Book Description :

This volume intends to contribute to “translational medicine and biology”. By this, we mean a bi-directional process whose aim is to develop knowledge from basic science towards diagnostic and therapeutic applications and reciprocally to raise new questions for basic scientists. One general requirement for translational research is to establish a multidisciplinary knowledge base shared by the actors of various specialties. This is precisely the aim of the 12 chapters of this book. It will be useful for scientists, including PhD students, who want to become more familiar with the main concepts of NPC pathology, medical imaging and current therapeutics. Conversely, medical doctors who want to update their knowledge of NPC biology will benefit from chapters on viral and cellular oncogenesis and various aspects of host-tumor interactions.

Book Description :

Stem cell research is one of the fascinating areas of contemporary biology, but, as with many expanding fields of scientific inquiry, research on stem cells raises scientific questions as rapidly as it generates discoveries. Research on stem cell treatment continues to advance knowledge about how an organism develops from a single cell and how healthy cells replace damaged cells in adult organisms. The most important potential application of human stem cells is the generation of cells and tissues that could be used for cell-based therapies, especially oncology. The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, collaborated with the center of excellence and innovation (Pusat Unggulan Inovasi /PUI). The Stem Cell center of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) organized an International Conference. The International Stem Cell and Oncology Conference (ISCOC) 2017 was a comprehensive academic conference in the field of stem cell and oncology research and also tropical medicine and related scientific topics. We expect Stem Cell Oncology will benefit academics and practitioners in the field of health sciences in Indonesia. This is an Open Access ebook, and can be found on www.taylorfrancis.com.

Book Description :

The emphasis on cancer management in the past was based primarily on control rates from multidisciplinary input in management. There has always been a recognition that one would like to achieve the best result with the least complication, but never has there been any major emphasis on evidence-based outcome studies, nor on functional preservation and quality of life. The authors of this book have dealt very effectively with the various tumor types in head and neck cancer with the experts in the ? eld of management. The contents range from epidemiology and treatment outcome, treatment techniques with the potential impact on the quality of life such as dysphagia, to the various options relative to high technology radiation therapy programs for mana- ment. The potential for improving form and function through surgical care as an integrated part of the program is dealt with very effectively as well as the potentials for chemotherapy and the use of targeted agents have on quality of life issues. The volume also addresses toxicity, quality of life, and techniques for prevention of adverse effects, as well as the potentials for rehabilitation and supportive care. The authors have clearly done an extraordinarily good job in addressing the mul- plicity of problems that impact upon the functional preservation and quality of life in head and neck radiation therapy. Book Description :

To stimulate greater German-Chinese cooperation in the field of oncology, the Ger man Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) carried through a "Chinese-German Sympo sium on Cancer of the Liver, the Esophagus, and the Nasopharynx" in Heidelberg from 3 to 5 July 1985. These three forms of cancer were chosen as they are extremely rare in Europe but some of the most frequently found forms in China. Almost half of the roughly 260000 cases of primary liver cancer occurring annually worldwide are Chinese; of the roughly 300000 esophagus cancers occurring annually, more than half are Chinese; nasopharyngeal cancer is roughly 100 times more frequent among Chinese people than in Caucasians. Under these circumstances, it is not surprising that the Chinese guest speakers of the Heidelberg symposium - selected specialists in the three subsections of oncolo gy mentioned - were able to report about extensive experiences with patient popu lations of a size hardly imaginable in Europe. The great clinical experience of the Chinese guests was supplemented by special contributions of European experts. Thus, this volume permits a topical survey of the state of the art in these three can cers, with subsections of epidemiology, pathology, and clinical treatment. The editors wish to thank the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMFT) for their encouragement and direct help in preparing and carrying through the symposium, the Management Board of the DKFZ for their generous assistance and Springer-Verlag for the publication and excellent production of this volume.

Book Description :

This comprehensive account of the human herpesviruses provides an encyclopedic overview of their basic virology and clinical manifestations. This group of viruses includes human simplex type 1 and 2, Epstein–Barr virus, Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, cytomegalovirus, HHV6A, 6B and 7, and varicella-zoster virus. The viral diseases and cancers they cause are significant and often recurrent. Their prevalence in the developed world accounts for a major burden of disease, and as a result there is a great deal of research into the pathophysiology of infection and immunobiology. Another important area covered within this volume concerns antiviral therapy and the development of vaccines. All these aspects are covered in depth, both scientifically and in terms of clinical guidelines for patient care. The text is illustrated generously throughout and is fully referenced to the latest research and developments.
