"Contamination of scarce water resources with pollutants is a grave environmental problem of global concern. Many researchers are developing materials and technologies for contaminant abatement and efficient water treatment. Among various proposed nanomaterials, graphene and its derivatives have shown remarkable potential for efficient removal of contaminants from water. The versatile chemistry and high specific surface area of GO are key to successful removal of a wide array of classical and emerging contaminants from water; however, the aqueous stability of GO is an obstacle for its practical use in water treatment facilities, since recovering contaminant-loaded GO from the treated water is a major challenge. Self-assembly of GO into porous 3D macrostructures (3DMs) such as sponges has been proposed as a solution for the aqueous stability problem of particulate GO. Although GO sponges have been shown to remove various contaminants from water, their available surface area and mechanical properties are often few orders of magnitude lower than that of GO nanosheets. In the first part of this thesis, we critically reviewed the literature on GO 3DMs having environmental applications. Using the available data in the literature, we developed a critical link between the materials properties of GO 3DMs and their environmental performance. We identified key controlling parameters for tuning the environmental performance of GO sponges such as their specific surface area, bulk density, and elastic modulus. In the second part of the thesis, we explored various strategies for improving the performance of the GO sponges by tailoring their identified key properties, such as pore architecture, elastic modulus, bulk density and hydrophobicity.We used excess amounts of VC as reducing agent and soft-templating phase for synthesizing reduced GO (rGO) sponges with hierarchical porosity. The resulting sponges comprised bimodal pore architecture with highly interconnected pores. We also used cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), naturally sourced cellulosic nanorods, in conjunction with rGO to obtain hybrid rGO-CNC sponges. CNCs significantly improved the mechanical properties of the sponges, and also contributed to increasing the available surface area of the hybrid sponges by inhibiting the restacking of rGO nanosheets during the self-assembly process. The nanohybrid sponges exhibited exceptional performance in removing traditional and emerging contaminants from water such as dyes, heavy metal ions, toxins, hormones, and pharmaceuticals. The improved mechanical properties enabled their regeneration and reuse with minimal destruction of their structure.In another study, we compared the performance of hierarchical rGO sponges synthesized with excess amounts of VC with uniformly-porous rGO sponges processed by non-excess amounts of VC in absorbing oils and organic solvents. Oils and organic solvents are removed by physical absorption in the pore spaces of the sponges. The low density and the highly porous hierarchical sponge showed remarkably higher absorption capacity than the uniformly porous sponge, despite their similar surface chemistry. Given that the mitigation of marine oil spills is highly desirable, we investigated the effect of simulated marine environment on the physical and mechanical properties of the hierarchical rGO sponges. We observed that exposure to marine conditions had no significant effect on the properties of the sponges.Finally, we studied sponges processed by hydrothermal heating of GO colloids for removal of oils and organic solvents. One parameter promoting the absorption of oils and organic solvents is the hydrophobicity of the sponges. We increased the hydrophobicity of the hydrothermal sponges by functionalizing them with L-tryptophan, a highly hydrophobic essential amino acid. L-tryptophan acted as a green reducing agent.The hydrophobic sponges showed remarkable removal capacity for oils and organic solvent"--
