Methodological and Technological Advances in Death Investigations: Application and Case Studies focuses on advancements in both methods and technology in death investigations. Specifically, in the areas of latent fingerprints, facial recognition, wildlife forensics, using aerial vehicles and 3D-ID. The combination of national and international authors and a discussion of the state of forensic science over a decade after the National Academies 2009 Report, Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward, further highlights the boundaries, limitations and context in which these newer technologies and applications act synergistically to enhance forensic science. Synthesizes new and emerging technologies to put them in perspective for researchers and practitioners, such as facial recognition, using aerial vehicles and 3D-ID Includes case studies throughout that explain how certain advanced technologies impact investigations Fills a gap in literature with more cross-disciplinary topics that pertain to death investigations

Book Description :

Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

Book Description :

A stunning collection of cutting-edge essays which brings together the leading scholars in visual research. Clearly structured, and written in an engaging and accessible style throughout, this invigorating work will be the 'must have' text for teachers and students of `the visual' across the arts, humanities and social sciences. - Elaine Campbell, Reader in Criminology, Newcastle University This is a book about research that takes the challenge of the internet seriously, that rises above disciplinary difference and points to new directions for social research. - Rob Walker, Emeritus Professor, University of East Anglia This innovative book examines and introduces cutting edge visual methods in social research. It explores the development of visual methodology as a field of interdisciplinary and post-disciplinary practice spanning scholarly and applied concerns. Positioned at the innovative edge of theory and practice in contemporary visual research, Pink's engaging book goes beyond the methods, ideas and fields of practice outlined in existing texts and handbooks. This book examines: -How new theoretical and methodological engagements are developing and emerging in research practice; -the impact new approaches are having on the types of knowledge visual research produces and critiques; -the ways visual research intersects with new media; -and the implications for social and cultural research, scholarship and intervention. This book will be essential reading for any student or researcher thinking of using visual methods in their own research. Sarah Pink is Professor of Social Sciences at Loughborough University.

Book Description :

Here is presented for the first time a methodology for the investigation of norms which operate in the field of audiovisual translation. Based on the findings of the polysystem approach to translation, the present work aims to demonstrate that it is possible to investigate audiovisual translation and the norms that operate in it in a systematic way. Human agents, (audiovisual) products, recipients, and the mode itself are thoroughly investigated and stratified under a lower, middle and upper level. Specific techniques for collecting and analysing data are suggested. The model is tentatively applied to the investigation of norms which seem to determine the choice between subtitling and revoicing children's TV programmes in Greece. However, one will soon notice that the same model could be applied for the investigation of audiovisual translation norms in any other country. But not only that: one will quickly realise that, with minute modifications, the same model can prove effective for the study of norms in other modes of written translation too. Therefore, this volume can be of a high interest not only to audiovisual translation scholars and practitioners, but to general translation scholars and students of translation proper as well.

Understanding the Dream Sociogram

Understanding the Dream Sociogram Book
Author : Joseph Dillard

Book Description :

Understanding the Dream Sociogram, the complementary volume to Dream Sociometry, explains how to take sociometric data from dreams and life issues and create a Dream Sociogram, to reveal patterns of intrasocial dynamics that clarify conflicts and reveal pathways to transformation. By identifying collectives of emerging potentials, or perspectives and relationships that are attempting to manifest higher order integration, this book teaches readers to stand back from personal and societal dramas and discover creative contexts that show an effective way forward. Unique in its approach to analysing dreams, the book introduces a methodology that teaches multi-perspectivalism as a way of resolving pressing life issues. It argues that humans, as naturally psychologically geocentric, need to evolve into a multi-perspectival world view and understanding of self. Exploring how to use the sociogram to deepen this understanding, the book offers practical examples and detailed real-life applications. Its integral and transpersonal applications of Moreno’s sociometry are novel and substantive in their addition to this field of research. The transpersonal results can be effective in reducing anxiety-based disorders, nightmares and phobias, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. As such, this book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of psychodrama, sociometry, group psychotherapy, transpersonal, experiential and action therapies, as well as postgraduate students studying psychology and sociology.
