Book Description :

Increasing the world's population to 9 billion by 2050 will lead to an increase in the need for raw materials that support basic human activities, as well as all developments in new technologies, mobility, energy. If current trends continue, projections indicate that to meet global needs by 2050, we will have to extract more metals from the subsoil than mankind has extracted since the inception. It is against this backdrop of strong demand for metals that energy and the transition to decarbonized energy production arise. The stakes associated with energy and mineral raw materials are indissociable because metals are necessary to build the infrastructures of production of energy, its storage and its distribution, but also because the energy is necessary to produce the raw materials. The offshoring of production weighs on the adaptive capacities of Western non-producing countries, which are currently confronted with the economic, political and technological emergence of producer countries such as China. Industries in developed non-producing countries are thus placed in a situation of great dependence on imports of fossil energy, but also mineral resources. In this highly competitive context, the stakes in raw materials and energy are considerable. Mineral Resources and Energy addresses these topics from the point-of-view of needs, notably to ensure the energy transition and primary production, recycling, technological innovation, economic and social issues. A chapter is devoted to modeling in order to understand and integrate these couplings in a global model. Increasing the world's population to 9 billion by 2050 will lead to an increase in the need for raw materials that support basic human activities. Book Description :

Is Gaia becoming Thanatia, a resource exhausted planet? For how long can our high-tech society be sustained in the light of declining mineral ore grades, heavy dependence on un-recycled critical metals and accelerated material dispersion? These are all root causes of future disruptions that need to be addressed today. This book presents a cradle-to-cradle view of the Earth's abiotic resources through a novel and rigorous approach based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics: heat dissipates and materials deteriorate and disperse. Quality is irreversibly lost. This allows for the assessment of such depletion and can be used to estimate the year where production of the main mineral commodities could reach its zenith. By postulating Thanatia, one acquires a sense of destiny and a concern for a unified global management of the planet's abiotic resource endowment. The book covers the core aspects of geology, geochemistry, mining, metallurgy, economics, the environment, thermodynamics and thermochemistry. It is supported by comprehensive databases related to mineral resources, including detailed compositions of the Earth's layers, thermochemical properties of over 300 substances, historical energy and mineral resource inventories, energy consumption and environmental impacts in the mining and metallurgical sector and world recycling rates of commodities. Keywords:Exergy;Mineral Resources;Depletion;Hubbert Peak;Gibbs Free Energy;Mineralogical Composition of the Earth;ThermodynamicsReviews: "This is an exhaustive treatment of the subject with numerous tables of the baseline date and discussions going from basic thermodynamics to economics and social sciences. It is an essential read for any scientist who is concerned with resource evaluation and how we can best manage these assets and continue to live on an Earth in which we appreciate the service provided by the resource and thus avoid Thanatia in defence of Gaia." John Ludden Executive Director, British Geological Survey “'Thanatia' presents a refreshing way of analysing the run-down of our mineral inheritance … To serious students of the resource problem the numerous tables in 'Thanatia' are useful because they are thought-provoking as much as for the numerical data. 'Thanatia' is a big book, with a wealth of data and background material on the minerals industry, representing many years of intensive investigation and analysis.” Jane H Hodgkinson & Frank D Stacey CSIRO, Australia Authors of The Earth as a Cradle for Life “The unusual title of the book Thanatia (death in Greek) leads its readers to understand what sustainability really means and to quantify the problem of mineral depletion using both disciplines thermodynamics and economics. ” Ph. Book Description :

The Development Potential of Precambrian Mineral Deposits covers several aspects of Precambrian mineral resource potential and assessment towards mineral exploration and mineral reserves. This book contains 27 chapters and begins with an overview of the world production and consumption of certain minerals. The next chapters describe the physical and chemical characteristics of certain mineral ores, as well as the mineral content of certain rock assemblages. These topics are followed by discussions of the geographical distribution of some ores, including discovered metal bearing zones in Africa. Considerable chapters are devoted to exploration techniques in tropical, temperate, and sub-arctic Precambrian areas. The remaining chapters examine the action of metamorphic and other geological processes in mobilizing ore minerals. The book will prove useful to geologists, researchers, and geology students.
