Book Description :

Neuroepidemiology in Tropical Health covers major neurological diseases of relevance in tropical settings and examines the specificities of epidemiology of neurological diseases in the context of tropical countries that face many challenges when compared to the developed world. Part One focuses on methods and their eventual specificities, and how such methods, like sampling, can be adapted for specific scenarios. Parts Two and Three discuss environmental factors and their consequences for neurology in the tropical world, as well as large geographical areas and their specificities. Finally, Part Four presents relevant neurological diseases in in-depth chapters. This invaluable information will help readers recognize the various neurological conditions presented, with the inclusion of their aetiologies and treatment in tropical areas. The book therefore fills a gap in the neuroepidemiology literature, with chapters written by an international collection of experienced authors in the field. Highlights differences and similarities between neuroepidemiology in tropical areas and temperate zones with a focus on methods and underlying factors Covers environmental factors in the tropical world and their consequences for neurology Chapters include references (key articles, books, protocols) for additional detailed study Includes wide topics of neurological disease in the tropics, not only infectious diseases, but also nutrition and public health

Book Description :

Neuroepidemiology is a branch of epidemiology involving the study of neurological disease distribution and determinants of frequency in human populations. Neuroepidemiology has been perceived for a long time as a science of incidence, prevalence, risk factors, natural history and prognosis of neurological disorders. However, the other integral part of neuroepidemiology is experimental neuroepidemiology, which is research based on clinical trials of effectiveness or efficacy of various interventions in neurological disorders. Neuroepidemiological researches have been conducted since 1960’s, with the development of epidemiological methodology and advance of the clinical neurology. Most improvement of neuroepidemiology was in western countries, largely in US and European countries. This study field has been developed quite late in resourcelimited areas, where 60% of world’s populations are living in. Disease burden of neurological disorders, such as stroke, epilepsy, migraine, neurodegenerated diseases (AD, PD), multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), are extremely heavy in low and middle income countries (LAMICs), especially with the increasing aging population in these regions. Because of their progressive and disabling nature, these neurological disorders have major adverse personal, social, and economic consequences. Prevention and early detection are critical, because there are no cures and the clinical diagnosis typically occurs after substantial and often irreversible neuronal loss.

Book Description :

Neuroepidemiology covers the foundations of neuroepidemiological research and the epidemiology of disorders primarily affecting the nervous system, as well as those originating outside the nervous system. The etiology of many important central nervous system disorders remains elusive. Even with diseases where the key risk determinants have been identified, better prevention and therapy is needed to reduce high incidence and mortality. Although evolving technologies for studying disease provide opportunities for such, it is essential for researchers and clinicians to understand how best to apply such technology in the context of carefully characterized patient populations. By paying special attention to methodological approaches, this volume prepares new investigators from a variety of disciplines to conduct epidemiological studies in order to discern the etiologic factors and underlying mechanisms that influence the onset, progression, and recurrence of CNS disorders and diseases. The book also provides current information on methodological approaches for clinical neurologists seeking to expand their knowledge in research. Includes coverage of the foundations of neuroepidemiological research and the epidemiology of disorders primarily affecting the nervous system, as well as those originating outside the nervous system Describes the most recent methodologies to define and quantify the burden of CNS disorders and to understand the underlying mechanisms, with neuroimaging and molecular methods receiving particular emphasis Offers extensive description of those neurological conditions that are secondary to other diseases whose incidence is on the rise because of longer survival rates Features chapters authored by leaders in the field from around the globe

First published in 1991. This one-of-a-kind publication pays tribute to one of the pre-eminent scientists and educators in neuroepidemiology, Dr. Bruce Schoenberg. The goal of this book is to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of the work that has taken place in the field of neuroepidemiology over the last decade and address the challenges and prospects of the future. The work presented in this volume focuses on clinically relevant issues related to the magnitude, distribution, natural history, risk factors, treatment, and prevention of the more common neurologic disorders. It also emphasizes methodological problems that affect the design and implementation of studies, as well as the interpretation of results. The book's concise format provides quick access to the major results, difficulties, and challenges discussed within the text. Neuroepidemiology: A Tribute to Bruce Schoenberg should be considered an essential addition to the libraries of all clinical neurologists and epidemiologists.

Book Description :

On May 4, 1993, Cuba asked the international health community and the World Health Organization (WHO) to find the cause of a mysterious epidemic of blindness that was spreading uncontrollably. Contradictory hypotheses confronted the team of scientists on this mission. Is the epidemic the result of a plot to topple Castro, as the Cubans believe? Or exposure to radioactivity or an unidentified nerve toxin accidentally released by the Russian Army withdrawing from Cuba? Cuban Blindness: Diary of a Mysterious Epidemic Neuropathy is a firsthand account of the epidemic of blindness and the hardships of life in Cuba at the time of the "special period" that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union and the tightening of the US embargo. Dr. Román—who was at the time Chief of Neuroepidemiology at the US National Institutes of Health—was a participant in this scientific mission and describes the neurological symptoms experienced by the victims of this epidemic disease, and narrates the epidemiologists’ detective work struggling to solve the mystery. This book combines neuroscience and scientific discovery with political intrigue, finally bringing the reader to the unexpected solution provided by a WWII survivor of Changi POW Camp in Singapore. Cuban Blindness: Diary of a Mysterious Epidemic Neuropathy is a description of the neuroepidemiological study undertaken to identify the cause of the epidemic neurological disease that affected Cuba in 1993-1994. Summarizes clinical manifestations in prototypical case reports Analyzes possible neurological and neuroepidemiological causes from possible viruses to toxins Discusses the health ramifications of political decisions surrounding the Cuban Embargo Describes the implementation of treatment and preventive measures
