Book Description :

"How Did You Know? Thought it might have been written on my head. But you looked a little deeper instead. When we spoke; you would stare deep into my eyes. And did those things that made me realize. That you know me better than anyone can ..." In her poetry compilation "More Than Words, " Lauren Kramer shares her poignant personal journey through what she describes as the three stages of love-love granted, love denied, and love relinquished. Kramer's verse explores the experiences of love: the taste of a kiss is as sweet as the scent of a summer rose, the moment when someone leaves without a goodbye, the pain of the denial of love, and the lover with the ability to break down walls and see straight into your heart. As Kramer ranges through the joys of new love, the insecurities of unreturned affection, and the despair that accompanies ending a relationship, she creates a safe, reassuring place where no one ever feels alone in their feelings. With an inspired, relatable style, Kramer provides an introspective glimpse into the changing seasons of the heart, as she celebrates the powerful emotion of love.

Book Description :

'The Editorial Committee of the dictionary of Australian English, led by Arthur Delbridge, were adamant that their dictionary was to be descriptive. It was an important point of difference from traditional dictionary policy. This dictionary would give an account of Australian English as it was heard and written. We wanted it all: spoken, written, technical, polite, rude. The speech of labourers, the jargon of merchants, swearwords, Australianisms, as well as the basic core of English vocabulary.' The idea for a dictionary of Australian English was conceived in the 1960s, but it wasn't until 1981 that the first edition of the Macquarie Dictionary was published. More Than Words tells the story of how the dictionary was brought to life during this period -- from identifying the need for a genuinely Australian dictionary to the long road towards publication -- and explores how the dictionary has evolved over the years since then.

Book Description :

Grounded in ethnographic and archival research on the Indonesian island of Bali, More Than Words challenges conventional understandings of textuality and writing as they pertain to the religious traditions of Southeast Asia. Through a nuanced study of Balinese script as employed in rites of healing, sorcery, and self-defense, Richard Fox explores the aims and desires embodied in the production and use of palm-leaf manuscripts, amulets, and other inscribed objects. Balinese often attribute both life and independent volition to manuscripts and copperplate inscriptions, presenting them with elaborate offerings. Commonly addressed with personal honorifics, these script-bearing objects may become partners with humans and other sentient beings in relations of exchange and mutual obligation. The question is how such practices of "the living letter" may be related to more recently emergent conceptions of writing—linked to academic philology, reform Hinduism, and local politics—which take Balinese letters to be a symbol of cultural heritage, and a neutral medium for the transmission of textual meaning. More than Words shows how Balinese practices of apotropaic writing—on palm-leaves, amulets, and bodies—challenge these notions, and yet coexist alongside them. Reflecting on this coexistence, Fox develops a theoretical approach to writing centered on the premise that such contradictory sensibilities hold wider significance than previously recognized for the history and practice of religion in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Book Description :

This captivating little book will please both child and adult as it combines rhymed verse with original, hand-drawn illustrations to evoke a gleeful primer on the world's premier marathon and its many careers. Inspired by the humanitarian and historical impact of the New York City Marathon, the Seussical verse and pen-and-ink drawings mark this as an unprecedented treatment of professional sport; parents may read it aloud to children, teenagers may reference it for career ideas, and anyone at all can take it as a tiny little tour through the sights and sounds of a famous event in New York City. Many readers will recognize favorite marathon moments and historical grace-notes, but they will also giggle at the cartoons and appreciate the highlighting of the unsung "un-running" careers, from engineer to musician, that fortify the city's greatest November party, an apolitical convention in the season of politics, and an exemplar of productive international relationships. The New York City Marathon, founded by Fred Lebow and today shaped by the technical brilliance of race director Alan Steinfeld, is orchestrated by the New York Road Runners, the largest running organization in the world.
