Book Description :

For many years the dominant focus in gender relations has been the differences between men and women. Authors such as Deborah Tannen ( DEGREESIYou Just Don't Understand DEGREESR) and John Gray ( DEGREESIMen are from Mars, Women are from Venus DEGREESR) have argued that there are deep-seated and enduring differences between male and female personalities, styles, even languages. Elizabeth Aries sees the issue as more complex and dependent on several variables, among them the person's status, role, goals, conversational partners, and the characteristics of the situational context. Aries discusses why we emphasize the differences between the sexes, the ways in which these are exaggerated, and how we may be perpetuating the very stereotypes we wish to abandon. For psychologists and researchers of gender and communication, this book will illuminate recent studies in gender relations. For general readers it will offer a stimulating counterpoint to prevailing views.

Book Description :

What did C. S. Lewis really think about gender roles? In this book, a widely recognized expert on male and female roles evaluates Lewis's understanding and presentation of gender, revealing that he ended his life thinking differently about gender than many of his followers assume. This is the first book to provide a close examination of Lewis's thought on gender and what it means for today. It addresses the tension between faith and science and offers insight into the continuing debate over gender relations, egalitarianism, and complementarianism. The book will appeal to readers of C. S. Lewis and those who are interested in gender issues.

Book Description :

Can a woman make it to the major leagues? In this much anticipated sequel to the beloved book, The Ninth Man, Ninth Man II: The First Woman continues with the saga of Casey Collins, a female baseball player who is striving to become the first woman to make it to the major leagues. As Casey attempts to make history, she unintentionally ignites this generations battle of the sexes. The stakes are raised as a legion of young girls and women rally to support Casey in her quest, and her fear of letting down her girls far outweighs any fear of a 95-mph fastball. While the core cast from The Ninth Man remains, many new characters are introduced. Some are favorable to Casey; others are not. Included are a legendary pitcher straight out of a Leroy Neiman portrait, a woman from Nigeria with piercing eyes and a wit to match, and Tomasino Hawk, the major leagues only Native American player. Follow Casey Collins and this diverse cast of characters as the issues of baseball and life collide. As it was with The Ninth Man, Ninth Man II: The First Woman is about more than baseball. Much more.

Book Description :

Donald R. McCreary and Joan C. Chrisler The Development of Gender Studies in Psychology Studies of sex differences are as old as the ?eld of psychology, and they have been conducted in every sub?eld of the discipline. There are probably many reasons for the popularity of these studies, but three reasons seem to be most prominent. First, social psychological studies of person perception show that sex is especially salient in social groups. It is the ?rst thing people notice about others, and it is one of the things we remember best (Fiske, Haslam, & Fiske, 1991; Stangor, Lynch, Duan, & Glass, 1992). For example, people may not remember who uttered a witty remark, but they are likely to remember whether the quip came from a woman or a man. Second, many people hold ?rm beliefs that aspects of physiology suit men and women for particular social roles. Men’s greater upper body strength makes them better candidates for manual labor, and their greater height gives the impression that they would make good leaders (i. e. , people we look up to). Women’s reproductive capacity and the caretaking tasks (e. g. , breastfeeding, baby minding) that accompany it make them seem suitable for other roles that require gentleness and nurturance. Third, the logic that underlies hypothesis testing in the sciences is focused on difference. Researchers design their studies with the hope that they can reject the null hypothesis that experimental groups do not differ.

Book Description :

No one after reading this thought-provoking book will blithely assert that we are living in an age of equality between the sexes. Taking the 1930s detective fiction of Dorothy L. Sayers as a springboard and drawing on her own practice as a psychotherapist Gail Freyne makes hard-hitting points about the still unequal relationship between the sexes in the home, the workplace and society at large. In a style as engaging and accessible as Sayers's own, Freyne demolishes the notion that the postfeminist era has rendered equal rights feminism redundant.
