Book Description :

Multilingual information is in high demand in today’s globalised economy. Industry and market globalisation, intensified collaboration between European countries, technological developments, the advent and consolidation of the Internet, the rise of electronic business, and the increased use of electronic documents are some of the factors that have fuelled this need. Multilingual Information Management draws on previous empirical research to explore how information and technologies are used within the community of translators as information facilitators among different languages and cultures, to help them become more productive and competitive in today’s market. The book consists of three parts, including a literature review on information and technology needs among translators; a research framework to investigate the perceptions and use of information and technology within their working environment; and a strategic proposal for an Information Systems approach to multilingual information professionals and information literacy training. Presents an interdisciplinary approach to multilingual information and technology management among information professionals Analyses the community of practice of translators as multilingual information facilitators and ICT users Contributes to further develop Information Literacy to a strategic level among information professionals Provides a methodological contribution through an evidence-based approach to practice Bridges the gap between the information-related disciplines of Information Science, Business Management, and Translation Studies

Book Description :

In the past twenty years, computers and networks have gained a prominent role in supporting human communications. This book presents recent research in multimodal information processing, which demonstrates that computers can achieve more than what telephone calls or videoconferencing can do. The book offers a snapshot of current capabilities for the analysis of human communications in several modalities – audio, speech, language, images, video, and documents – and for accessing this information interactively. The book has a clear application goal, which is the capture, automatic analysis, storage, and retrieval of multimodal signals from human interaction in meetings. This goal provides a controlled experimental framework and helps generating shared data, which is required for methods based on machine learning. This goal has shaped the vision of the contributors to the book and of many other researchers cited in it. It has also received significant long-term support through a series of projects, including the Swiss National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) in Interactive Multimodal Information Management (IM2), to which the contributors to the book have been connected.

Book Description :

We are living in a multilingual world and the diversity in languages which are used to interact with information access systems has generated a wide variety of challenges to be addressed by computer and information scientists. The growing amount of non-English information accessible globally and the increased worldwide exposure of enterprises also necessitates the adaptation of Information Retrieval (IR) methods to new, multilingual settings. Peters, Braschler and Clough present a comprehensive description of the technologies involved in designing and developing systems for Multilingual Information Retrieval (MLIR). They provide readers with broad coverage of the various issues involved in creating systems to make accessible digitally stored materials regardless of the language(s) they are written in. Details on Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) are also covered that help readers to understand how to develop retrieval systems that cross language boundaries. Their work is divided into six chapters and accompanies the reader step-by-step through the various stages involved in building, using and evaluating MLIR systems. The book concludes with some examples of recent applications that utilise MLIR technologies. Some of the techniques described have recently started to appear in commercial search systems, while others have the potential to be part of future incarnations. The book is intended for graduate students, scholars, and practitioners with a basic understanding of classical text retrieval methods. It offers guidelines and information on all aspects that need to be taken into consideration when building MLIR systems, while avoiding too many ‘hands-on details’ that could rapidly become obsolete. Thus it bridges the gap between the material covered by most of the classical IR textbooks and the novel requirements related to the acquisition and dissemination of information in whatever language it is stored.

Book Description :

The tenth campaign of the Cross Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) for European languages was held from January to September 2009. There were eight main eval- tion tracks in CLEF 2009 plus a pilot task. The aim, as usual, was to test the perfo- ance of a wide range of multilingual information access (MLIA) systems or system components. This year, about 150 groups, mainly but not only from academia, reg- tered to participate in the campaign. Most of the groups were from Europe but there was also a good contingent from North America and Asia. The results were presented at a two-and-a-half day workshop held in Corfu, Greece, September 30 to October 2, 2009, in conjunction with the European Conference on Digital Libraries. The workshop, attended by 160 researchers and system developers, provided the opportunity for all the groups that had participated in the evaluation campaign to get together, compare approaches and exchange ideas.

The importance of databases and information systems to the functioning of 21st century life is indisputable. This book presents papers from the 13th International Baltic Conference on Databases and Information Systems, held in Trakai, Lithuania, from 1- 4 July 2018. Since the first of these events in 1994, the Baltic DB&IS has proved itself to be an excellent forum for researchers, practitioners and PhD students to deliver and share their research in the field of advanced information systems, databases and related areas. For the 2018 conference, 69 submissions were received from 15 countries. Each paper was assigned for review to at least three referees from different countries. Following review, 24 regular papers were accepted for presentation at the conference, and from these presented papers the 14 best-revised papers have been selected for publication in this volume, together with a preface and three invited papers written by leading experts. The selected revised and extended papers present original research results in a number of subject areas: information systems, requirements and ontology engineering; advanced database systems; internet of things; big data analysis; cognitive computing; and applications and case studies. These results will contribute to the further development of this fast-growing field, and will be of interest to all those working with advanced information systems, databases and related areas.

The process of transforming data into actionable knowledge is a complex process that requires the use of powerful machines and advanced analytics technique. Analytics and Knowledge Management examines the role of analytics in knowledge management and the integration of big data theories, methods, and techniques into an organizational knowledge management framework. Its chapters written by researchers and professionals provide insight into theories, models, techniques, and applications with case studies examining the use of analytics in organizations. The process of transforming data into actionable knowledge is a complex process that requires the use of powerful machines and advanced analytics techniques. Analytics, on the other hand, is the examination, interpretation, and discovery of meaningful patterns, trends, and knowledge from data and textual information. It provides the basis for knowledge discovery and completes the cycle in which knowledge management and knowledge utilization happen. Organizations should develop knowledge focuses on data quality, application domain, selecting analytics techniques, and on how to take actions based on patterns and insights derived from analytics. Case studies in the book explore how to perform analytics on social networking and user-based data to develop knowledge. One case explores analyze data from Twitter feeds. Another examines the analysis of data obtained through user feedback. One chapter introduces the definitions and processes of social media analytics from different perspectives as well as focuses on techniques and tools used for social media analytics. Data visualization has a critical role in the advancement of modern data analytics, particularly in the field of business intelligence and analytics. It can guide managers in understanding market trends and customer purchasing patterns over time. The book illustrates various data visualization tools that can support answering different types of business questions to improve profits and customer relationships. This insightful reference concludes with a chapter on the critical issue of cybersecurity. Book Description :

The successful conclusion of the US-EU Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation offers the prospect of a new chapter in transatlantic cooperation. As with any international agreement in science and technology, the accord's full potential will be realized only if it can encourage mutually beneficial cooperation. With this in mind, responsible officials of the European Union (EU) and the U.S. government contacted the National Research Council's Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP) to discuss how this negotiating success might be publicized and productively exploited. It was agreed that the STEP Board should organize a conference to celebrate the accord, inform the U.S. and European research communities of the agreement, and explore specific opportunities for enhanced cooperation. At the same time, the conference would provide the occasion to review existing and evolving areas of transatlantic cooperation in science and technology from the perception of the United States, the European Commission, and the member states of the European Union.
