Scientific Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: Distinction, University of Western Sydney (School of Management ), course: Human Resource Strategy, 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The organisational culture as a complex and multilayer concept and embraces regarding to Cameron and Quinn “...the taken-for-granted values, underlying assumptions, expectations, collective memories and definitions present in an organisation” (2006, p. 16). Regarding to Lasher (1999) the term of organisational culture describes the general operating mode and the character of an organisation. Further the organisational culture is often distinguished between the external visible and the hidden section (Lewis, 1998). The culture of an organisation becomes visibly manifested in its lived politics, processes, symbols and behaviours. While the emotions, beliefs and values of organisational members as well as the fundamental basic assumptions respectively the ‘Paradigm’ in the inner core of an organisation cause the hidden part of an organisational culture (Lewis, 1998). The employees take an outstanding position. They mark and affect the organisational culture and develop it to an organisation with a unique character. In this respect HRM is of substantial importance for the perceived culture. In their ‘Cultural Web’ concept Johnson, Scholes and Whittington (2005) focused on the extrinsic observable elements of an organisational culture and factored out the abstract and hidden cultural part of emotions, beliefs and values. The ‘Cultural Web’ represents the organisational assumptions - which are taken for granted and become manifest in the everyday behaviour of the organisational members – in six dimensions of cultural artefacts. Each dimension describes a certain aspect of the operating mode and behaviour in an organisation. The subsequent figure shows the ‘Cultural Web’ respectively the six manifest dimensions of the organisational ‘Paradigm’ of the Dicom Group plc. The artefacts can be attributed fundamentally to the technical, political or cultural subsystems of an organisation (Balogun and Hope Hailey, 2004)...

Book Description :

‘National Culture in Post-Apartheid Namibia‘ addresses the challenges of creating a ‘national’ culture in the context of a historical legacy that has emphasised ethnic diversity. The state sponsored Annual National Culture Festival (ANCF) focuses on the Kavango region in north-eastern Namibia. Akuupa critically examines the notion of Kavango-ness as a colonial construct and its subequent reconsitution and appropriation. He analyses the way in which cultural representations are produced by local people in the postcolonial African context of nation building and national reconciliation by bringing visions of cosmopolitanism and modernity into critical dialogue with the colonial past.

'The backward linkage strategies of major multinationals differ significantly between firms within the same industry. In this provocative book, Denise Tsang explains these differences in strategy in terms of the culture of the parent company and the age of the firm. Her case study of the European microcomputer industry encompasses major multinationals from the US, Japan, Taiwan and Korea, and includes both long-established firms and recent start-ups. It contains a wealth of fascinating detail which she elegantly synthesises to support her thesis.' - Mark Casson, University of Reading, UK 'This book is a major contribution to our understanding of international business strategy. It adopts a unique culturist view that has been long neglected by mainstream strategy theorists.' - Geoffrey G. Jones, Harvard Business School, US This timely book investigates the importance of national culture as it applies to the strategic management of multinationals. The author focuses on backward linkage strategies within US, Japanese, Taiwanese and Korean microcomputer multinationals investing in Europe. Book Description :

Based on anthropological fieldwork in the 1990s, this book provides an ethnographic perspective in its examination of the politics and policies of cultural tourism as they were played out under the Indonesian New Order regime. The successful New Order tourism policy ensured that tourism development both contributed to, and benefited from, increasing economic prosperity and a long stretch of political stability. However, that success has come at a price; the policy to encourage mainly 'high-quality' tourism revolved around carefully constructed and controlled tourist experiences that have led to local inequalities. The failure of this policy is analysed in a detailed case study of the city of Yogyakarta.

Using case studies, commentary and critique, the contributors discuss the importance of the two concepts in British social and cultural life, with examples from film, television, literature, urban planning, architecture and tourism. The phenomena of 'enterprise' and 'heritage' might at first thought seem unrelated: this book sets out to show that the two concepts are not only related but deeply interdependent. If 'enterprise' can be used to define the official encouragement of the values of the market society, then the growth of the heritage industry can be seen as a manifestation of the entrepreneurial spirit - marketing the past so that it is accessible to the man or woman in the street.Using case studies, commentary and critique, the contributors to this lively volume discuss the importance of 'enterprise' and 'heritage' in British social and cultural life, with examples drawn from film, television, literature, urban planning, architecture, government advertising, information technology and tourism.

Book Description :

How national culture impacts organizational culture—and business success Using extensive case studies of successful global corporations, this book explores the impact of national culture on the corporate strategy and its execution, and through this ultimately business success—or failure. It does not argue that different cultures lead to different business results, but that all cultures impact organizations in ways both positive and negative, depending on the business cycle, the particular business, and the particular strategies being pursued. Depending on all of these factors, cultural dynamics can either enable or derail performance. But recognizing those cultural factors is difficult for business leaders; like everyone else, they too can be blind to the culture of which they are a part. The book offers managers and leaders eight recommendations for recognizing those cultural factors that negatively impact performance, as well as those that can be harnessed to encourage superior performance. With real case studies from companies in Asia, Europe, and the United States, this book offers a truly global approach to organizational culture. Offers a fresh approach to the effects of national culture on organizational culture that is applicable to any country in any region Based on case studies of such companies as Toyota, Samsung, General Motors, Nokia, Walmart, Kone and British Leyland It describes the origins and nature of the most common corporate crisis and how culture impacts the response to such a crisis Ideal for managers, business leaders, and board members, as well as business school students A welcome response to the flat-Earth fad that argues we're all alike, this book offers a nuanced and practical view of cultural differentiators and how they can enable or derail business performance.
