Book Description :

The increased penetration of distributed generation (DG) in distribution networks has a direct impact on the network reliability, protection, and stability. Traditional protection strategies require extensive investigation as more DGs get introduced into the network. Inverter-based DGs are of particular concern in microgrid protection and automation since their controllers play a principal role in the DG behavior. Controllers of the inverter-based DGs regulate their output voltage, while some commercial inverter-based DG types use internal control loops to regulate the output current. Those commercial controllers may switch their control mode from current control mode to voltage control mode or vice versa. Switching from one mode to another will directly affect the fault characteristics of the generator and require major modifications on the protection scheme. Coordination between the controller's functions and the protection strategy is done adaptively as the control mode changes. On the other hand, Flexible Distribution of EneRgy and Storage devices (FDERS), which is a newly proposed framework aims to increase microgrid controllability and robustness, adjust the interconnection impedance between a distributed generator and a load by changing the controller reference voltage. This adjustment causes protection problems that may lead to maloperation of current-based protection relays. Coordination between the controller actions and protection devices is done this time by adding more constraints on current-based relays. Flexible Distribution of EneRgy and Storage resources (FDERS) was a recently proposed concept for islanded microgrids, and it offers several benefits including extended system controllability with improved system robustness, optimal energy resource deployment and increased lifetime. As the FDERS also involves a modification of DER controls, its implementation is found to have an impact on the distribution system protection schemes. In this work, I propose new protection strategies that are coordinated with controller's actions done in multi-function inverters or by implementing FDERS systems. The newly proposed protection strategies are recommended for dependable and secure system operation. In addition, a thorough investigation of CERTS/AEP microgrid protection scheme is presented in this work; recommendations given are based on improved coordination between different protection devices in the microgrid.

Book Description :

The use of distributed resources in the electric power system at the distribution level has opened new possibilities; among others, the overwhelming use of the DC microgrid in rural areas, electric vehicles, and ships. Most challenges associated with the DC microgrid in the protection system are related to ground fault. While low impedance ground fault can be detected through a high current surge, high impedance ground fault remains difficult due to a small current fault and a small reduction of the DC link voltage. The purpose of this project is to design a DC microgrid protection system capable of detecting and isolating ground faults impedance, both for a ring and radial bus configuration. To accomplish this goal, a new method has been developed for a DC ring bus while artificial neural network has been used for a DC radial bus configuration. Throughout the length of this document, their algorithms and performance will be discussed.

Book Description :

This work proposes a power management and control strategy for islanded microgrids, which consist of multiple electronically-interfaced distributed energy resource (DER) units, to achieve a prescribed load sharing scheme. This strategy provides 1) a power management system, 2) DER local controllers, and 3) a frequency control and synchronization scheme. This strategy is then generalized to incorporate both power-controlled and voltage-controlled DER units. To prevent DER unit trip-out or damage under short-circuit conditions, an overcurrent/overload protection scheme is also proposed. Under microgrid islanding and communication failure, there is a need to switch from an active to a latent microgrid controller. To minimize the resultant transients, control transition should be performed smoothly. Two smooth control transition techniques, based on 1) an observer and 2) an auxiliary tracking controller, are proposed to achieve a smooth control transition. Extensive case studies, based on time-domain simulations and real-time hardware-in-the-loop case studies are also conducted to demonstrate performance of the proposed method.

Book Description :

Numerous advances have occurred in the area of microgrids (MGs) in the last two decades. Protection is one of the most significant challenges facing the deployment of MGs. With the utilization of renewable energy resources (RES) to reduce emissions and costs, short circuit levels have drooped in comparison to those produced by conventional generating sources. Therefore, traditional protection schemes that apply to distribution system are no longer effective in protecting the microgrid against fault currents, either in grid–connected or islanded mode. In microgrid framework, distributed generation (DG) based RES require an interface of power electronic converters to regulate their output voltage, current, and frequency as well as to share the generated power properly. Mitigation the impacts of fault currents in microgrid system is an important aspect of restricting the output current of converters from exceeding their rated value, preventing power discontinuity, enhancing reliability of protection system and improving the stability of the network. For microgrid control and protection challenges, several approaches have been proposed in the last decade. However, the need for efficient and reliable protection schemes of islanded microgrid system still exists. This research thesis develops and synthesizes an adaptive integration of control and protection framework for MGs. The proposed strategy is based on detecting the faults and limiting the fault currents for short periods until the protection devices make a proper decision.A single state observer has been developed to detect the faults that occur within protection zones. Moreover, fault current limiter (FCL) devices have been utilized to achieve rapid switching with instant reduction of fault current contribution. The adaptive integrated protection proposed in this research is achievable using either centralized or decentralized control in MGs. The proposed framework has been applied to islanded microgrid configuration and is demonstrated to be an effective means to protect the system and maintain the voltage and frequency within acceptable range with the capability of power continuity during both transient and persistent faults.
