse to knowledge of what such training, or assistance in such training, might be. New paradigms of re-education are in fact possible today, thanks to advances in cognitive science, and new technologies such as virtual reality and robotics. They lead to the re-thinking of the procedures of physical medicine, as well as of re-education. The first part looks anew at re-education in the context of both international classifications of functionality, handicap and health, and the concept of normality. The second part highlights the function of implicit memory in re-education. And the last part shows the integration of new cognition technologies in the new paradigms of re-education.

Children Without Language

Children Without Language Book
Author : Laurent Danon-Boileau

Release : 2006
ISBN : 0195175026
Language : En, Es, Fr & De

Book Description :

Communication and language disorders are often considered from one particular point of view - either psychological or neurological. Danon-Boileau argues that this is a serious mistake. He emphasizes that a child's trouble can stem from a variety of causes: neurological problems similar to those of aphasia, cognitive impairments, and psychological disorders, and, thus, the interaction of these elements needs to be taken into account. In precise case studies, Danon-Boileau describes the situations he has confronted and traces the causes of changes in the child when they happen. Combining linguistic, cognitive, and psycholanalytic approaches, Children without Language provides a unique perspective on speech and communication disorders in children and will be an essential volume for speech therapists, developmental psychologists, linguistics scholars and anyone wishing to reflect seriously on why we speak and how communication occurs.

Book Description :
