This edition includes five new chapters and includes real world examples that can be used in everyday practice. With an entire section devoted to automobile collision data, crash dynamics, and human tolerance and injury factors, it's extensively referenced from the clinical and automotive crash literature. The second edition contains 5 new chapters that cover:- Emerging concepts in treating chronic whiplash pain has been added to explore some of the newer forms of treating the chronic patient.- Crash speeds and injury risk. This chapter is unique in that it explores various international publications that evaluate the risk. Attempts to dispel myths about crash speeds and gives a forensic overview of the application of these studies.- Have split the original chapter on injury mechanisms into 4 chapters in the second edition. Chapter 15 focuses specifically into the arena of general applications of biomechanics relating to automobile crashes. Chapters 16-18 provide individual chapters on frontal, side, and rear crash biomechanics. These chapters explore the individual complexities of the varying types of crashes.- Human factors that influence injury and recovery has been added as a separate chapter to provide more detailed information to the clinician. In addition, the authors have focused on adding more information about the sensitivity and specificity of various orthopedic and neurological tests, and have further explored the types of conditions that chiropractors treat. To view the list of contributors to this edition, click on the additional information button below.Christopher J. Book Description :

The National Transportation Safety Board has studied extensive data collected regarding vehicle collisions with trees, has investigated 19 accidents involving trees, and as a result has determined certain characteristics of such collisions. In addition, the Safety Board reviewed information supplied by seven States regarding accident data, roadside obstacle programs, and tree removal or protection programs. About 3,280 fatalities resulting from vehicle collisions with trees occur annually in the United States. NCSS data showed that vehicle accidents with trees are more severe than other frontal collisions and that when passengers fail to use restraints, fatalities may occur at speeds as low as 16 to 20 mph. The Safety Board found that few projects exist to remove or protect roadside trees, and that minimal delineation or warning signs existed at some of the accident locations. To reduce the number and severity of vehicle collisions with trees, the Safety Board has recommended implementing programs to warn motorists of the changes in roadway alignment and to protect or selectively remove roadside trees.

Book Description :

Case reviews based on autopsy studies have shown that motor vehicle collisions cause between 50 and 90% of traumatic aortic ruptures. Very few studies have analyzed the nature and severity of the collision forces associated with this injury. Our passenger car study (1984-1991) examined 36 collisions in which 39 fatally injured victims sustained aortic trauma. In this injury group, a disproportionate number of heavy truck and roadside fixed-object impacts occurred. Vehicle crash forces were generally severe and were either perpendicular or oblique to the vehicle surface. Intrusion into the occupant compartment was a significant factor in most of these fatal injuries. Occupant contact with vehicle interior surfaces was identified in most cases, and occupant restraints were often ineffective, especially in side collisions. The more elderly victims were seen in the least severe collisions.

Book Description :

Over the years numerous studies have been carried out on the characteristics of vehicular headlights that have been involved in motor vehicle collisions. The majority of these studies have concentrated on the older style sealed beam headlights which have their filaments orientated perpendicular to the normal direction of travel of a vehicle. In contrast, the modern quartz halogen lamp have filaments which are often orientated parallel to the direction of travel. Even though the principals of operation of both types of globes are very similar, some differences could be expected when examining their characteristics post collision. This is due to the difference in orientation of the filaments and the different composition of the globes. The aim of this research paper is to review known information and research relating to headlight filament examination. This information would be combined with the results of simulated testing to provide a data base detailing the different characteristics that are seen in headlight globes as a result of vehicle collisions.
