Book Description :

Every meditation tradition explains that there are two aspects to any effective meditation practice: insight and concentration. In Mindfulness in Plain English, author Bhante Henepola Gunaratana, a monk from Sri Lanka and venerated teacher of Buddhism, offered basic instruction on the meaning of insight (or vipassana) meditation through concepts that could be applied to any tradition. In Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English, he presents the levels of concentration with the same simplicity and humor that made the previous book so successful. The focus here is on the Jhanas, those meditative states of profound stillness and concentration in which the mind becomes fully immersed and absorbed in the chosen object of attention. Using the Jhanas to guide readers along the path to joy, happiness, equanimity, and one-pointedness, the author provides all of the instruction necessary to utilize meditation as a tool for building a more fulfilling life.

Contemplating the Four Foundations of Mindfulness--mindfulness of the body, of feelings, of the mind, and of phenomena themselves--is recommended for all practitioners. Newcomers will find The Four Foundations of Mindfulness in Plain English lays a strong groundwork for mindfulness practice and gives them all they need to get started right away, and old hands will find rich subtleties and insights to help consolidate and clarify what they may have begun to see for themselves. Book Description :

A focus on theater as conflict. The most extreme human conflict is war. War itself is spoken of as being conducted in "theaters" and is now fully dramatized on television, the ultimate reality program and spectator sport for armchair combatants. Selected from papers presented at the April 2005 Southeastern Theatre Conference's annual symposium, these essays probe the relationships between theater, war, and propaganda by examining theatrical responses to World War II, Vietnam, and the aftermath of 9/11. In the collection's first section, Bruce A. McConachie deconstructs standard notions concerning Bertolt Brecht's position on spectator empathy, while Alan Woods explores a post-WWII European tour of "Porgy and Bess" as an example of American Cold War diplomacy. Anne Fletcher, kb saine, and Claudia Wilsch Case investigate the different means by which the theatre is uniquely equipped to define and perpetuate the national mythologies indispensable to a nation at war. Other essays tackle, in turn, Vietnam-era protest drama, and theatrical responses to 9/11 and the war in Iraq. Kate Bredeson documents the explosive reaction in Avignon during the summer of 1968 when authorities banned a production of Gerard Gelas's "La Paillasse aux seins nus." Evan Bridestine, meanwhile, posits the notion of a dual wave of plays in the wake of 9/11: the first comprised of highly visceral responses, followed by a second wave of more cerebral dramas addressing the conflicts between individuals and their positions as members of a national or cultural group. Finally, Diana Calderazzo explores the critical reactions to Stephen Sondheim's "Assassins," both in the U.S. and abroad, as informed by events as varied asthe first Gulf War, 9/11, and the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. M. Scott Phillips is Associate Professor Theatre at Auburn University. He is co-author of the text book "Introducing Theatre" (with Joy H. Reilly) and has published scholarly work in "Theatre Studies," "Modern Drama," and "Theatre History Studies."

Book Description :

As the pace of life quickens and people feel depleted physically, emotionally, and spiritually, going on retreat to recuperate and regenerate has become a common practice. The quiet and seclusion of a monastery, abbey, or retreat center provide the time, space, and conditions for the mind and heart to come to stillness. This volume features 127 such places, which the Kellys have visited. About one third of these are new, and the other two thirds come from the Kellys' earlier regional guides, Sanctuaries: The Northeast and Sanctuaries: The West Coast and Southwest. In addition, there are over 1,000 listings of other places not visited. Many are Catholic or Episcopalian, but there are also Buddhist, Hindu, Sufi, and even Jewish havens, and a few that have no religious affiliation - in all, a choice of over 1,200 retreats, in every state of the union, where it is possible to find refuge, peace, and true refreshment.

Book Description :

This study explores three workshops of emotional transformation: Therevada Buddhist insight meditation, St. Ignatius Loyola's "Spiritual Exercises," and classical Freudian psychoanalysis. In each discipline practitioners alter emotions by the acts of attention to, and revised explanation of, emotional constellations drawn into concentrated periods of work. The framework of interpretation emerges from philosophical work on emotion, self-deception, and Freud; from psychoanalytic writings on transference; and from William James' understanding of selfhood, attention, and memory.
