Book Description :

Novel processing and searching tools for the management of new multimedia documents have developed. Multimedia Information Retrieval (MIR) is an organic system made up of Text Retrieval (TR); Visual Retrieval (VR); Video Retrieval (VDR); and Audio Retrieval (AR) systems. So that each type of digital document may be analysed and searched by the elements of language appropriate to its nature, search criteria must be extended. Such an approach is known as the Content Based Information Retrieval (CBIR), and is the core of MIR. This novel content-based concept of information handling needs to be integrated with more traditional semantics. Multimedia Information Retrieval focuses on the tools of processing and searching applicable to the content-based management of new multimedia documents. Translated from Italian by Giles Smith, the book is divided into two parts. Part one discusses MIR and related theories, and puts forward new methodologies; part two reviews various experimental and operating MIR systems, and presents technical and practical conclusions. Gives a complete, organic picture of MIR and CBIR Proposes a novel conceptualisation around the ideas of Information Retrieval (IR) and digital document management in the context of Library and Information Science (LIS) Relevant for both library and information science and information technology specialists

Book Description :

Multimedia information retrieval: That is the desire to make computers see, hear and understand like humans do. Is it possible to give perception to machines, to make them understand facial expressions, hummed melodies, stock charts and ECG curves? If yes, the computer would become an even more valuable companion in business and private life. Think of the possibilities in, for example, healthcare, home security, online customer support or market analysis. This book explains what is possible in multimedia information retrieval today and what is not. We introduce the basic concepts, explain why the first step is always summarization and the second classification, which is essentially applying human understanding of some context on the summary. We group and discuss the various methods that have been proposed for the summarization of audio, visual and other media information. In classification, we build on today's psychological understanding of human cognition. Successfully, we transfer concepts of human similarity perception on machine classification. We cluster machine learning methods by their approach, model and process. On top of that, we link back from the state of the art methods of multimedia information retrieval to human cognition: We propose artificial neural structures for the building blocks of media summarization and classification. The result is a balanced introduction into the field that starts from graduate IT knowledge and ends at the current frontiers of multimedia research.

Book Description :

Multimedia Information Retrieval: Content-Based Information Retrieval from Large Text and Audio Databases addresses the future need for sophisticated search techniques that will be required to find relevant information in large digital data repositories, such as digital libraries and other multimedia databases. Because of the dramatically increasing amount of multimedia data available, there is a growing need for new search techniques that provide not only fewer bits, but also the most relevant bits, to those searching for multimedia digital data. This book serves to bridge the gap between classic ranking of text documents and modern information retrieval where composite multimedia documents are searched for relevant information. Multimedia Information Retrieval: Content-Based Information Retrieval from Large Text and Audio Databases begins to pave the way for speech retrieval; only recently has the search for information in speech recordings become feasible. This book provides the necessary introduction to speech recognition while discussing probabilistic retrieval and text retrieval, key topics in classic information retrieval. The book then discusses speech retrieval, which is even more challenging than retrieving text documents because word boundaries are difficult to detect, and recognition errors affect the retrieval effectiveness. This book also addresses the problem of integrating information retrieval and database functions, since there is an increasing need for retrieving information from frequently changing data collections which are organized and managed by a database system. Multimedia Information Retrieval: Content-Based Information Retrieval from Large Text and Audio Databases serves as an excellent reference source and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

Book Description :

During recent years, huge efforts have been made to establish digital libraries, in a variety of media, offered from a variety of sources, and intended for a variety of professional and private user communities. As digital data collections proliferate, problems of resource selection and data fusion become major issues. Traditional search engines, even the best ones, are unable to provide access to the hidden web of information that is only available via digital library search interfaces. Originating from the SIGIR 2003 Workshop on Distributed Information Retrieval, held in Toronto, Canada in August 2003, this book presents extended and revised workshop papers as well as several invited papers on the topic to round off coverage of the core issues. The papers are devoted to recent research on the design and implementation of methods and tools for resource discovery, resource description, resource selection, data fusion, and user interaction.

Book Description :

The advent of increasingly large consumer collections of audio(e.g., iTunes), imagery (e.g., Flickr), and video (e.g., YouTube)is driving a need not only for multimedia retrieval but alsoinformation extraction from and across media. Furthermore, industrial and government collections fuel requirements for stockmedia access, media preservation, broadcast news retrieval, identity management, and video surveillance. Whilesignificant advances have been made in language processing forinformation extraction from unstructured multilingual text andextraction of objects from imagery and video, these advances havebeen explored in largely independent research communities who haveaddressed extracting information from single media (e.g., text, imagery, audio). And yet users need to search for conceptsacross individual media, author multimedia artifacts, and performmultimedia analysis in many domains. This collection is intended to serve several purposes, includingreporting the current state of the art, stimulating novel research, and encouraging cross-fertilization of distinct researchdisciplines. The collection and integration of a common base ofintellectual material will provide an invaluable service from whichto teach a future generation of cross disciplinary media scientistsand engineers.

Book Description :

Foreword by Karen Spärck Jones Intelligent multimedia information retrieval lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence, information retrieval, human-computer interaction, and multimedia computing. Its systems enable users to create, process, summarize, present, interact with, and organize information within and across different media such as text, speech, graphics, imagery, and video. These systems go beyond traditional hypermedia and hypertext environments to analyze and generate media, and support intelligent interaction with or via multiple media. The chapters of this volume, which grew out of the 1995 International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence Workshop on Intelligent Multimedia Information Retrieval, span a broad range of topics. The book is organized into seven sections: Content-Based Retrieval of Imagery, Content-Based Retrieval of Graphics and Audio, Content-Based Retrieval of Video, Speech and Language Processing for Video Retrieval, Architectures and Tools, Intelligent Hypermedia Retrieval, and Empirical Evaluations. Book Description :

Chapter 1 places into perspective a total Information Storage and Retrieval System. This perspective introduces new challenges to the problems that need to be theoretically addressed and commercially implemented. Ten years ago commercial implementation of the algorithms being developed was not realistic, allowing theoreticians to limit their focus to very specific areas. Bounding a problem is still essential in deriving theoretical results. But the commercialization and insertion of this technology into systems like the Internet that are widely being used changes the way problems are bounded. From a theoretical perspective, efficient scalability of algorithms to systems with gigabytes and terabytes of data, operating with minimal user search statement information, and making maximum use of all functional aspects of an information system need to be considered. The dissemination systems using persistent indexes or mail files to modify ranking algorithms and combining the search of structured information fields and free text into a consolidated weighted output are examples of potential new areas of investigation. The best way for the theoretician or the commercial developer to understand the importance of problems to be solved is to place them in the context of a total vision of a complete system. Understanding the differences between Digital Libraries and Information Retrieval Systems will add an additional dimension to the potential future development of systems. The collaborative aspects of digital libraries can be viewed as a new source of information that dynamically could interact with information retrieval techniques.
