Modern scientific and technological fields are frequently of an interdisciplinary nature, and the field of fibrous composites is no exception. Unlike fibre-reinforced plastics, the family of metal- and ceramic-based composites is still quite a new group of materials with a large variety of mechanical and physical properties. Up until now it has been difficult to produce these materials as the necessary technical information has not been well documented. The main purpose of this book is to link together fabrication, structure and properties chains, so as to clarify which structure provides the necessary properties, and how one can attain the correct composite structure. To this end, the book not only contains topics of a purely technical nature, but also a description of the failure mechanics of metal- and ceramic-matrix composites, as this is the key to understanding the structure-properties segment of the chain mentioned. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a general view of composites with the accent on metal- and ceramic-matrix composites. It also contains a brief description of modern fibres and composites and can be considered, at least for beginners, as a starting point for further study. Part II looks at the composite microstructures considered to be either optimal or reasonable in resisting a particular loading. Finally Part II describes a variety of mechanical, physical, and chemical potential for organizing these microstructures. Experimental data on technologies, material structures, and material properties are used throughout the book to support theoretical conclusions or to obtain important physical parameters.

Techniques were developed for the sintering and hot pressing of alumina and alumina containing 5 wt. %, 10 wt. % and 20 wt. % molybdenum fibers. The physical and mechanical properties of alumina containing these percentages of 1/8 in. long by 0.002 in. dia. fibers were determined and compared to those of the alumina. The alumina was superior in strength and impact resistance but there was some indication that the aluminas containing 10 and 20 wt. % additions of fiber were superior in thermal shock resistance. All alumina samples containing 10 and 20% additions developed microcracks while only some 5% samples developed these cracks.

This book presents cutting-edge research on the design and development of novel, advanced high-strength, light-weight materials via the incorporation of novel reinforcements, namely, metallic amorphous alloys/bulk metallic glasses (BMG), in light metal matrix composites (LMMCs) based on Al and Mg. The book begins with an introduction to conventional ceramic reinforced light metal matrix composites, along with the major drawbacks which limit their application. Metallic amorphous alloys/Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMG) are new class of metallic materials that are distinctly differently from conventional metals/alloys in terms of their structure and thermal behavior, and exhibit extremely high strength (1 to 2 GPa) and large elastic strain limit (1 to 2%). Given these unique properties, upon their incorporation into Al/Mg-matrices, they provide superior interfacial properties, i.e. high degree of compatibility with the matrix due to their metallic nature when compared to conventional ceramic reinforcements, and thereby significantly enhance the mechanical performance of LMMCs. Amorphous/BMG reinforced LMMCs is an emerging research field and the existing literature is meager. This book discusses the various processing methods that would be suitable for these novel materials. A comparison of mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms of amorphous/BMG reinforced composites with those of conventional ceramic composites is presented. Future research directions and wider research potential of the novel materials are discussed, and prospective applications are highlighted. For ease of understanding and comparison, appropriate schematics, tables, and figures are provided.

It has been shown that fracture resistance in the metal-reinforced ceramics WC/Co, Al2O3/Al, and B4C/Al arises from both plasticity and crack bridging. The theoretical basis has been laid for interpreting high resolution measurements of displacement fields and crack opening profiles to deduce the proportion of toughening due to each of these mechanisms in detail. Preliminary analysis accounting for plasticity alone has been presented for data for WC/Co. Various theoretical results have been obtained concerning the inverse problem of deducing bulk plastic strain fields from surface displacement measurements and deducing bridging tractions from measured crack opening profiles.
