Book Description :

In this work, an efficient method with a limited amount of solvent use is presented to produce high-performance flat sheet composite membranes for gas separation. In particular, a series of polydimethylsiloxane/low-density polyethylene (PDMS/LDPE) membranes were produced by coating an active PDMS layer on a microporous LDPE support via continuous extrusion and salt leaching using immersion in hot water. The proposed method is simple and cost-effective since it is based on inexpensive materials (LDPE and PDMS) and uses a low amount of an environmentally friendly solvent (water). To improve the composite membranes performance and properties, trimethylsiloxy grafted fumed silica (TFS) particles were incorporated into the PDMS layer to produce PDMS-TFS/LDPE nano-composite membranes. The membranes were then characterized in terms of morphology, porosity and pore size distribution, as well as thermal, mechanical, sorption and permeation properties. Since the membrane properties depend on the processing conditions, the composite membranes production was optimized for a different number of coatings, nano-particles loading and coating concentration. Membrane performance (permeability and selectivity) was studied under different operating conditions (temperature and pressure), and the results showed that the PDMSTFS10%/ LDPE nano-composite membrane is highly suitable for different industrial applications of higher hydrocarbon separations.

Book Description :

The application of membranes in liquid and gas separation is attractive because of their energy efficiency. Synthesis of membranes with well-defined nanostructure is necessary to achieve highly permeability and selectivity for separation processes. Recently, carbon nanomaterials such as graphene oxide nanoplatelets (GONPs) and carbon nanodots (CNDs) have emerged as an interesting class of nanomaterials due to their unique properties and tailorable functionalities. Incorporation of these nanomaterials in the membranes has been shown to improve membrane selectivity, mechanical robustness, and chemical stability. This dissertation elaborates on developing CNDs or GONPs embedded thin film composite (TFC) membranes using layer-by-layer (LbL) synthesis technique. Regarding the water desalination applications, GONPs were used to enhance the TFC membranes’ selectivity, chlorine resistant properties, and surface hydrophilicity. Incorporation of GONPs in the polyamide layer via LbL method resulted in an increase of surface hydrophilicity and salt rejection properties. Upon exposure to chlorine, GONPs embedded membranes retained salt rejection performance better than the pristine membranes (without GONPs). The LbL assembly was used to synthesize CNDs based TFC membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) applications. Using the LbL framework, amine-functionalized CNDs were covalently crosslinked with trimesoyl chloride monomer to obtain nanoscale membranes. The synthesized membranes manifested high selectivity (up to 90%) when tested for dye molecules such as brilliant blue and disperse red in methanol. As the CNDs synthesized here are fluorescent under UV light, the resultant film is also fluorescent. This property can be harnessed for diagnostic purposes, such as tracking mechanical failure and fouling of the membranes. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the incorporation of carbon nanomaterials in the polymeric membranes has enhanced the hydrophilicity, mechanical stability, and chlorine resistant properties of the membranes. Overall, the LbL platform can be considered as a modular method in embedding nanoparticles in TFC membranes.

Book Description :

Membranes are an energy efficient separation technology that are now the basis for many water treatment and food processing applications. However, there is the potential to improve the operating performance of these separations and to extend the application of membranes to energy production, gas separations, organic solvent-based separations, and biomedical applications through novel membrane materials. This book contains 20 chapters written by leading academic researchers on membrane fabrication and modification techniques and provides a comprehensive overview on the recent developments of membrane technology. Membranes can be manufactured from a range of materials including polymeric compounds, and ceramic materials, and both these materials are considered in the book. There are 5 chapters on water and wastewater membranes that cover the fabrication of thin film (TFC) composite membranes for nanofiltration(NF)/reverse osmosis (RO)/forward osmosis (FO) applications, stimuli responsive membranes, electrospun membranes, porous ceramic membranes, and polymeric ultrafiltration (UF) manufacture and modification. There are another 6 chapters on gas separation that consider carbon membranes, zeolite membranes, silica template and metal oxide silica membranes, TFC membranes, silica membranes, and metal organic framework (MOF) membranes. Zeolite membranes are also considered for organic solvent applications, as are solvent-resistant membranes manufactured by phase inversion, ceramic-supported composite membranes, and ceramic NF membranes. The emerging areas of membranes for energy and biomedical applications have 3 and 2 chapters, respectively. Energy applications consider ion exchange membranes for use in fuel cells, membranes for electrodialysis, and membranes for use in microbial fuel cells. For biomedical applications the chapters focus on hemodialysis membranes and redox responsive membranes.

Book Description :

Nanotechnology has been established in membrane technology for decades. In this book, comprehensive coverage is given to nanotechnology applications in synthetic membrane processes, which are used in different fields such as water treatment, separation of gases, the food industry, military use, drug delivery, air filtration, and green chemistry. Nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, and dendrimers are contributing to the development of more efficient and cost-effective water filtration processes. Gas separation and carbon capture can be significantly improved in flue gas applications. Nanoporous membrane systems engineered to mimic natural filtration systems are being actively developed for use in smart implantable drug delivery systems, bio artificial organs, and other novel nano-enabled medical devices. The microscopic structure of nanoporous ceramic membranes, mainly focusing on zeolite materials, as well as the energy-saving effect of membrane separation, contribute to various chemical synthesis processes. In the food industry, nanotechnology has the potential to create new tools for pathogen detection and packaging. For each application, nanotechnology is mostly used to make composite membranes, and the book provides a detailed look at the mechanisms by which the composite membrane works in each application area.
