It is a macroscopic, deterministic particle method (Lagrangian meshfree method) developed by Koshizuka and Oka (1996).The MPS method is similar to the SPH (smoothed-particle hydrodynamics) method (Gingold and Monaghan, 1977; Lucy, 1977) in that both methods provide approximations to the strong form of the Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) on the basis of integral interpolants. However, the MPS method applies simplified differential operator models solely based on a local weighted averaging process without taking the gradient of a kernel function. In addition, the solution process of MPS method differs to that of the original SPH method as the solutions to the PDEs are obtained through a semi-implicit prediction-correction process rather than the fully explicit one in original SPH method.

Abstract: We developed a particle-based fluid simulation method with obstacles defined in implicit form. Our fluid simulation is based on the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method, a typical particle-based algorithm achieving incompressible flow. In general, the particle-based fluid simulation is performed with obstacles that are defined as a set of particles located along the boundaries. We employ the implicit representation for the geometric information of obstacles which requires a new formulation of particle motion at the vicinity of boundaries. The main difficulty of MPS-based simulation with implicit obstacles is the lack of boundary particles that are required for the computation of two quantities: particle number density and particle force determined by pressure field. In our formulation, new definitions of the two quantities giving good estimation of the original ones is developed and incorporated in the MPS algorithm. In addition, we provide a modified algorithm for the construction of discrete linear system specific to the implicit representation for the computation of particle pressure. Our numerical tests show that the proposed approximation techniques provide adequate particle motion at the vicinity of the implicitly defined obstacles.

The analysis has revealed the mechanism of eutectic melting due to eutectic reaction. Abstract: The eutectic reaction phenomenon was analyzed based on the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method. The improved MPS code was applied to three-dimensional Pb–Sn system experiments conducted at Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI). The experiments dealt with solid–solid contact materials at 225 and 205 °C. The mass diffusion process was modeled based on Fick's second law. The criterion of eutectic reaction was modeled based on binary phase diagram. The calculated penetration rates, i.e. height reduction rates, were compared with the experimental measurements. The results obtained by the MPS simulations exhibit good agreement with the experiments carried out at 205 and 225 °C. MPS simulation predicted that Sn particle will liquefy earlier than Pb particle.

The world we live in has been classified by the human mind, for descriptive and analysis purposes, to consist of fluids and solids, continua and molecules; and the analyses of fluids and solids at the continuum and molecular scales have traditionally been pursued separately. Fundamentally, however, there are only molecules and particles for any material that interact on the microscopic and macroscopic scales. Therefore, to unify the analysis of physical systems and to reach a deeper understanding of the behavior of nature in scientific investigations, and of the behavior of designs in engineering endeavors, a new level of analysis is necessary. This new level of mathematical modeling and numerical solution does not merely involve the analysis of a single medium but must encompass the solution of multi-physics problems involving fluids, solids, and their interactions, involving multi-scale phenomena from the molecular to the macroscopic scales, and must include uncertainties in the given data and the solution results. Nature does not distinguish between fluids and solids and does not ever repeat itself exactly. This new level of analysis must also include, in engineering, the effective optimization of systems, and the modeling and analysis of complete life spans of engineering products, from design to fabrication, to possibly multiple repairs, to end of service.
