Implementation of all or more electric technologies has the potential of improving the performance of a given aircraft. Savings can manifest through improved engine performance, reduced equipment weight and improved secondary power and systems utilization. Despite the potential benefits and the amount of research invested the concept has not been implemented yet and its impact on the overall performance of the aircraft remains unclear. Adoption of a single form of secondary power and implementation of more or all electric technologies is claimed to offer a number of distinct advantages over the conventional secondary power systems. These claims include the following: 1. Improved engine performance through the optimization of off-takes and elimination of bleed air. These issues is said to become critical as the bypass ratio of the engine increases and the size of the core reduces. However, despite concerns over the capability of high bypass ratio to provide secondary power requirements of future aircraft the claims remain unproven and it is generally believed that off-take penalties are not dependent on the configuration of the engine and can be kept to a minimum if the engine is designed to provide them. 2. Improved system utilization and implementation of more efficient power units. Conventional secondary power systems developed during the years that fuel was relatively fuel was relatively inexpensive and have not been optimized for maximum efficiency. Bleeding air from the engine is largely inefficient and a large amount of power is wasted for no useful purpose. In addition, hydraulics are often sized for loads that are small in duration thus increasing the mass and power requirements of the system. Elimination of conventional hydraulic and bleed air systems could lead to a significant mass reduction. However, the mass and size of the electrical equipment would also increase and these changes must be accounted for. 4. Additional benefits include reduced single typ.

Aviation emissions contribute to climate change, and all-electric aircraft offer an opportunity for zero in-flight emissions. Over the past decade, more than 50 all-electric conceptual, experimental, and commercial aircraft have been researched, with a particular focus on light aircraft. These designs are reviewed, along with progress in battery technology. An all-electric aircraft design and optimization program, TASOPTe, has been developed from an existing version for conventionally-powered aircraft, TASOPT. Both programs are largely based on first-principles, enabling the design of aircraft with unusually short design ranges. A series of optimized 180-passenger aircraft based on the Airbus A320neo configuration are designed and evaluated at 200-1600 nmi design ranges with 2-10 propulsors and 400-2000 Wh/kg batteries. The performance of these all-electric aircraft is compared to advanced conventionally-powered aircraft optimized for the same design ranges. Optimized all-electric aircraft are found to use two or four propulsors, depending on the design range and specific energy assumed. The design range limits for each specific energy are determined, which are restricted by aircraft weight and performance penalties. A factor of four increase in battery pack specific energy from current values of 200 Wh/kg to 800 Wh/kg enables 500 nmi flights. However, a lower design range of 300 nmi provides improved energy and environmental performance. The required grid power generation circumstances for commercial all-electric aircraft to become net environmentally beneficial is determined for each specific energy assumption. The entire energy conversion chain, including charging, transport, and discharging of electrical energy, is considered. Despite the higher total energy use, narrow-body all-electric aircraft have the potential for lower equivalent CO2 emissions if the electrical grid transitions toward renewable energy. This is largely enabled by the complete elimination of all high-altitude emissions, which would remove associated non-CO2 warming.

The aviation industry has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the major rise in electric power system technology for the past several decades. With more electric aircraft (MEA) now defining the new industry standard, the new future vision is toward all-electric aircraft, wherein conventional power systems and propulsion sources are electrified. Achieving all-electric aircraft will require optimization of energy source usage onboard existing MEA. By first considering the problem under a simplified environment, such as a hybrid unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) power system, energy optimization techniques can be explored before being considered for larger applications. This work first presents a method for system modeling and optimizing the usage of energy sources for a hybrid UAV system. The energy optimization is presented through a dynamic programming algorithm, which considers the system under only the fundamental constraints. The system modeling aspect is presented as a virtual UAV model, which considers all of the nonlinear constraints present upon the system. The virtual UAV model validates the results from the algorithm to ensure the anticipated operation is feasible under realistic system constraints. This work then uses the results from the hybrid UAV study, and extends it to a study of larger commercial aircraft with the focus being on the transition to all-electric aircraft. Power system architectures, voltage levels, power requirements, and load characteristics are examined on existing electric vehicle applications, and predictions are made of what the future all-electric aircraft will look like. Additionally, the primary challenges of accomplishing “all-electric” status are discussed, including existing propulsion methods and battery chemistry. Finally, the paper discusses some recent advances toward all-electric aircraft, which further shows the bright future for the all-electric aircraft.
